My little girl has fine, thin, almost shoulder length, curly hair (some straight strands, but mostly curly). When we brush it, it get frizzy - when we do nothing, it looks like bed head... Any recommendations on great/mild hair care products to help the curls and "how" to best apply (after hair is dry, or when her hair is completely wet)?

Thanks so much!!

I have similar hair and I have to use a pick or wide-toothed comb instead of a brush, or I frizz up.
I apply Frizz-Ease Straight Fixation, while wet, and then Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon when dry.
That keeps it really smooth and I don't worry about the shampoos and conditioners as much.

You need to use hairbrushes designed for curly hair, and hair products labeled as being for curly hair. I have fine hair (but a lot of it) and it's curly, and my middle daughter has a ton of coarser hair that's curly and wavy. The problem for both of us is that our hair dries out easily and needs major hydration, and the curls need special care and boosting so that they don't look like a cheap home perm.

I like L'Oreal EverCreme for dry to very hair, as it's amazing and smells great and has the bonus of being vegan. It's also one of the only shampoo and conditioner products that doesn't cause an eczema flare up for me. For my daughter, I use the EverCreme conditioning spray as well after a bath because it helps detangle her long hair. If I miss using it, you can tell and her hair looks fried.

I've been using the L'Oreal curl activating mousse on top of Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Nutrient Spray which has olive oil, avocado oil, and black currant seed oil and shea butter oil. It's very light weight and feels really silky. I use it only on the lower half of the hair that hangs down to the ends (not at the scalp).

I also have a TRESemme curl hydration lotion, which is wonderful. I love that one too and will use it interchangeably with the mousse. TRESemme is actually really good for curly hair products.

I have 2 curly headed daughters . . . the 3rd is still up for debate (she hasn't much hair yet). I best thing I've found is a leave in conditioner. I get it at Sally's, "Silk Elements". A little goes a long way. So, in the am, I would brush it out with a detaingler, wet if I need to and rub some conditioner on it. You can scrunch it at use it just like you would mouse or gell.

My girls have very different hair. One is super think and the other very long and not so thick. And it works great for both.

Only brush her hair when it is wet, with conditioner in it (conditioner is very important because curly hair needs a lot of moisture) while she is in the bath or shower. Squeeze excess water out of her hair after rinsing. Once she gets out, towel dry (don't rub hair or it will tangle, just put a towel over her head/hair and blot. Then, use Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner. a dime to quarter size should be enough. Spread through hair. Then, use a scrunching motion (gather hair in palm of hand and gently squeeze) all around her head.
Sounds like a lot, but it should literally take you 2-3 minutes tops.
I do this every day for my curly hair and it stays really soft and not frizzy.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

I use Clairol 3 in 1 mouse on my hair after i shower to keep the frizz down but for a 5 year old I dont know. Sauve does have a no tangle spray for kids try that first it being the safest I think you'd want to use. My daughter now 11 has a bottle of bed head hair spray that in the mornings she doesn't wash her hair she can spray a thin mist over her hair to keep stuff down.

Aussie products are great. They smell nice and are super light but effective. I would get the scrunch spray for curly hair. You can spray it on when hair is damp and scrunch and have beautiful curls all day long. Then you leave it alone and it will stay all day--no frizzies.

Paul Mitchel leave in conditioner works great. My hair is baby fine and permed, this stuff works wonders when I need it.

It may seem expensive but honestly you only need a little bit, like the size of a pea; so a bottle lasts a long time.

I have curly hair and my 3 yr old has the beginnings of curly hair.
Not sure if this is kid specific or not- but a few basics on curly hair:

1. brushing curly hair = frizz. You can use a large tooth comb while the hair is wet if you really need to- but with fine hair I'm thinking you probably never even need to. Use your fingers. I can't remember the last time I combed my hair...or my daughters. Just towel dry her hair by scrunching it (like they do at the hairdresser) not by rubbing it. You want to disturb it the least amount

2. Daily Shampoo = frizz. shampoo dries hair out. You do not have to shampoo every day. I shampoo every 2-3 days depending on my activity. I condition every day.

3. Spray bottle of water for morning. My daughter does bath at night so in morning I put a towel around her neck and spray her hair with water using a little spray bottle then scrunch it dry. By the time breakfast is done and she's ready to leave the house it's dry and she's ready to go :).

There's a good curly hair book I think it's called "curly girl: the handbook" it's short and sweet.

I do think leave in conditioner would be good for kids.

Have fun with it!

I have a 2.5 year old girl with crazy hair. It's curly in back, straight in front and she sleeps with it stuck into the corner of her bumpers so that its a matted mess of fuzz when she wakes up. I use Noodle & Boo conditioning hair polish and love it. It smells great, is made for kids and works wonders. It takes away the fuzzy frizzies an acts like a detangler. I've also noticed it doesn't weigh her hair down or make it greasy like some of the other stuff I've tried. After using it on her dry morning hair, it looks just like she's had a bath and her hair dried naturally.

I use mousse on mine while it's damp, and it keeps it from being frizzy. It's what I've done as long as I can remember.

I use Suave kids detangler which helps with brushing and in the mornings when it's frizzy. I also use a mousse that helps pretty well too. I usually only apply these things when hair is dry. My friend's daughter has even curlier hair than my daughter's and she uses a leave in conditioner that she applies after the bath and it's amazing! I keep forgetting which brand, but I'm sure most leave-ins would work pretty well.
