I have a 10 month old Shih tzu/bichon mix.Up until now I have been able to manage the grooming.And I have never had to use a grooming service with another pet previous to theis.Anyway I called the vet's office (where I have been going for about 6 years) to make him an appoint.The receptionist said they needed to give him a bordatella vaccine before they could groom him.Is this really nessecary?I called Petsmart and they did not require the bordatella but could not give me an exact quote on the price.The vets office quoted me $35 and that sounded fair but now I have to pay for the bordatella on top of that.Any advise?I just want a good groomer for him but I want to make sure that there not charging for something that's unessecary.
Hello I would giveyour dog the boratella its not that much and it proctects you dog from getting sick, i been a groomer at petsmart and petco and they dont req it but highly suggest getting it cause, with out it your dog could catch a whats called kennel cough.
I am a veterinary technician and office manager of a small animal hospital. I would absolutely recc a Bordetella vaccination when your dog is groomed. It guards against kennel cough, which is airborne and spread in kennels, grooming facilities, hospitals, and nose to nose at the dog park. Even if you pick a groomer that doesn't require one (or anything but a Rabies) I would recc that you always update everything for your own dog's safety. We require Rabies, Distemper/Parvo and Bordetella for all dogs admitted for grooming. Good luck!!
I would go with what your veterinarian said. A bordatella shot should be mandatory by all. We've always had our dog groomed by the vet's office but thought about going to Petsmart and they told us we had to have the shot. Maybe you were given the wrong information. Both our vet and our boarding vacilities require a bordatella vaccine every 6 months. I wouldnt' go anywhere that didn't! Thank you to your husband for the work he does.
I would agree with Melissa 100%!! I have seen more dogs with kennel cough after visiting the groomer and/or being boarded while their owner was on vacation. I think it is TERRIFIC your vet requires the vac before being groomed. I definately recommend you follow your vets advice, it really beats having to visit the vet and a round of antibiotics in the future. Kennel cough spreads very quickly and can turn into more serious health issues if not treated correctly. Good luck with your pup!!
Most groomers do require the shot. It's a vaccine against a disease that's easy to get when the dogs are in close contact with other dogs. I'm surprised about Petsmart, my thought is that they just forgot to tell you.
If cost is an issue with the shot, check out the humane society for it... This is where we go for routine vac's and it is a fraction of the cost! I think we did all four cats and the dog for under $100.00 (hubby took them and paid)
