My 2 1/2 year old yesterday started getting a rash along the back of his neck, behind his ears and on the inside of his elbows. Today/tongiht it's expanded down his arms. It's pinkish/redish tiny bumps. I think it might be heat rash, but I'm not sure how to treat it. What do I do? Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks!

My daughter (3yrs) was born with very sensitive skin and my older daughter (5yrs) started getting the itchy skin when she was about 3yrs old. The doctor's said it was eczema. I also noticed when I put sunblock on them they get those little bumps all over their skin like an allergic reaction and they say they're itchy. My doctor said to use cetaphil body wash and eucerin cream (the greasy looking cream works better than the lotion). It does help! Regular shampoos and body soapswith perfumes in it just irritate the skin more. Hope that helps.

Is his cheeks really pink, or red? If they are he could have soemthing called the fifth disease. It's nothing big.. It's basically a rash, and sometimes it itches. It's one of those common childhood things, but I'd still take him to the doctor to make sure. Both of my daughters have had it. Good luck, and I hope it clears up fast for you guys.

I am a little bit more skeptical to say that it is heat rash. If it does not go away, please call your doctor. If it is heat rash, once the child cools down, it usually goes away. My son used to get it all of the time as an infant and once we gave him a cool bath and put him to bed, it would be gone in the morning.

Please call your doctor if it is not gone today.

I'm no doctor but it sounds like heat rash or maybe prickly heat. In any case I would try a cool, not cold but cool bath of just water and sprinkle some corn starch on him. Baby powder tends to have perfumes so avoid that. if the bumps get worse give the Dr a call!

Hi R.,

I would try some baking soda paste. If it doesn't go away, then I would call the doctor to see what else can be done.

It sounds like a heat rash I used to get them ever year at the begininng of summer for the first 4 years of living in AZ( moved from Germany). People with excema are more likely to get heat rashes, but it has nothing to do with laundry and what not, it's the heat. How you discribed the bumps are exactly what mine were and I used to get it on my entire body for the whole summer.I also have excema and there is a difference between that and the heat rash, which spreads like crazy and over your entire body in no time. Mine wouldn't go away with a cool bath or anything thing like that. Some people have it more severe than others. I used pink Calamine lotion (wal-mart) which really helped. They also have a clear Calamine lotion which is better so he's not all pink all the time. Lastly, I had to stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day per the doctor 10 am to 4 pm. I eventually grow out of it but it took 4 miserable summers from ages 7-11. Just to let you know I'm african american and the heat rash can happen to anybody. Also try cutting his nails to help with the scratching. He's very young and hopefully will grow out of it. Good luck!!

Try Eucerin Lotion. My daughter had the same thing and I put that on instead of baby lotion and she was better in a couple of days.

Hi there R.

It sounds like excema to me. I would recommend finding out if people have it in either yours or your partner's family.

I have found the way to eliminate it is to wash with soap products that are not soap based (tea tree also) and using sensitive products when washing clothes and sheets.

All the best

I put powder on a cotton pad or soft cloth (away from little one, as it's not good for their lungs if it gets in the air) and gently spread the powder in the folds and susceptible areas. The key is to keep the skin exposed to the air, if possible, and little one cool, comfortable and dry. And yes to the cornstarch. If this doesn't help, I'd check with the Dr.

Hi R.,

This may be a reaction to laundry detergent. Laundry detergents (even Dreft) contain harmful chemicals that can cause skin irritations, headaches and respiratory issues. I use "EcoSense" from Melaleuca; but you can also get Seventh Generation or Holy Cow from a health food market.

Good luck! :)
