Heartburn/Indigestion Relief During Pregnancy

I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant and having the worst heartburn/indigestion already. It seems like it began much sooner than with my first pregnancy. Currently I'm taking Prevacid once a day and Zantac twice a day. Even if I eat a small meal it still hurts. I sit up after meals to aid digestion and I take walks. Are there certain foods that might cause more indigestion such as dairy?

I'm out of ideas. I'm willing to try just about anything to get relief. Please help.

What can I do next?

I lived with a bottle of Mylanta next to my side, there was nothing better than the cooling soothing liquid going down. I still get heartburn at certain times during my menstrual cycle (damn you hormones!) and find that for me tomato-based meals are the worst. Although I had french onion soup and bread yesterday and got a decent case of heartburn.

Any thing acidic or greasy will likely bring on a bout of heartburn. I have learned that sitting up straight can actually make my symptoms worse, so instead I try to recline on the couch, bed or recliner where I'm stretched out straight, but my head and shoulders are propped up. Also, try sleeping on your left side. I would talk to your doctor about it, because there has to be something that works better than taking that much medicine in a day. Hope you start feeling better soon!

It didn't matter what I ate or didn't eat, I had HORRIBLE acid reflux when pg with my now 8yr old daughter.

I kept Mylanta [original] with me at ALL times. I had one large bottle next to the bed, one in my toolbox at work, and one in my car. That was the ONLY time I could get relief. And the Dr told me I could have the original Mylanta as often as I needed it. I drank that like a glass of water during the night, I swear!

Onions, garlic, peppers, spices, citrus, and red meat all caused my heartburn... I try to eat healthier foods. Granola, yogurt, more bland foods. Drink a lot of water and try to stay away from carbonated beverages and coffee. I've been managing mine with diet and have been fairly successful. I am 19 weeks along. :) Good luck!

I have had heartburn for more years that I want to think about. I had it for years before I was pregnant and worse while pregnant. Everyone is different, but I will give you some tips that helped me.
Avoid acidic foods - anything fried
fruit (oranges, apples, grapes, grapefruit, strawberries)
veggies (peppers including bell peppers, tomato anything raw or cooked, onions, garlic)
beverages - most fruit and veggie drinks, anything carbonated, wine
Meats (fatty meats)

I found that eating about 3 hours before bed, a short walk after dinner and sometimes a cup of yogurt or pudding would help. The yogurt or pudding would cling to the sides of my throat and help calm it down. I also slept in the recliner many nights. When I did sleep in my bed, I found that sleeping on my left side did make a difference.

Good luck.

Digestive enzymes will sort you out. Both my mom and I have acid reflux (my mom was on the purple pill for years before figuring out that digestive enzymes worked as well or better). I get Rainbow Light Advanced Enzyme System because it has a bunch of other digestive aids such as Tumeric, Ginger, Fennel and other helpful things besides the enzymes. You can buy it at Whole Foods or Natural Grocers. I don't go a day without it, cause if I do, I pay for it! I also take a chewable probiotic, which also seems to help with digestion. Good luck & best wishes...

With my last two pregnancies my doctor had me take Zantac150 for my heartburn. It did wonders and it was the only thing that helped me!
