Ok Moms, I need some major help. Last year around July my daughter weaned herself and the following month I went on birth control...the same I used for years. Around December, I started noticing my hair thinning. I told my husband, but of course he thought I was just imagining things. Now almost a year later, the problem is getting worse. I saw my Ob-Gyn this past July and she had some blood work done fearing I had a Thyroid disorder, but that was not so. The only thing that came from that is that I found out that my cholesterol and triglycerides were high. So, my question is what do I do??? I have always felt that part of a woman's natural beauty and also their confidence stems from a beautiful head of hair!!! I have always had compliments on my skin and hair. I am getting very scared. What do I do??? What type of doctor should I see??? Will my hair come back??? Please help.

What can I do next?

Go and see an Endocrinologist....superb doctors! I, too, thought I had a thyroid problem (many people in my family have this problem). I was having very similar symptoms like them, but found out it was insulin resistance and a vitamin d deficiency. Now I am back on track and feeling great (my hair is also completely back to normal). Another thing, even though your levels may have showed "normal" doesn't mean that they are. Make sure your doctor checks your Free T3 and T4 counts as well as your TSH and make sure you ask the exact level yours were at and their normal range for their test. Even if they are a smidgen off you can still have major issues. Some doctors will blow you off if they are barely over the normal level...don't let them. Also, there are natural things you can take for thyroid I know one is Iodine (google it if you would like to know for sure). Goodluck! :)

You might consider changing the pill that you are on. After a pregnancy, you may not respond the same way to the same pill as you did prior. If the thinning is all around and pretty equal, chances are it is due to the hormones, from the pregnancy (even over a year ago), weaning, and then the pills.
It usually takes 3-6 months AFTER one of these changes to start seeing hairloss. The good news is, it WILL grow back (though sometimes with a different texture). You can have your doc recheck the thyroid levels (TSH, T4, Free T4, T3), as well as an ANA level, but chances are it's hormones.
Yasmin made me almost bald years ago, and no-one believed me until I stopped it and a year later, got my hair back!
Hang in there! In the meantime, be sure to take a good multivitamin.

I was about 30 when my second daughter was born, and amazingly enough, I actually lost so much hair that "widows peak" area was thick and the temples were soooo thin, I was really freaked about it because no one told me the hormones would cause that to happen. I always had super thick hair. You know it took almost 3 years for it to all grow back in to where it wasn't bald looking on the temples. *sigh* I really don't know what to tell you to do because I just suffered through it. You might try cutting it in a style that will give you more body, even though it's thinned out. Since you have had you thyroid and levels all checked it just may take time.
15 years later my hair is thick as ever, but now it's going grey.....LOL it's always something!
Have you had any surgery lately? Anesthesia will cause your hair to thin too, which caused part of my problem since I'd had gall bladder surgery 4 months after the birth of my daughter.

I literally had handfuls of hair coming out after 2-3 months after the birth of my daughter I was losing my mind and feel your pain.I also had to do a hormaonal treatment to get things back in order and my Ob I told him and showed him on the hospital pillow what the heck is wroong with me I need some tests done,he tild me alll was fine it happens and stress is a main factor as well as birth and other things.I was really going to seek help if it continued I would see a dermatologist they will take hair samples and study them it could be as simple as a vitamin defeiency and will need to be put on a supplement but if it isn't they have medication to help will hair loss.I hope it helps but if your blood work came back high focus on a diet change.Hope you can fiqure out what is wrong and get it corrected and by the way does your method of birth control cause hairloss?

Hi B.,

I think you should check your thyroid again. I discovered after my first pregnancy that I had problems with my thyroid. In that case..if it is yes...you'll have to find a good Family Doctor or General physician, also you can be referred to an endocrinologist. I have handled my problem (hypothyroidism) just visiting a general doctor, and I take a medicine on a daily basis. It is nothing to be extremely concern about, but you have to take care of it. There are several annoying symptoms having problems with the thyroid (dry or thin hair, being moody, depending on if it is hypo or hyper thyroid, you'll have sensitivity to cold or heat, dry skin, being too thin or being gaining weight, fatigue, affects cholesterol level etc) You don't have to be scared at all, so many people have this problem and it is because your thyroid is producing too much or too little of the hormone (your doctor will tell you what problem exactly you have) Things get better (hair or skin....) when thyroid' problems are treated.
Pills, stress, shampooing or rinsing your hair with hot water and under the direct stream of a shower it may causes your hair get thinner. Lack of certain vitamins also contributes to the problem. I say all this because it happened the same to me, people told me all about these possibilities, and at the end it was thyroid.
Don' get scared, just take care of yourself and find a doctor and start from there. Good Luck
Alejandra

I don't have advice but want to tell you that you are definitely not alone. I was pregnant 3 years ago with my son, then the hair loss started... and has continued since I got pregnant with another and now I am pregnant again with another..... The spots that thinned with my son STILL haven't fully grown the full length I keep my hair and now it has thinned more in other spots, so my hair is all different lengths and thinner than ever. I actually don't mind the thinning since I had EXTREMELY thick hair. It's the different lengths that bother me with mine. I keep mine layered but the layers are never even since my hair is growing and thinning so crazy!
