Sally
My 10 year old Grand Daughter has suddenly developed daily head aches. They last any where from two hours to most of the day. My Daughter and I took her to the doctor yesterday and she has advised we take her for an eye exam which we will schedule soon. She will then have an MRI to rule out any other problems. She also has issues with encopresis which is a severe constipation and mega colan. All of this has possibly lead to some problems with her self image. She is an other wise bright child that loves science and has lots of friends. My question is has any one else had a child this age with the headaches and how did they treat them? I don't want to get in the habit of giving her too much pain meds as that can make the problem worse. My daughter just lost her job due to down sizing so we had to put the children on CHIP but I don't think that should be an issue as far as her doctors are concerned.
Well I took my grand daughter to the eye doctor and she did need glasses. She was excited about that. I was glad to know she thought it was cool to ware them. We will see how the headaches go. The next step is her gastroenterologist and if the headaches don't go away the neurologist. Thanks so much for all the advice .

Hi D.,
Sometimes a Chiropractor can help with the headaches. I use Chiropractors for many aliments I have and have heard others say that they couldn't get rid of headaches until they saw a chiropractor. Good luck and I hope see gets better soon.
Two of my children have had headaches that were triggered by allergies. They happen some parts of the year more than others, due to different pollens being in the air.
We have an MD on our team in my business and she put out a CD a while back about hormones. little girls are suffering from things like headaches, early periods, weight gain, fatigue b/c hormones being unbalanced. when we have too much estrogen, we have side effects. headaches being one of them.
estrogen is a growth hormone and it's in our food such as meats and dairy. so many people are estrogen dominant because of our diets and environment. most MD's just put them on the BC pill which then gives you more estrogen. if you're interested in teh CD, let me know!
i use a natural balancing cream and has helped many others. many MD's are recommending it.
Of course you know headaches can be a symptom of something serious, so by all means, get the MRI ASAP. However, I am sure you are also aware that MOST headaches are caused by either stress or allergies of some kind. And since she has digestive issues also, it could easily be either one or a combination of both, very possibly food allergies. Please call "Doc" Joel Wallach (a naturopathic doctor and vet) on the "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" radio show. The number is 1-888-379-2552; the time is 2 pm CT, M-F. You can also go to the following site to listen to previously recorded shows:

It is quite possible, perhaps even probable, that her problems can be solved with changes in her diet and by adding the right nutritional supplements.
If interested in trying Doc's recommendations, please contact me for information on getting the products at wholesale prices.
Best Wishes,

Children feel stress more than we give them credit. I would say the headaches are related to worrying about Mom's job and money. My daughter was 10 when her Daddy was out of work for a few months. She loved having him home but started having anxiety attacks at night. She was worried without knowing it. Another culprit could be allergies or needing glasses. What type of headache is it? Top of the head throbbing, behind the eyes, under eyes, dry eyes? If she weighs over 90lbs she could be getting ready to start her period.
Hope she feels better.
Thanks so much to all of you for the help I am still reading the responses and will let you know what each of the doctors say. I never would have dreamed there were so many special moms out there with so much helpful advise. At this time we are scheduled for an eye appointment, MRI and the G.I specialist at Cooks Childrens. I do think you are right that nutrition plays a vital role in a lot of this I will let you know how it all goes. God bless you all.
Encopresis is a HUGE sign of a digestive problem. Having this for a period of time would often lead to headaches. The digestive system is the second brain and is where you manufacture 50% of your neurotransmitters---the chemicals that send the messages in your brain.
I would recommend a phone consultation with Andrea Stevens. She is a cutting edge nutritionist that has helped many families whose children have such issues. Her website is www.healthbasics.net---but it doesn't really give you very good information. I would highly recommend calling her and just laying out the situation and asking her opinion if she could be of help. Her number is ###-###-#### . Her email is ____@____.com
I cannot recommend her highly enough. Your granddaughter's issues can be resolved with nutrition---it's that simple.
Please feel free to tell Andrea that D. Bateman referred you.
