My son was recently diagnosed with the Hand, Foot, and Mouth Virus. He doesn't have a severe case thank goodness, but he's suffering from the blisters in his mouth. Of course I'm giving him medication for the pain and I've even given him popcicles, lots of cool drinks, soft cool foods, and even oral gel. But I was wondering if there is anything else out there to help with his pain. I feel so bad for him everytime he whines, cries, or complains about his tongue! Pleae I'll take any advice I can get and I'm totally willing to try anything even if it sounds crazy! Thanks ladies! :)
We suffered through four days of pain from the blister's in his mouth, but we made it through it. He had lots of ice cream and plenty of ibruprofen! :) I also used a combination of Mylanta and Benadryl to coat the inside of his mouth. Hi Louise, my daughter had a very bad case of the same thing last year. We had to take her to the emergency room twice , and also to her ped. to no avail we were told to give her tylenol and moltrin for her pain. There was really nothing else we could do but to wait for it to go away. I am sorry to say but just like you I hated to see her in pain and miserable.
I know how you feel! It was the saddest thing to watch my little boy suffer with that. The doc told me of some mouth wash also but I am sure my son wouldn't really understand the swish and spit process. We gave him motrin for the inflammation and pain and benadryl for the rash and sleep aid. It seemed to get him through the rough part. I will say a prayer for your little guy! Hope he feels better soon!

Hi Louise, my son had that when he was around 2. It was just in his mouth too ... but his gums were so swollen that his teeth were partially covered ... ouch! Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is make him more comfortable. The pain med. helps ... and we gave him extremely soft food like yogurt.

You and the other moms have pretty much covered the options. I would use Motrin more than Tylenol because of Motrin's anti-inflammatory properties.
Our local pediatricians are recommending against Oragel and other local anesthetics that are advertised for gum pain. There have been some problems with airway obstruction in young children from the numbness.
Check it out on the internet.

I was going to tell you that we used Mylanta also, but I see someone already beat me to that :) It worked for my son, also...it seems to coat the blisters, so they don't hurt so bad. Good luck!
Our ped suggested he swish mylanta around in his mouth then spit. It seemed to help my son's
mouth clear up faster.

I found a web site that has some products that totally helped my husband with this same type of problem. I'll give you the link if you want to check it out. I have been so impressed that we now use the products in our household. We used the whole dental care for my DH and he was able to get rid of the pain and he says the mouth rinse was almost instant relief. I can't promise anything but I have also shared this with our daughter whose son has had a similiar problem and it was successful with him also. This may sound odd, but I contracted a severe case of this from my two-year-old daughter. It took months for me to overcome, and they had to give me anti-virals which were relatively new at the time, being developed for things like herpes and AIDS. I had sores all over my mouth and tongue. The doctor gave me a concocted mouthwash that had hydrogen peroxide and antibiotics and other things in it, but I do not know. BUT - a dentist might be able to give you something similar for your son. Whatever the concoction was, it felt like such a relief. I remember that an aunt of mine many many years ago also used hydrogen peroxide in her mouth and I remember thinking how bizarre that was. Then lo-and-behold, it was in that concoction from my doctor.
Little boys and girls can get a virus of the hand, foot and mouth,especially when washing hands is very important as to not get grems. But babies will play with their hands, and try to suck on toes, and then what ever is on them, go right into the mouth. The antibiotic your son is on may be causing a yeast infection on the tongue! Oral gel is good for short time, but if you don't have any yogurt, try ice cream. Have your baby to gargle with warm salt water or baby aspirin. And wash hands!!! Can clean toys with mild bleach water and let air dry while he is sleeping. Good luck.
