My 9 year old son has been complaining his legs hurt when he wakes up in the morning he looks stiff to me when he walks and seems to feel better after a warm shower and advil. He's ok when he gets home from school but around dinner time starts complaining again. I am going to give the pediatrician a call and see what they think when they open plus he has an appt next week for something else.

What can I do next?

pump up the calcium & potassium....thru bananas & milk. Use Motrin/Tylenol before bedtime, if necessary. Keeping him hydrated will help, too.

Our pediatrician described growing pains as the long bones growing so rapidly that the rest of the framework couldn't keep up, therefore creating the cramping. Stretching & flexibility exercises will help....as will warm baths/showers.

My kiddos have bouts of this too. I spoke with the pedi and he said if there is no apparent injury (bruise, cut, etc) it is growing pains and that advil and diet change (as Sue H pointed out) can help.

Yep, my son gets those sometimes too. Usually it is only for a day or two and then goes away for awhile. Advil and warm baths can help when it happens. :)

and don't forget a little Mommy Brand Magic. I remember, my mother had Magic Socks. They were very long, very soft and crazy-looking. They came up to my thigh when I was little (and now I know the warmth helped with the growing pains like a warm shower.)

If it were me I'd still get him checked because there is such a thing as pediatric arthritis and it can get worse if left untreated!
