Gift for a Soldier on Leave

My friend, who is a doctor in Afganistan, is home on leave. His mom called and invited me to a last minute picnic tomorrow. I would love to bring a small gift. Can anyone help me with this? I might add I am older than his mom so any help I might get in selecting a gift would be appreciated beyond words. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I get my brother, who is also in the military, a gift card to a bookstore. He isn't allowed to bring much back, so I know at least he can get a book or something to do while on the long flight. It's small, tangible and can be passed around to other bored soldiers when he gets tired of it.

Hi A....how about a gift certificate for a massage? Most massage therapist will tailor the treatment to the individual. For example, if he prefers to just have work on shoulders, neck & feet, that should be fine. If he prefers not to disrobe, the massage therapist could do a chair massage (usually client is fully clothed). My point is, there are lots of options and massage is a very thoughtful gift that everyone appreciates - especially people who wouldn't otherwise do it for themselves! I am a massage therpist in Chicago and would be glad to help you find a licensed professional in your area...just let me know! you can email me through my website www.massageisagift.com

A nice card letting him know how much you appreciate him is great, and since he's been gone, he might miss some American eats. Maybe a gift card to go out to eat would do, or, per my husband, a summer sausage, cheese and cracker package! He's a man, he should know. :)

A gift card to ITunes or something similar would be nice--you can pick those up at Wal-Mart, other retail stores or www.itunes.com

Bring a special food treat. They cannot travel with really anything, so perhaps a box of bakery cookies or sweets I see another poster said sausages or cheese that is a great idea.My son just returned from serving six years and always enjoyed those. His mom might enjoy some of that too!

How about a key chain sized digital photo frame. They are only about 12 dollars and he can keep his loved ones with him all the time.
