Help for Dog with Bad Breath

We have a 3 year old pug whose breath has always been horrible. My husband is very anal about cleaning, brushing and scraping his teeth on a weekly basis so we know that isn't the problem. We have looked into buying him some dog treats/biscuits that help with bad breath, but there are so many out there and we don't want to waste our money if it doesn't work. Can anyone recommend a dog biscuit or treat that has helped their dog combat bad breath? Thanks!

My parent's dog also had this problem. The vet was appalled by his breath and put him on some type of medicine - not an antibiotic but something prescribed. The problem went away almost immediately and never came back. I will ask my stepmother for the name of the medication and post it here.

My mom has a chahuahua with bad breath, the vet told her they need to brush the dogs teath at least once a day. They also recommended the green chewies. My mom was able to buy a couple samples at petco to see if her dog would like them. A bag is expensive. There are also dental plans for small dogs but they can run a couple hundred a year.

Look for bisquits that contain charcoal. There is nothing else that works like they do.

Have you tried changing the dog's diet? If your husband brushes the dog's teeth then a breath-biscuit is not going to help. Instead, talk to your doctor about possible food allergies that could be triggering stomach problems and thus bad breath. Good luck.

IMy partner is a retired veterinarian...Take the dog to a good veterinarian and have an examination. Perhaps what your dog needs is a professional cleaning and a prescription diet for dogs with teeth problems.

I don't know about a biscuit, but a neighbor adds a special mint flavor to their dog's water to help combat bad breath and they say it has worked wonders. Don't know what it is, but I'm sure if you go to PetSmart, they could help you! Good luck!
