Before I had kids I never had any problem with my periods they came at the same time every month, lasted 4 days and never had cramps. But since having kids I feel like some one is stabbing me. It makes me want to cry. It is also way heavier than it was before I had kids I usually have to wear a tampon and a pad and change it every 25 minutes.

I had the same problem. My period started back at about 7 months, my son is now 22 months. This past month was the first time I did not have such severe cramps. I thought something must be wrong and mentioned to my Dr and he did not seem concerned just offered a perscription for the pain. It was finally not as bad this month so I am hoping I am past it now. I felt like I was in labor, my Dr said you can take up to 3 motrin at a time when the cramps are severe because I turned down pain killers. Hope it gets better for you soon!

Hi S.,
I know exactly what you are going through! My periods came back when my daughter was 11 months, and they were horrible. Every single time I ended up with cramps so bad that I threw up. The worst was when I was on vacation at a friends wedding in Poland and the grooms father wanted to take me to the hospital because i was so sick. When I got home I did some research and found out that a lot of the cramping women experience before and during their period is due to a loss of calcium during menstruation. The is magnified when you are nursing and the baby is getting first dibs on nutrition. The reason why I had become so very sick in poland was because I was not drinking any milk, and my daughter was nursing more! For me, eating dairy and other calcium rich foods and taking prenatals was not enough to stop the pain, I had to supplement with calcium and magnesium vitamins. Since August I have been taking a calcium/magnesium supplement ( go to a health food store or even CVS) and it has done wonders. I wish someone had told me years ago that such a simple dietary solution could make my life so much better every month!
Best of luck, i hope it works for you like it works for me.

Hi S.,
No, I'm sorry but the exact opposite happened to me. I went from having crippling pain every month to absolutely nothing. Maybe some slight soreness. I think both reactions are completely normal because you never know what having a baby is going to do to your body! GL!

My youngest is 5 and my periods have been worse since she came along... Ive always had them ontime everytime lasting the sametime each time,... never anything 'off' - thats how I knew I was pregnant... never had problems, once she was born I started breastfeeding until she was 13 months... my cycles started up like normal, I could only wish I didnt have it for months on end, lol... I acutally started my period the other day and last night I was in so much pain I couldnt sleep or sit still, 3-4 Motrin help me - my husband thinks Im crazy but the pain feels like I am in labor again or someone stabbing me in the stomach its horrible. Its even started effecting my legs, the pain is unbearable... It does not happen every month but enough that I dread getting my period and talk about taking my uterus out totally.. lol

I was told to use Motrin thats it and for the most part it works cause then I can sleep, but taking 3-4 every 3 or so hours cant be good. I try to keep moving - yoga helps sometimes too...

I had an IUD put it in. My doctor said that she has one too and it helped her with the painful periods she had after childbirth.

I have very painful periods before my first baby. Not every month but once or twice a year I had a horrible month -- the pain was so bad I got light headed and nearly passed out a few times (it was worse than early labor contractions). Naproxin (Alleve) or Midol and heating pads helped some. Since my son was born the flow is much heavier but the cramps are less. I am pregnant now so who knows what I will get next time. I do find that any kind of muscle pain is worse for me when I am tired (and what mom isn't?). Anyway, it seems like it varies from person to person but you could always check with your Dr.

Before my son I was blessed with no cramping at all. I never understood why they made so many pain relievers for menstrual cramping... When my period came back, it seems that on day 2 it's the worst, I don't want to move, my cramping is terrible, if I could stay home from work I would, but it seems odd to me to request a day off due to a regular menstrual cycle, so I turn to Motrin to help me thru it. I remember mentioning it to my OB/GYN on my next regular appointment. After my exam the Dr. pronounced me fine. I'm glad you asked this, as it's nice to hear from women with the same issue!

In my case the cramping did start to lessen (I'm trying to figure out when exactly (I'm now 5 mos. preg W/ #2 and my son is ~2 1/2 yrs. old), so I'm guessing around the 2 year mark it finally started to lessen up. I wonder what will happen this next round! ~J.

More painful yes but what you described doesn't sound typical. Call your OB/GYN and tell them how painful it is and see if they can offer any help. You may want to have it checked further if it stays that way. A.
