my 17mnth old has slept through the night since he was 4mnths old. when he wakes in th morning he will play in his crib intill someone comes to get him (even if it not for an hour) but for the past couple months he has been waking up screaming several times a night. he usually gets himself back to sleep in less then a minute and during the rare times we have to go in there we just pat him on the back for a couple minutes and he goes right back to sleep. we dont even have to pick him up. i though maybe he was cold but his room is warm enough and he feels toasty (but not to hot) so i dont know whats wrong. what can i do to get him to sleep peacefully

What can I do next?

Everyone wakes at night, but he's waking up more than he used to and crying now. If it's just for a minute, he might outgrow it because he's not asking for anyone, he's just getting himself resettled. I don't think this is a big deal, and didn't when my kids do it, but it's really annoying for anyone else in the house who wasn't awake at that time! I would try a couple of things: white noise might soothe him back to sleep when he wakes at night might help, and a nightlight might allow him to reconnect with reality when he wakes up. Good luck!

He's a baby and that's what they do. It would be more of a concern if he weren't able to get himself back to sleep most of the time. We all wake up during the night. Most of the time we don't even know we've done it. Babies do this also. They wake, fuss or in your son's case scream, and then go back to sleep. My oldest did it often too. Makes us jump from our bed and they are snoozing comfortably most of the time. My son still cries in his sleep at times and he's 6.

sleep is not finite... and is tweaked by developmental occurrences.
Normal.
I don't know of any baby/child/adult... that has slept the same way, since an infant.

He IS resetting himself back to sleep.
So that is good.
I would not interrupt that process for him.
Or it might backfire.

He IS self-soothing.
That is good.

Or, he may have "night terrors" which crops up from about 1 year old... and is purely a developmental phase.
You can look the term up, online.

We have an 18 month old and he has been doing the same thing. I started giving him a little Tylenol or Motrin before bed and it helps. I think he is having pain from teething. Good luck.
