Hello fellow moms. Until now I've had the luxury of working a couple days a week and being home all evenings with my son. Unfortunatly my husband's job at Chrysler is being outsourced and we have no clue as to how long we have until they decide to start this change (he's not a contract employee so they aren't obligated to tell him). My son has been attending daycare for over a year and we are very happy with the center... the problem is that they close at six and are only open weekdays. The jobs I am interviewing for will require a few evenings per week as well as weekend availability,so i'm in a bit of a bind as to how to cover childcare for these shifts. Please reply if you have any thoughts/ suggestions for affordable babysitters, in home daycare, etc. that are available weekends and evenings... Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the suggestions! Upon getting the address for 'craigslist.com', I checked it out and ended up coming upon the second most (mamasource being the first) amazing mom's resource on the web-- www.babysitters.com - like mamasource, it connects local resources- in this case, hundreds of well qualified sitters to parents in need. The site gives you a profile on nearby sitters, as well as there level of experience and availability and references... they even offer guidence on subjects such as how to interview potential candidates, run background checks, determine payment rates, etc. Also all profiles include the age groups they have experience with, weather they have worked with special needs children, and info on additional services (housework, laundry, pet care)they are willing to provide. They charge a $30 subscription fee for 3 months to get the sitter's contact info, but as a mom who has had tremendous difficulty finding a sitter outside of family that is enthusiastic and trustworthy, I cannot stress how well worth it the fee is... They also have a job postings section in which (subscribed) parents can post an add for a specific job (recurring or singular) and get replies from all interested sitters. The babysitters have to pay a fee as well so you know that you are getting access to only babysitters who are sincere in their desire to provide childcare. Tonight I hired my first sitter from the site (one of 5 who i interviewed after they responded to my 3 day old job posting) and was unbelivably satisfied. I have tried to post the site as a recommendation here on mamasource, but as their is no local buisness address, i've had no luck. Seriously though, it is free to check out and read the profiles of sitter in your area. My mom (who has 2 autistic sons) went in on the membership cost with me and now each of us have the names and contact info for some 20 sitters- info we will still have when our membership is up... Honest to God, they did not give me anything for this endorsement, its just been so long since i've been this enthusiastic about a resource that i had to share it with all of you... thanks again,
A.

Call the state's daycare licensing division. They can send you information on after hours care. You can also check with local universities (child development/education departments) and see if any of the students will baby-sit. I would also ask at your current daycare center. Our favorite sitter works at my son's daycare. She loves to sit for us and can always use the extra money since we pay almost 2$ more than the daycare.

Hi A.,
If you are still interested in a evening/weekend caregiver, I would love to speak with you. I am a fourth grade teacher at Oakland Christian School and I have been looking for a family needing evening childcare. I am a step mom to a three year old girl and I am expecting my first baby in July. My husband and I live in Madison Heights. I have an elementary teaching licence with an endorcement in early childhood. I also have a ton of experience with children. Please keep me in mind if you are still looking for someone. My husband worked the 3pm-11pm shift for a year and recently went back to days, I know how hard that shift can be. :)

Thanks,

C.
