I have an 8 year old whom has been interested since about 2 in playing he had a baby one and would rock out!
He is now almost 9yrs old (November) and the Music store told me years ago to WAIT until they are 9yrs or 10yrs before you WASTE your money on lessons. They need to have LONG FINGERS and an attention span to told the guitar for long periods of time and learn the musical notes.
Now of course there are ALWAYS exceptions to every rule. If your child is eager to take lessons then pay for them as he goes, not a package deal ahead of time. Just in case he is not ready or can not hold the guitar for long periods of time due to body size and finger length.
Talk to many professionals.
Go to music stores or call around. Check out your local Community College as they send their students to a local music or thearter arts center. In Willoughby we have the Preforming Arts that Lakeland Community College sends their students to not only play instruments but to vocal lessons. If your son is interested in playing singing USUALLY goes hand in hand.
My son is receiving his electric guitar for his birthday, he is now making crafts to sell on consignment to earn lessons. This way I can see how serious he is. I am planning on getting him voice lessons for either birthday or christmas as he sings from the minute he gets up until he goes to bed at night. I thank the Lord for showing me JOY through this child. Even the simple things in life like watching an Ant he makes a song about!
It is such a gift to watch our children do these things.
Good luck I hope this helped.
