I would definitely not color it myself go back to hairdresser for any & all color!! Hair dye/color is super tricky!
Our daughter got her hair dyed partially purple yesterday. Of course it will wash out gradually and I'm wondering if we will be able to just put some Manic Panic on it if it starts to look sad, since the hair dresser already did the hard part of bleaching it? I have never dyed my hair so I'm a complete newb :P Your advice is appreciated :)
ETA: I’m not opposed to the color, I just want to keep it looking nice.

I would not do anything myself. If it gets to a point where she wants change, I'd go back to the hairdresser. You want to do as much as possible to keep her hair as healthy as possible.
Something like manic panic or punky color will work just fine to brighten the color once it starts to fade and is perfectly safe for her hair.
Why not just leave it alone?
She wanted it purple so now she can live with it.
It's hair.
No matter what she does to it it'll grow out eventually.
Well, maybe you let her find out what it looks like for a long time and that it has to grow out looking badly. Maybe if she has to live with her hair that way, she doesn't dye it purple anymore.
I know you say that you're not opposed to the color, but it's an expense thing to do and keep up, all for purple hair...
You mean if the purple fades? If it's bleached out, and the color fades, sometimes you can just reapply the color .. but honestly, I wouldn't trust doing it myself. They might not have to lighten/bleach as much (shouldn't, and that's how hair breaks) but color deposits unevenly - at roots compared to ends and depending on how it washes out. I'd leave it to the experts or at least get them to advise you (or someone who has had experience applying it).
*Years ago, when I would color mine, I would do a strand test, where I'd take a piece from underneath near the nape of my neck, and color it according to the directions. Depending on how that turned out, I'd color the rest. However, the nape of neck hair was generally not as damaged/porous as the top hair or ends because it wasn't as exposed as much - so tended to be healthier and more resistant to color. Not sure if that helps but that's my extent of knowledge!
Purple is such a hard color to keep looking nice - I did it once and never again because of the fade factor and it did look pretty yuck, pretty quickly. I guess all you can do is ask the hairdresser for some advice as to what they suggest to keep it looking "nice." I, too, would be much more concerned about the yucky faded look, than the actual color :) Purples and some reds are so hard to keep up with!
I would ask the colorist for advice, after all she's the pro!
