Morrocon Oil. It's a salon product, but works GREAT! If you need to know where to find it, let me know.
I have mixed children and their hair is very dry and I need some advice to help moisturize their hair, I have tried black and white products and nothing works.
Morrocon Oil. It's a salon product, but works GREAT! If you need to know where to find it, let me know.
Hi T., I don't have mixed children, but I hear Carol's Daughter's products are great. Some celebs have used it for their own children including Brad Pitt for their little girl he adopted. Good Luck!
Don't forget vitamins and Jell-O (Ingesting, not applying). Gelatin is very good for hair and nails, and while I was on Prenatals, all my co-workers commented on how lusterous my hair looked. Certainly try some of the creams and lotions, but don't forget a nutrition boost may also help.
First, as a biracial adult I am SOOOOO glad you asked this question! My mother had me looking crazy until I was old enough to do my own hair and I see many biracial children w/ crazy hair b/c their mother doesn't know what to do w/ hair different from her own.
I have hair that is very curly but not kinky. It has some very dry patches, but I've learned from trial and error what to use. If the product is too heavy, my hair feels greasy. I have a daughter whose father is black and we have similar hair but her hair requires slightly heavier product than mine.
I've had good luck w/ several products. I use Nexxus Therapie and Humectress to wash and condition our hair. Conditioning is key. I've been conditioning her hair since she was about 1 1/2. Next I use a product called Miss Jesse's Baby Buttercreme. This is EXPENSIVE, but I keep going back for more b/c it really works well. The large tub will last for months. http://missjessies.com/products.htm
I've also used Fantasia IC Pure Tea Oil Moisturizer. This is a light oil moisturizer and is about $5/ bottle. You get it at those hair supply stores -usually Asian operated. This product doesn't work so well on my daughter's hair - hers is a bit more dry than my own and not quite as silky.

Occassionally I'll use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion but it tends to leave my hair a tad too greasy. Its perfect for my daughter though. Its also about $5 and at the hair supply store or Target, etc.

It will be trial and error for a while, just keep trying products. Good luck, and remember to condition her hair every time you wash. Use a good conditioner. Use whatever oil moisturizer that you choose after you wash and while the hair is still wet.
One more thing, only wash her hair once or twice a week. Too much washing is bad for her hair b/c it strips the oils. Obviously if she swims or sweats a lot and has stinky hair you'll wash it more often. And, I wet my hair and my daughter's hair every day w/ a spray bottle of water before I comb it. Use a little more moisturizing oil if the hair feels dry. For us this is usually on day 3 after a wash. Once its done, she can't really comb it or fuss w/ it much anymore. Wet, moisturized hair will dry into beautiful curls, but if you mess w/ them too much, they become frizzy.
And, finally, I don't know how old your children are, but I don't allow my 3yo daughter to wear her hair down. I keep it braided or twisted everyday w/ an occasional ponytail that is allowed to be loose and free. All the playing etc that they do ends up creating a birds nest on their heads. Not fun for you or them to comb that out.
Sorry for the book!
Hi T.,
Have you had your water tested? There could be chemical (cholorine and such) in the water to make it drinkable that's drying out there hair. I don't know how often they wash their hair, but try letting them go at least one day without washing it. That will help keep the oils on the hair.

Try Vitapointe. My daughter's hair was so dry it flaked. Nothing seemed to work. I asked my stylist and he told me vitapointe. I love it and nothing else works on her hair. You have to get it from a beauty supply store not a Giant or anything like that. Good luck!
Try Carol's Daughter's products. You can buy them from Sephora or Carolsdaughter.com. Also try Baby buttercreme and the shampoos by Miss Jessies. The website is Missjessies.com. I am sure you will have some success with either on of those products. I hope this was helpful.
T.,
Try shea butter, the kind mixed with natural oils. Go to this website for more information on hair care for mixed-race children. http://mixedchicks.net
My older sister is mixed and she used raw eggs. About once a week she'd rub raw eggs into her hair and cover it with saran wrap, then she'd let it sit for about a half hour (I think), then she'd rinse it out. She swore up and down that it was the best conditioner she ever came across.
As much as you may want to, don't wash their hair everyday. Try Vitapoint. It may feel a little greasy at first but it will help moisturize their hair.
Carol's Daughter -- they have some sales in Macy's stores. They also have it at Sephora. Alternatively, you can go online. My baby is not mixed, but my friend who is, uses it too. We use the hair butter. It has been great. You may want to talk to someone in the store as to what they recommend as they also sell something called hair milk. Tui oil is good too. It's not cheap though. :-(
Try Kids Organics Protein & Vitamin Fortified Healthy Hair & Scalp Remedy. It's a white cream that can be used daily and helps to moisturize and saften the hair. Also use a leave-in conditioner when you wash the hair. Only wash the hair ever couple of weeks and then get a wig brush for getting to the scalp and getting out the knots. My daughters hair is biracial and it doesn't seem to get any easier but these are the things I have tried that work.
I'm not sure how old your children are but I also try and blow my 7 year olds hair dry with a hand held with an attachment. It seems to help too. Hope this helps.