Please, please, please have her drink more water. Pure, filtered water- you can buy it for 25 cents a gallon out of the culligan machine at Wal-Mart. Water is the ultimate cure for constipation and I've read plenty of studies on it curing migraines as well! I discourage pain medications because they only alleviate the symptom, not the problem. And most times they create a bigger problem than the original ailment they were taken for- often unnoticed until later in life. And definitely, add fresh ground flax seed to all her foods and that will definitely help- promise!! Just buy whole organic flax seeds from the store and then grind them in a coffee grinder just before eating. Sprinkle them on her food (and yours!) and you have instant Omega 3's and fiber, fiber, fiber!!
But, definitely, she should be drinking half her body weight in ounces of water each and every day. So if she weighs 50 pounds, she needs 25 ounces of water daily. And she should avoid processed sugars and snacks. Sugar alone can actually cause headaches/migraines.
Hope this helps!
My daughter started having real bad headaches at the age of 5, and they would last for some time. Well, I took her to the doctor, she had MRI, eye exams, and all kinds of lab work done. It was determined that she suffered from Migraines. They put her on special meds after we went to a Neurologist. Well, I didn't like the meds because they were pain meds and made her sleepy. So, the doctor told me to try a hot caffinated soda. So, that is what she does still to this day sometimes. She is 21 now.
I am a nurse with a 9 year old daughter. She has had such severe constipation in the past, she's ended up at the hospital. She does have a megacolon and is suppose to be prone to constipation. The doctor wanted her on strong fiber supplements since she was 3! She also gets headaches too. I am one to treat our physical ailments with natural as much as able. My daughter, we have used natural fiber since she was 3, and her constipation is rare. Her headaches also come seasonally. She has sinus congestion. How I found this out, gave her mucinex, which clears up congestion in cavaties (like lungs or sinuses). If she had congestion in her sinuses giving her a headache, the mucinex would help, if it was something else, it wouldn't. It works every time. The next time your daughter has a headache, give her a proper dose for kids, you can get it over the counter at Wal-Mart, and be sure she drinks a large glass of water the same time she takes the mucinex, that ensures a better result. I've been using since I was 30 to handle what my doctor's thought were "migraines". I was having sinus headaches (no allergy or sinus symptoms just the headache.) Be sure she starts eating proper food for her intestines. Even if she does have a condition, if she is prone to constipation, we all need more fiber. None of us get enough but try adding it naturally since she has a long life ahead of her, it will develop good habits instead of medicinal habits. Liz
Research shows that one of the major causes of headaches is dehydration. Not enough water also causes constipation. I would try handing her a glass of water everytime you think of it. It is worth a try. Other causes could include allergies, but I'm sure her doctors will look into all of that.

Grandma of 2 great boys
My step-son is 13 and he in the last year or so has started getting migraines. His mother has a long history of migraines and I know they can be hereditary. What we have found more times than not, is that certain foods trigger his headaches. I did some research to figure out any kinds of foods; the obvious, caffeine, chocolate, then one thing that I didn't know was hot dogs. Whatever is in plain old hot dogs can trigger migraines. I know buy all beef light hot dogs, and it has been much better since. My kids love hot dogs, so I had to find an alternative for him. If we eat a corn dog out somewhere, he will end up with a migraine, so he knows what to stay away from. We don't drink sodas much at our house, but when he does he ends up with one. Taking her to the dr. would not her just to rule out any other problems...but maybe watch to see if she eats something particular that triggers the headaches.
I have a friend whos 13 year old went through the same thing, after all the MRI and eye exam etc. she had her on Nutritional food supplement that made a night and day for her and to this day she has no more issues. I will be very happy to provide information on the products.
I would love to invite your daughter an opportunity presentation on Tuesday evening that may give her some financial freedom working full time or part time for a 20 year old debt free solid Company.
Happy New Year!
A.
Hi D.,
You have received a lot of great responses concerning the headaches. I am actually responding concerning the encopresis. My 8 yo daughter is encopretic as well and it has been so difficult for her, and our whole family! My heart goes out to your granddaughter! Have you heard of Dr. Collins and his protocol for treating encopresis? His website is http://www.soilingsolutions.com/. This program was a miracle for our family! If you haven't heard of it, I highly recommend checking it out. If you or your daughter have any questions about it, please, please contact me. I know what it feels like to be dealing with this issue and feeling like you are alone! I would love to help in any way I can.
S.
