Has Anyone Flown with an Infant Recently?

My sister will be flying here with her 3 month old baby. What are the restrictions as far as formula goes? I called the airlines and they said she could bring her forumla, but no water and would have to purchase water once past security. Then I looked at the TSA website and it said you could bring forumla greater than 3 ounces within reason. So, now I'm at a lost as to what she should do. I know she's concerned about being able to warm up the bottle also. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciate.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all who replied. I have passed on to my sister some of your ideas. I do know she uses Similac Isomil and I'm not sure if they have the individual servings. It sounds like it would be very convenient. Thank you again! I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter.

Could she bring a small can of powdered formula and some empty bottles and buy the water in there. Once it becomes room temperature, I'd think it'd be ok to use to make the bottle and no heating would be required. She could bring a baby bottle or two of just plain water premeasured to what she'd need for a couple bottles and if they said anything, pour it out and then you wouldn't have wasted the expensive formula. I haven't flown with an infant since this restrictions have been in place, but I did when my son was that age back in 2002. I had the premeasured water in the bottles and a container of formula. It was the easiest way since you couldn't refrigerate or heat up the premade bottles. I bought one of those smaller cans of powdered formula and mixed on the plane. It seemed the best to me since I've heard to have enough stuff for an entire day because you never know about delays or other hold ups. Better to have too much than not enough. I don't know if this is allowed, and it's quite pricy, but maybe the ready to eat stuff in the can?

We traveled last summer, we took baby food in jars, powdered formula and bought a warm water from Starbucks to mix it with. TSA didn't have any problems, we put it in a gallon zip lock baggie and showed it to them. I know you can take breast milk, I don't see why a bottle would be an issue. They can warm bottles on the plane. I would think she could have a 2 smaller bottles of one larger one. Hope this helps.

I've flown twice with my son since december. he was 6 weeks old, then 4 months old. we are flying this weekend as well. I took an ice pack/cooler with 2 already made bottles. he just drank them cold. he doesn't have a problem with that. the last time we flew, the bottles were definitely 6 ounces. the only thing the TSA agent wanted to see what that i actualy had a baby with me. i told them there was formula before i put it through the x-ray machine. this time, i dont feel like dealing with the ice pack/cooler, so i am going to put the right amt of formula in a few bottles, and buy a bottle of water at the airport to mix on the plane when he needs his bottle. so much easier and saves room! i also traveled with the 6 ounce jars of ready to serve formula and there was no issue with that either.

The flight attendants have the capability to warm bottles. They should have no problem doing so.

As far as bringing water through security, it totally depends on who is working. I think they are a little more lenient if you have a baby with you. But I would not push the limit. I had a sippee cup full of water in my daughter's diaper bag. I didn't even realize it until I got on the plane. I think one small premixed bottle would not be objectionable. But buying water after you get past the gate would certainly help.

I wonder if the plane has a microwave? If so maybe they could heat it for a few seconds. Just a thought. I have no idea! Sorry! :)C.

Not sure what kind of formula your baby is on, but Enfamil makes a box of pre measured packets of formula. Enough for a 6-ounce bottle in each package. We used these when traveling recently and had absolutely no problem, plus they were so much easier than having to measure out the formula. Good luck with the flight and make sure the baby is sucking on either a bottle or paci at take off and landing to help with the ears.

Hello L.,

do advice your sister to pack extra formula with her for an additional 12 hrs and to have an extra bottle of water w/ her when she boards the plane. with this crazy weather we're having...delays and cancellations do happen. I strongly believe that when you prepare for a flight delay you do get there on time =) but that's just me... it's best to be prepared =) have fun w/ your sister and baby! ~C.~