There is a product called biosilk that is actually like liquid silk. You can apply a quarter size blob of it on your hand, and spread on your hands and THEN spread on WET hair.
it smells great, leaves hair from getting frizzy.
they sell it in salons and now CVS and Target.
i highly recommend it for shine, tangles, frizz, moisture etc.
Hi T.,
Try BioSilk silk therapy by Farouk, it is expensive about $25.00 for 12oz but it works wonders. You only need about a quarter size amount. Use it after you wash their hair. It works beautifully, I swear by it. You can find it at Trade Secrets, Ulta, and I even seen it at Walgreens.
Hi T.,
Try the hair products from either www.carolsdaughter.com or www.missjessies.com. The hair products are every good and combat dry, frizzy hair.
Beware that mixed children may not need their hair washed everyday; this will depend on the texture of their hair.
I do wet my hair everyday in order to comb the curls through along with conditioner.
There is a product called Mixed Chicks, I think they have shampoo, conditioner and leave in products - I have not tried this brand, however the Panteene curly hair line works quite well.
If the kids are old enough try deep conditioning for 20 minutes once a week by using a heavy conditioner under a heating cap.
Also try a small amount of olive oil or baby oil on wet hair (do not blow dry you kids hair this is very drying)
Try this as a conditioner http://www.amazon.com/Mixed-Chicks-Deep-Conditioner/dp/B0...
And this as a leave-in-conditioner http://www.amazon.com/Mixed-Chicks-Deep-Conditioner/dp/B0...
And you can try this (which would be the best but you would have to get it at either a beauty supply store on the list of the stores in your state or through a hair salon that sells it) http://moroccangoldoil.com/Where_to_buy.html#Virginia
That one (the miracle oil) you use after shampooing and conditioning, but while still in the shower and then you towel dry.
Hi T.,
I'm glad that you posted this question. I have already gotten some ideas from the other ladies to help me with my child. I'm African American and my husband is White Belgian. My daughter's hair is a combination of courser dry hair in spots and fine curls in other spots. I have been trying to get the same answer from others. One product that was suggested to me by my sister-in law who is bi-racial that has helped is 'No more tangles' from Johnson and Johnson. You can use it on wet or dry hair. I use it daily on my daughter's hair. It helps me to comb through it and style it for the day. It's not greasy at all. It is a wet spray but dries quickly. Also, I only wash my daughter's hair about once a week with a shampoo-conditioner product. 'No Tangles' is serving its purpose for now, but I will definitely be looking into some of the other suggestions.
T. try a hair lotion. I used to use Luster's pink lotion but that had a build up. I found that the lotions worked for me. Also botanicals hair moisturizing in a tube. Hope it works.
I recommend for the scalp PCJ (Pretty n Silky) that should be be applied 2-3 times per week, and Just for me 2-in-1 Detangler spray for daily maintenance. It can be found at Walmart. Hope this helps! :)
Hi T.,
You should try Ouidad products - they have a line called Kurly Kids. Check it out at www.ouidad.com
Good Luck!
Hi T., my sister's children are mixed and I wish I could remember the name of the goop she always put on Georgia's hair before she fixed it. They loved it! And it smelled good too. I will find out for you. They are in TX right now evacuating from IKE.
As for my friend Dana, she has 10 or so (I can't remember the count right now.) adopted kids. Many are mixed, some are all black. She uses all Melaleuca products. They are non-toxic and they work. My neighbor loves the Melaleuca hair products for both him and his son. (They are black too.)
From doing hair a long time ago, I know there is a difference with nutrition (supplement with vitamins) and that products take time to work. You may not see the big difference immediately. With Melaleuca, if you do not like their products, you get your money back. Another great benefit of their's.
Be sure to keep all products(other than Melaleuca since I know it is Non-Toxic) out of the reach of little ones. They can contain formaldyhide (sp?) and have been known to be fatal if ingested.
If you do decide to try Melaleuca, please keep me in the loop. The company 'thanks us' for our referals. And this is one way that I've been able to afford to be a SAHM and homeschool the boys. Maybe I can share all that shopping Melaleuca offers with you some time over the phone?
Let me know!
Take Care,