Head aches can be caused from growth spurts. Have you noticed your granddaughter eating more lately or growing quickly? If she is having growing pains anywhere she can take motrin every 4-6 hours as needed for the pain. My son gets growing pains so bad in his legs that he can't even walk sometimes, he does end up taking motrin every day for 2-4 weeks at a time when this happens but the doctor have assured me that this is okay and won't harm him.
Also, my kids were on CHIP for a couple of years, I loved it. Your kids will still get great medical care at a very small cost to you. I wish I could trade our crappy company insurance for CHIP!!!
The advice you've already recieved is wonderful.......but make sure you have the MRI. My neice was 9 when she was diagnosed with brain cancer that was noticed only because of her headaches. I'm not trying to scare you, I just want to make sure that you rule out everything -- including the allergies and other things that they'd mentioned.
I'm sure that you'll get it figured out soon and that it'll be alright. If it is something more significant, CHIPS will still help out -- if not, there are MANY hospitals around the country that can and do treat children with little/no insurance so don't let that deter you at all.
I was done with the post and then reconsidered the age of the child. This is a bad age for children. In addition to the things they imagine, like if someone doesn't like me it is the end of the world, kids are also worst about being hateful to each other at this age. Google cyber bullying because this type of stuff can happen to any of your girls as they get older. She is not quite middle school age but kids are aleady doing horrible things to each other so the stress angle should be considered as much as the physical causes.
Also, I would be very attentive to what the doctors tell you because the insurance can be a big deal. My friend has a 14-year-old son with benign tumors in his brain and heart and I believe one of the reasons they have not "done" anything in the last four years is because of the insurance. You are going to have to try to "make sure" they are providing the treatment and/or tests that the child needs.
The information about watching what your granddaughter eats is a good one. Also, it is helpful to try to figure out if the headaches seem to be migraines or sinus related. The latter would probably be stress and/or allergy related. The migraines are different for everyone. I have only had about three bona fide migraines. I had a tooth pulled a little over a week ago. The only caffeine I get is from sodas. You cannot drink soda when you have had a tooth extracted and it didn't occur to me to drink iced tea. When I told my friend I had a migraine she suggested I let a soda go flat and within about a half hour, the headache was gone so for some, caffeine causes them for others, it makes them go away. I would venture to guess that the ingredient in hot dogs that makes them a no-no is MSG. This link has some valuable information and you might want to buy the book.

I would highly recommend accupuncture. Continue looking at potential medical reasons but accupuncture can be highly effective and is much more respected by western-educated doctors than it was in the past. It is also covered on many insurance policies. I had problems with my sciatic nerve daily for six years. One trip to the accupuncturist for something else and I have not sufferred a day since, and that was four years ago.
This sounds overly simple, but my 9 yo had headaches everyday at school but not on the weekends. She wears glasses so we had those checked. In trying to diagnose the problem we found out that there was a boy sitting next to her that tapped continuously by the afternoon she would be irritated, have a headache and go to the nurse. Once she moved to another side of the room, no more headache. hope it is a simple solution.
Could be hormones as she is 10 and may be entering into puberty. Just a thought. I had migraines as a child and on into my adult years adn was also seen by a chiropractor, but can't really remember if it helped. My parents have always told me as a toddler and in kindergarten, I would complain of headaches when my hair got to long. My mom would cut it and then they would stop for a while. But I don't know why. I was to young to remember. Could also be triggered by allergies or sinuses.
Good luck,
L.
I started suffering from severe headaches and migranes at age 5, We did everything from doctors, acupuncture, chiropractors and nothing ever made them stop they just help to ease the pain. Over the years I discovered that I did have some triggers for the migraines, MSG and Perfume. However I still suffered from headaches on a daily basis. Finally when I was about 18 I was diagnosed with TMJ disorder. I went to a dentist that specializes in this and was made a custom retainer that I wear at night and I have been headache free ever since! It sounds kind of out there but it might be worth looking into I sure wish we had found out about this when I was younger! I see an amazing dentist in Plano all he does is work with TMJ and headaches here is his website http://www.benderdds.com/mainpage.html
I hope you are able to find some relief
When I was in 2nd grade, I started having problems with my vision, where everything in one or both eyes went all white. After seeing several drs. they determined it was migraines, but I was too young to feel the pain. They told me once I hit puberty, the pain would set in, which it did. After seeing a few different drs., we finally found a pedi neurologist that worked for us. I was on 2 daily medications to prevent migraines, and meds for when they hit. I had mri's, eeg's, and ekg's just to rule out anything else. We also played around with my diet to try to rule out any food aversions. Most people figure that migraines are for adults, but that's not true. I started having them in 2nd grade. I still occasionally get migraines, but not as often as I used to (once or twice a week when I was in high school). I think they were puberty related, because they were really bad in high school, then started becoming less frequent after that. I hope you can find a dr. you really like and that will find a good treatment for whatever is causing these headaches. I know first hand how difficult this is for your grand daughter, and I feel her pain.
