Goodbye Morning Nap? When and How Does It Disappear?

How do I know if the morning nap is phasing out? My almost 9 month old has been greatly improving her sleep now that we've gotten past her jetlag and ear infection. She has only really been getting up once a night which is amazing.

Well Sunday night she only got up once, downed an entire bottle early in the morning and went back to bed until around 7:15 am. She usually takes a morning nap but she absolutely refused and no amount of crying, fussing, or soothing would get her down. So we played the rest of the morning and she took an amazing 2 and a half hour afternoon nap. It was pure bliss. That night we got her to sleep at 6:30 pm, she woke up briefly at 7 which was my fault beacause I poked my head in there to check on her and she woke up (ahhh why do I do that?!), but other than that she slept solid until around 4 am where she downed 8 ounces of formula and went back to bed until 8 this morning. Today, however, she is taking a morning nap around 9:45.

I've been following Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, and the theory kind of goes like this--- you want to wake the baby up at 7 to preserve the morning nap so that the morning nap isn’t too late or too long because you want to preserve the afternoon nap so you can preserve the early bedtime. If you mess up early in the day it seems to be hard to recoup by night. Ahhhh!

But I thought after yesterday's experience that she was ph asing out the am nap that I could compensate by letting her sleep in. Well today she fought me a little but was clearly ready for a morning nap today and is now taking one, but about an hour later than she normally would. Now I'm anticipating what is going to happen for the rest of the day. There's the "never wake a sleeping baby rule" but then the book says "unless they sleep in too late" "unless the morning nap is too long". There's so many exceptions to the rule! I know in the end I'm just supposed to do what works for my baby, but I'm just kind of figuring this out as I go along.

What's your experience? Is it a big deal if I let her sleep in a little since she got a great night's sleep the night before with an early bedtime? What are the signs that she's over the morning nap? Is this transitional period a several month kind of thing? I feel like as soon as I've gotten this little one figured out, then she goes through some sort of developmental thing and changes it up on me!

What's your experience?

What can I do next?

I've heard that a baby transitions to 2 naps or goes through a complete make-over in the nap department around a year. Sounds like yours is there. My daughter used to nap around 9 but now she sleeps until 8:30 (instead of 7:00) and naps around 11 through the 'lunch hours'. I'm kind of the care-free laid back parent so I'd say if you're fighting with your kid to get them to sleep, let them back up to play... I did this with my daughter (14m) and found her laying on the floor in her nursery finally ready to nap. I picked her up and put her in her crib where she immediately fell asleep.
The first couple of days can be tough but they're adjust and get to a new normal.

However you make it work, best of luck,
R.

Ah! The gone-too-soon, often under-apreciated, morning nap! LOL I think my son stopped his a.m. nap at around O. year.
The good news: an earlier, longer afternoon nap!
The bad news: At around 3, that will go away too!
The good news: At 3,4,5, you can give them a "quiet time" in their rooms for an hour or so. The bad news: They don't always cooperate!
The good news: Bedtime can be early when they are not taking any naps! LOL

I, personally, would play it mostly by ear. I always tried to keep my son's schedule as consistent as possible--planning stuff around naps and bedtimes. Now that he's 5, I still try to make sure he is in the tub by 7 and in bed by 8, but I do allow a little more flexibility with summer, etc. Your daughter will probably continue to take a good afternoon nap for quite a while (YIPPEE!). She may even take an occasional morning nap, too.
The bottom line is that kids are kids and they aren't machines--some days they are more tired, etc. After all, she didn't read the sleep book yet! You kind of just get to a point where if your kid seems tired, you will know that she will nap or go to be a little earlier. Try to roll with it a little more.....and ENJOY that awesome afternoon nap, on the occasions when all of the planets align perfectly, and you will again, experience bliss!
Mom bottom line on naps: We'll take 'em any way we can get 'em. Good luck!

Hi. I have a 22 month old little girl and she used to take a morning and afternoon nap and the morning nap got phased out. It just seems to happen! I would try to put her down and she wouldnt want to sleep. Now she does the afternoon nap and even some days she wont want that either. But I would say 90% of the time she will take an afternoon nap. It just happens.

I want to say for us, the morning nap went away around one year old. I think a huge part of that had to do with the daycare. At one year old they put the kids in a different room which has a set naptime. Both of my kids have been on the same schedule since that day. They go to bed about 8pm. They wake up around 7am. My son will sleep a bit longer, and on the weekends when I dont' have anywhere to be I'll let him sleep a little longer. He takes a nap from about 12:30 - 3:00. If he sleeps in a bit I'll put him down a little later, but I don't like him to sleep past 4pm because I don't want to push back the 8pm bedtime any because the next morning he may not be able to sleep in. I think if it seems like she doesn't need two naps, just phase it out. Just follow your instincts. The most important thing is that they get a nap to refresh, I think you can play around with the timing and see what works best for her.
