If you get books, get the board books. That way if the baby plays with it, it isn't as likely to tear.

We are quite fond of a video series called Signing Time! which teaches ASL (American Sign Language), has catchy songs and cute kids. We've given our young friends either the DVD's or the board books that go with them. You can check them out at www.signingtime.com

It really depends on the kid, but you can't go wrong with books, blocks, or anything musical! I have 2 little ones. The first still plays with the presents that she got for her first birthday and she's almost 3! I think she likes the large leggo blocks the best of all. Hope this helps a little... i know the toy aisle can be a little overwhelming when you aren't shopping for your own kid! I'm sure whatever you chose will be well loved and much appreciated.

The first b day is easy, they don't have everything yet! If they do get duplicates you can leave it at grandma's or ect. Just make sure you keep in the age category, that is very helpful tool they put on the outside of packaging. Goodluck and have fun whatever you decide I'm sure they'll love it. This is a fun time when you and your friends start out building your families. ha

I am also a fan of books. Some of the old classics like "Pat the Bunny" are great for 1 year olds.
Another thing that is special for little girls is their first baby doll or first baby doll stroller/cradle/seat or their first little set of table and chairs. My little girl loved all those things and we kept them for years. In fact I still have my first doll. ;-)

I agree, books are great. Esp hard books with large pictures so they can turn the pages themselves. My son also loved those stackable cups. He still plays with them (he is 19 months).

What i like to do is buy a plain solid dress and add your creations ex: lace, flowers, embroidery, and/or appliques. Pick their favorite colors. Buy a plain pair of socks and dress them up to match outfit or else. It's alot of fun to allow your created mine to bloom. Have fun and may god bless you and your loved ones. Also, just for asking advice about how to be a better mom. God's listening and will help you along the way. Because you've already received a wonderful title from god:mother of of an 8 month old baby girl. My first-born baby girl is 31 years old cristy. Take care and god bless. L.

Hey there~
Wooden train set (girl or not!) from Ikea, or you could try some really great age appropriate toys from Fundamentally Toys located on West Gray.. they gift wrap too! Also Olive Ann located in the Heights on 19th, and they gift wrap too.
Good luck,