I started getting migrains at about 11 - I was treated by various neurologists with various pain relief methods, and MRI and CT scans showed nothing - they put me on antidepressants and said maybe it was all in my head (no pun intended). Imitrex has been a godsend for me, but I couldn't take it pregnant.I finally found relief while I was pregnant with my 5 year old. It was a chiropractor... and I was in the middle of a migraine the second time I went to see her. She adjusted my neck and I thought I was going to vomit. 10 minutes later, the headache was gone. I tried it again three days later, in the throws of another migraine - since I couldn't take my meds pregnant. Again, she adjusted, again headache gone in just a few minutes.I see her twice a week now, for adjustments, and I haven't had a migraine in 3 months... no drugs, either.S.
I don't know what's going on, so I'm glad you're having her checked out. When my daughter was 12 she was having bad headaches. As it turned out she had menengitis. See how your granddaughter feels to place her chin to her chest. If it's terribly painful it might be that. The only test for it is a spinal tap. may GOD bless her with relief soon. GOD'S blessings to you and yours.
Hi D., I am a Grandmother of 4 girls and come from a huge family with lots of girls. Headaches could be cause from several things. Early puberty was the cause of my 11 year old grand daughters and my daughters headaches. Once thier periods started the headaches stopped. On occassion the will have one a few days before but rarely. Also the stress the hold in is a cause. Both of them were a little over wieght and constantly getting teased and won't say anything about it, it is hard to talk about. Don't know if that is your grandaughters case but it was for mine. Thyroid or blood sugar could be a cause as well. But if she is having problems with her bowels, you should try stool softeners for a week or two and see if that helps. I know when they don't work right you feel bad all over. I pray it's nothing serious and that she gets better soon.
I can only speak from experience, but I was about that age when they discovered I had a weak eye and glasses fixed the problem. An eye exam may be the perfect answer. Good luck!!!
First of all, you should have no problems with her being on CHIP..there are some great doctors that accept it! Second, I wonder if there is some sort of hormonal relationship to her headaches? At 10, she could be in the early stages of puberty. I know for me, right after I have a child, I get the most awful headaches! It is totally hormonal related, and it does get better. The only thing that helped me was a specific antidepressant. (You can imaging how I felt at first about that..I was not crazy, I had headaches!!) But it did help. I am now learning that I have reactions to gluten, which is a big culprit for me, as well as thyroid problems..so, dont let it go if they find nothing to be wrong..there are lots of culprits, and a headache is a sure fire way for your body to tell you that something really is wrong. Good luck ~A.~
When my son was 8 yrs., he started having headaches. It coincided with a stressful move and adjustment to living in another country. They could not find any cause for them, and they finally stopped after a few months. It was probably due to excessive stress from the move and new school situation.
Another option: You might take her to a chiropractor. There are some chiropractors who specialize in working with children and they can really help with headaches. Dr. Erin Stark on Beltline and Preston would be good. I am new to the experiences of chiropractic and I have been very impressed with all they can do.
Hi, I am a mother of four and my son who is also 10 suffers with severe headaches. I have yet took him to the dr but I will be her this month. He has been having these headaches for about two years and I haven't really been putting the signs together till now when they got more frequent. Before showers would help but now he has to take alieve then go lay down for several hours to feel better. In my case his biological mother had migraines and required shots when she was a young teen. I am hoping this won't be the case for him but we will find out soon. I hope you find out what is causing it and I hope it is something small keep me intouch and let me know. I will post on here when I find something about my son
D.,
When I was in 4th grade, I was admitted to the hospital for 2 nights so they could do all sorts of tests on me to see why I was getting headaches.
