Does anyone know of any safe, reliable methods for taking care and KEEPING hair that seems to be falling out in clumps and changing texture after bariatric surgery? A friend has been told that it could be a vitamin deficiency but has also been told that supplements can be dangerous since she's been taking a standard children's chewable multivitamin every day. Does that sound reasonable? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!~

Melissa-
Any too fast change in your body can cause hair loss- kind of like following pregnancy for some.
Her doc should recommend supplementation.
She's drastically- hopefully - changing her eating habits.
Any good Doc at least recommends vitamins these days.
I have clients from bariatric/lap band and their docs actually recommend our products - pharm. grade protein shakes-all the nutrition in one shake you get in 3000 cal. of todays food- what most eat anyway. Tell her she should at least take an adult one a day and cut it in half and take it more than once a day. Focus on good protein and good carbs- limit the bad carbs like bread and white rice to one serving a day- colorful eating. If she wants more info- have her email me directly at ____@____.com.

I had weight loss surgery 18 months ago. I went through the same thing and nothing seemed to work. I stopped washing my hair everyday and went to everyother day. I stopped pulling it back and I stopped styling it so much. The hair loss will stop eventually. If I remember right, it was about 9-12 months after surgery. My hair did start to grow back, but it's still not as full as it used to be. However, I don't know about your friend, but I would do the surgery and go through the hair loss all over again.

Hair loss is totally normal after this type of surgery. Take a protien supplement. It comes in powder form and you can put it on everything. I had a friend do this and her hair loss was minimal. It is a vitamin thing too. Talk to you doctor or nurses about it. They should have told you about this during the consult. You have to make sure you are getting enough nutrients to nourish your growing cells, ie, hair, skin etc. If not, they will suffer.
Good luck!
Nioxin products are good for this sort of thing too...

Hi Melissa,
I think any surgery, after having anesthesia, will cause your hair to fall out, I have had 4 sections and 1 foot and leg surgery for dead nerves. Every time I lost a ton of hair every day for 9 mo to 1 1/2 yrs. I couldn't believe all the hair on the shower drain every time I was done, not to mention all the stranded hairs left all over the house and in our food, yuck! I did what you are doing, washed it every other day. Two years since my last c-sect, I now have a whole head of thick hair again. So it will come back :)
