Hair Texture Help

My hair has always been thick and wavy. It seems like the texture is more dry and strange. I'm letting it grow long because I like it that way. I used to be able to "fluff and go" with whatever hair product, and not really need to comb through the tangles. I recently noticed that it's tangling a lot more than it has before. Like mini-matted pieces. I can detangle them, but I've never noticed them till recently.

Any idea what changed? Any suggestions to prevent this? I'm 45, so maybe it's an age thing...

If its been a while since you had a trim you may need go get the dead/split ends cut off. Your hair will b healthier and less tangled. I have thick wavy hair as well and if I don't trim every 3-4 months my hair tangles bad at the ends

Becca is right - you always have to trim hair even if you are letting it grow. Also, hair texture changes based on what you're eating, what hormones are going through your body, things like thyroid deficiencies, even changes in water hardness if you have moved. You might benefit from a good hair treatment at a salon. If money is an issue, at least use shampoo, conditioner and any other products from the same line/company. They are more likely to be balanced to work together.

I would say a good trim and new product. I have thick coarse hair and have found that Morrocan oil works well. As your hair texture improves, you will need to use less and less of it. Also recently I have tried the Wen hair products and actually like them. They make my hair very soft.

Ditto everyone on the Moroccan oil and on getting regular trims. I also really like the Mixed Girls line of hair products. I sometimes feel a little self-conscious buying them, since I'm not mixed in the classic sense (though I suppose my ancestors emigrated from the Middle East a loooooooong time ago). But, they work!

Hormones have changed my hair a bajillion times over the years. I went from stick straight to Howard Stern curls when puberty hit. The thickness, ability to grow long, loosen to waves etc. has changed with my hormones. The best thing anyone can do for their hair is sulfate free products, good conditioner, heat protectant, oil treatments (Almond, Neem & Moroccan oils are good). If your ends are tangled then they are probably dried out and splitting, best thing is to trim them and move forward preventing damage vs. correcting it.

If your hair has dried out I suggest a cleansing conditioner vs. standard shampoo/conditioner products, but MOST DEFINATELY sulfate free.

I'm 46 and just went through this too. My hair is naturally curly so I just wash it, put some mousse in it and go. My hair was down to the middle of my back. All of a sudden, it got like hay hair and all weird. I tried all kinds of things then finally cut it above my shoulders thinking this would "cut off the dead ends". Well, it didn't. So when I was in CA a couple weeks ago on vacation, I was wandering around CVS (drug store) and they had an "ethnic" section in the hair care isle. There was this tub of leave in conditioner made from shea butter. I bought it since it was on clearance and it really helps! It's easier to manage, makes my hair softer and I still use the mousse and it's back to normal. So I'm letting it dry out too. I hope you find something that works for you. Good luck.