I had a student several years ago who is mixed and had a severe dry hair problem. The mom took the daughter to the doctor and found out she was washing their hair too much. He told her since the girls were mixed they can not have their hair washed everyday only 2 maybe 3 times a week. He gave her a special lotion to use but it took a little over a month to fix the problem. Maybe you could try your doctor and see what he/she recommends. Good Luck!
I am mixed, a female, and my mom also had difficulties with hair products for my hair. She tried Palmers Coconut Oil, its just like grease but very light and she used this on my hair from a very young age up until my older years. It was thick enough to oil my hair but light enough that it didnt make my hair greasy.
Hi T.,
Check out this website. http://www.janecartersolution.com/home.html
I found these products @ Trader Joe's and was impressed with how much more manageble my and my daughter's hair became. And my daughter's hair is as thick as they come.
thats doesnt really tell me what type of hair they have. mine are mixed too but have hair the same texture as a white person but their hair is very frizzy and curly. i make sure they use conditioner and brush it when it is wet. then after it's brushed i put a cream the same texture as conitioner in it. i've used sauve frizz control and am now using garnier fructice frizz control. these i think also say they are for dry hair too. or get a leave in conditioiner. i tried that its just for me for mixed kids on my oldest when she was 6 or 7 and it didnt do anything. i think its for kinky hair.
Not sure of their ages but I'd ask a black hairstylist. They may need a weekly conditioner to sit on their hair for a while. Tried PCJ products? It's for black kids. I'm black and use their hairdress on my 18 mo old -- however, vaseline really lays her hair down for me. I sit under the dryer 30 min a week w a conditioner. Good luck!
try a leave in conditioner...... wash it every morning!
T.:
Try an moisturizing leave-in conditioner as well as a moisturizing shampoo and wash-out conditioner(put on a shower cap and sit under the dryer for 15 min). I have really dry hair and palmers makes a olive oil hairdress that works great!
Also either switch their pillow case to a satin one or wrap their hair in satin wraps. All other fabrics dry hair out.
Hope this helps
My children are mixed also. My daughter has long curly hair. It is a nice smooth texture but does get a little dry and very tangly at the end of the day or in the morning. It had been past her waist but I just cut about 6 inches. It is still long but it was starting to be such an ordeal to comb it out since she likes to wear it down. I too have tried many products. I tried Pink Light when she was little, but that made it too greasy. Right now I am using Infusium 23 leave in conditioner. I really haven't found the "perfect" product, but I found that shampooing only once a week and using a really good conditioner, and lots of it, the other times really really helps. When I want to comb it out I use a spray bottle of water to wet it and then squirt some leave in conditioner on. If I dont wet it enough before combing it it is too frizzy. My sons hair is so different, only slightly wavy and almost blond, I dont use anything in it but I still only shampoo once a week for him or it gets dry feeling. Sorry I couldn't be more help!
It depends on their hair texture. My dd had very dry looking hair until I put some paul mitchell skinny serum, and the originial little sprouyt mousse in it then she has bouncy boing curls. I always use a detangler to brush it and I use one of those brushes with the knobby ends on the bristles not one like a normal bristle brush. Really the key is to keep it conditioned and to not use grease in it b/c it weighs it down. I use the original little sprotu shampoo and leave in conditioner on her hair and I only wash it once or twice a week unless using her hair for a napkin seems like a good idea to her that day. ;)
It depends on what texture the hair is. If its more on the kinky side you may want to grease their scalp2 or 3 times a week. Or you just may want to use a creme conditioner daily. My aunt used to use baby lotion and water. If it's more on the straight side, then lighter products, but not everyday and wash the hair a little more often. Kinky hair is almost always dry but as long as the scalp is clean and not flaky you should be ok. You may just want to goto a hair dresser to help you figure things out.
Hope that helps!
A.
I JUST had a chat with my girlfriend about her grandkids who are also mixed and she recommended Deva Curls for their hair. You can look it up on-line. Hope it helps!

T.,
I myself am of mixed race and all 3 of my girls have thick wavy hair. Check out this link carolsdaughter.com. They have something called Hair Milk. It's lightly scented, doesnt have a greasy feel yet keeps my hair soft and manageable. It comes in a 4 oz bottle $12 and 8 oz bottle $18. A little pricey but well worth it....trust me. They have excellent shampoos and conditioners as well. Other than ordering online, Carols Daughter recently opened a store in the Westfield Shopping Center in Wheaton, MD and Macy's at Bowie Towne Center. Good Luck!