They ended up diagnosing me with migraines. They gave me a prescription to take when I was getting a headache, so it's not like I had to take them on a daily basis.
Doctors now days are VERY cautious with kids. (This is a great thing!) My daughter had hurt her wrist and they couldn't see anything wrong in the x-ray, so they scheduled her for an MRI to rule out Leukemia. Horrifying for us adults who love them, but they just want to catch anything early so they can treat it before it is life threatening...
Chances are your grand-daughter is just having headaches from stress...
Good Morning D.,
I have been taking Waiora products for several monhs now and it has resolved my allergies, headaches, hypothyroidism and my over all health. I no longer take allergy medicine or my thyroid medicine. Another lady, Linda, was introduced to the Waiora products and here is her testimony "WOW - I've had results in only two weeks. Using the NCD and the AgariGold drops, I have been headache free for over 10 days. Can you imagine, after nearly 30 years, every single morning waking up with a headache, or most of the time a migraine. My bad skin is clearing up and my boyfriend says I am looking younger. I am also putting on weight. I had gotten down to 105 pounds, and now I am 120. So, something is working. It's been a long time since I got up in the morning and felt so wonderful. I'm Linda C, from Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Thanks, Waiora!
Here is a link if you would like to find out more http://my.waiora.com/home.php?895341
Blessings on your day,

go to www.discoverlimu.com/jcarden. This is a superfood that has helped people with headaches as well as constipation. I have testimonials I could share with you if you email me. This is not a medicine, it is a vegetable from the ocean and tastes great.
Check it out.

My daughter started getting migraines when she was 5. They went away for a while and have come back over the past couple of months- she is now 7-1/2. She has seen her doctor and he gave us meds for nausea. (Her headaches are so bad- that she sometimes throws up) She had a cat scan- which thankfully came back normal. Next week we see a pediatric neurologist to see what could be causing them. We did all these same steps when she was 5 and they found nothing wrong. Then she was too young for any meds. I dont think there is much they can give one this young. I have found when she gets them- to keep the room dark and let her rest, and usually she falls asleep. Good luck to you!
If she drinks milk I'd consider cutting it out. It is the number one food allergen, is mucous forming and can also cause constipation. Yeast is also a culprit for constipation. oxypowder.com is a product that helps constipation.
When my daughter was around that same age the same thing happened to her. I finally figured out that she wasn't drinking enough water and was dehydrated. She didn't have any other health issues though. Do you think your granddaughter might need to drink more water? Good luck and happy new year!!
when my daughter was 5 she was getting headaches. it turned out she had a cavity and the root was exposed. she ended up needing a crown. headache gone.
i'm not saying that's what it is, but you never know what can cause a headache.
you might want to also consider sinus headache/allergies.
think outside the box.
good luck!

This may seem like some silly answers, but I thought I'd throw them out there for you to consider.
My sister got terrible migraines when she used a particular shampoo. (VO5) When she changed her shampoo, she didn't get them as often. Every time she would get a migraine, she would make a list of things she had done or eaten or used in the last 12 hours and she usually figured out what had triggered the migraine. You might try changing some of the products she uses.
When I was growing up, I had bad headaches for about a year. Had no idea how to make them stop. Then, I decided to get my hair cut to be more in fashion with everyone else. At the time I had long, thick hair down to my waist. I soon noticed I wasn't having my daily headaches. Turns out the weight of my hair was the thing giving me the headaches.
I hope it is something as harmless as these two ideas, but I wish you all well in finding out what is causing her headaches.
God Bless.
Hi D.. My now 17 yr. old daughter also experienced daily headaches as well as horrible migraines where she would be incapacitated for two or three days at a time. She was about 11 when they started. We had several trips to the Pedi who blew it off saying it was because she was getting ready to start her period and a few trips to the ER. On the final one the ER doc had them do an MRI because she suspected that her sinuses were impacted. She was right, severly impacted. They put her on a massive decongestant and pain killers until they were clear. We also had to use saline into her nostrils to run back into the sinus cavities. It took a few weeks but finally the headaches started to abate. She was like a whole new kid. Not sure if that is what is going on with your granddaughter but it might be worth a trip to the ENT if the other testing comes up negative. Good luck and hope she feels better soon!!
