Has Anyone Tried This Tip for Keeping Refrigerator Shelves Clean? Did It Work?

What a waste of plastic!! This is why they made solid shelves to begin with so that spills don't go through. How hard is it to wipe one shelf at a time with a Clorox wipe? It's pre-moistened for you!

Did you read the comments on the post? Doesn't seem like it's worth the time, it leaves behind sticky adhesive, and is not environmentally friendly. I would say "No" to this. Sorry.

Honestly, it only takes a minute to wipe the shelves. The hard part is moving everything off the shelf so that you can wipe it, and with the plastic wrap you will still have to move everything off the shelf. In fact, I'm pretty sure it would take longer to lay plastic wrap on the shelf than to wipe it.

I've never done this, but I have taken a couple of paper towels and lined my veggie and fruit crisper before putting food in there. That way, if a rogue peach or cucumber starts to melt in there, I can take out all the good food, grab up the four corners of the paper towels and just throw it away without having to touch it.

I rarely have to do this because we don't pack our fridge to the point something starts to decay, but should it happen, I'm ready for it! Most of the time it happens, it's because I bought something that was on the verge of going overripe and by the end of the week, it's soup.

Nah.....I just clean my refrigerator periodically.....

Plastic is a petroleum product. We need to stop using plastic so wantingly. We have enough plastic bottles in the landfills now.

Sorry don't mean to flame but I think it's a silly idea.

I use cling wrap on the restroom medicine cabinet shelves. I stole the idea from the dentists office. It works and beats scraping toothpaste off the metal shelf.

That sounds like more of a hassle than just cleaning it regularly.

sounds like way more work than just cleaning the damn things when they need it.
or when you run out of things to cover up the gunky spots.

nope wouldn't bother...I do clean the fridge reg. & make sure that the things going into the fridge are wiped off before going into the fridge.

I have not seen this particular post on Pintrest but I have seen another one that might be more practical. I believe the basis for it was placemats.

If I'm not mistaken the thought was that you could easily take out the placemat, wipe it down, and put it back in. Unfortunately I never bookmarked it so I can't attach it to show you.

no tricks. just clean fridge once a month. yes it does get dirty but i never let it stay like that. i do hate the chore though but someone has got to do it.

yes, my mother in law does it.
she is a clean freak. She has a small catering business and she uses a couple of refrigerators, and she likes everything super clean, she lines the shelves with plastic wrap and she cleans it, I think she does it every week.
I just clean it whenever I feel it needs it. You could say once a month, but I don't really have it on my schedule.

I wouldn't bother with that because I'm a clean freak with the fridge.

I did, however, cover window sills with white contact paper because when my dogs see the bobcats and other wildlife they go nuts so the contact paper prevents scratches on my window sills

It would be more work to remove everything, remove the wrap and then reinstall the wrap and put things back than it would be to just wipe the shelves.

The best thing I did for my fridge was that I took two 13x9 baking pans and put one on the top shelf and one on a middle shelf. Anything small goes in those pans. When I did this I had already re-organized the doors so that I labeled the different door shelves. One part of the door has sandwich and salad items (mayo, mustard, dressings), another has things for meat (steak sauce, BBQ sauce, marinades, Worcestershire sauce) and a door tray designed for soda cans is the perfect spot for jars of jam and jelly. So everything else is in the shelf pans - catsup, peanut butter, pickles, flax seeds, caramel sauce. There are no more stray jars or bottles getting knocked over and shoved to the back of the fridge. With the small things corralled, it's easier to put leftovers together and put them where we can see them. And instead of cleaning those shelves, I just pull the pans out nd wipe them if needed but because things don't get lost or spilled, they stay clean. Eventually I'll change the pans our for Fridge Binz (clear plastic fridge trays) but I decided to try my pans first to make sure I liked this before buying. I did this about 6 weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

I guess the labor might be worth it if the fridge was stocked with paint cans and melty candlesticks, haha. I've used press and seal wrap before, though, and while it works, it leaves behind a residue. Cleaning the crud from that off the shelves would probably be harder than wiping the food off of them.

I like that idea as well as the one using a baking sheet. I will definitely try ONE or the OTHER when I clean my fridge next.....but no idea when that will be. LOL
