that's a HUGE change!!! I would NOT do it myself. I would go to a salon to have it done.
If she really wants to go blonde - I would do it one shade at a time - but if she's determined to do it overnight? Go to a professional!!!
Hello all,
My sister is has brown hair and she wants to dye it blonde. She bought a box of blonde hair color and a brown one too in case it didn't work.
Will the blonde color make her hair orange?
I have no clue about this so help me out ladies!

I'm a hairstylist. Yes, it will most likely make her orange, or a brassy yellow... it depends on how dark she is naturally, if she has color on her hair already, how blonde she is wanting to go, and if she is doing it allover or if it's a highlighting kit.
If her hair is a light brown or darker blonde, and she is going on 3 shades or less lighter and it isn't a highlighting kit, than she will likely have pretty decent results if she can get really good even coverage.
As for the brown box to cover it up just in case... sometimes it works, but sometimes it will just make her hair turn a muddy green color.
I can tell you, as a stylist... we fix a LOT of at home hair colors like this, b/c it's so easy to screw up and many girls end up looking like calico cats.
If she can't get it done at a salon, and if she has questions/problems, than she can go to Sally's to have someone there help her get the right stuff for her color/situation. It's really hard to tell over the internet since I don't know exactly what she is trying to achieve. Before I was a stylist, I had good luck with the Clariol base clear color from Sallys (it's in a little brown bottle that you mix with developer). Best of luck to her! I'd love to hear how it turns out!
Heck yes it will turn it orange. I have brown hair and put blonde on it before and it turned orange! It was so horrible, don't do it!!!
If she is going blond I recommend she go to a professional. removing color from darker hair is much harder than laying new color down. She could really damage her hair if it is not done right.
My sister also has brown hair and dyes it with "dark blonde" color. It does not turn out blonde, it comes out quite nice. It's still brown, but it's just a lighter brown. It looks better than some of those darker colors which can look kind of goth.
You should never dye your hair more than 2 shades lighter or darker than your natural shade. Dying brown hair blonde at home is asking for trouble. If you want this drastric of a change you need to consult a professional.
Note: if she dyes it blonde and it doesn't work, dying it brown again is not a simple fix.
I just want to say that I would NOT do this if I were your sister.
She should go to a colorist who has a lot of experience so that she doesn't mess her hair up.
Color is chemistry. It is also art. That's why good colorists have a consistent and happy clientele.
Just my two cents,
Dawn
i have dark brown hair, the one time i used blonde hair dye it turned orange... looked awful lol so if i want to go lighter i either dont do it, or let a pro do it usually has to be bleached first to go lighter
I have medium brown hair. The only way I was able to get blonde hair was by highlighting it. You can only go down about 2 levels of color. So, she can probably be light brown.
Be careful because brassy hair is not very attractive ! Therefore, I would rec that she goes to a light brown. I use a light brown ash to avoid the brassy color. Then, I add highlights by my face. See below:
She could start to go blonde is by getting a partial highlight. It's less $ than getting a full highlight. Have a stylist do the highlighting.
She has to be careful, make sure there is enough lightening agent in there to lift the color all the way. Hair goes through stages, and the reds are before the blondes so if her hair is dark, it is possible she will turn orange if the peroxide is not strong enough, or the blonde is not light enough. She could also be a yellow, brassy blonde if not picked properly. Most box dyes have hot line numbers to call for advice, she should call them before taking the chance, or just go to a salon.
I have light brown hair, so the blonde works for me... She's going to have to experiment or go to the salon.
Dark brown hair would probably do something weird I suspect.
