My daughter will be two in May and I am having the hardest time getting her to brush her teeth. I bought her her own toothbrush and special toothpaste and she still refuses. Is there something else I can try or something I can use to wipe her mouth out that will be as effective as brushing?

What can I do next?

Hello, I also have a 2 yr old, I actually wash his teeth first and then let him try to do it himself. Sometimes its really hard, but you have to keep on trying and trying. I dont recommend the "finger tooth brush" because it is really soft and it wont clean as well as a toothbrush. Also, if you are afraid that she will swallow the tothpaste, there is a training toothpaste that is safe to swallow. I believe the brand is Oral-B. That paste is the one I use, since my boy swallows it and still doesnt know how to spit it out. Good luck!

Hi My name is M. i have an 2yr old and one that is almost 5. If your daughter watches barney there is a tape that bareny teaches them how to brush their teeth or Gerber sell toothpaste along with brush(that fits on your finger) that you can brush there teeth. That one is good i used it but watch out my daughter kept biting on my finger. Ouch

HI,
I used to have the same problem with my two boys brushing their teeth. Basically I would just have to hold their mouth open while they fight me so I can brush their teeth. Then I started to ask them if they wanted to be big boys and help. They started to like brushing their teeth. It may take some time but they will get used to it. Have you tried the little finger tooth brushes that they sell for younger children that might be easier to use. Good Luck.

My son and I brush our teeth together. It helps for him to see me do it too. I know there are those brush things you can slip on their/your finger, but I've never tried them. At this age, you will do a better job brushing their teeth than they will, so maybe have her do the front teeth, then you take over and do the back. All of my sons have given me problems through the years with teeth brushing. Although this sounds mean, if you are having a real problem with getting her to open her mouth, you can slightly pinch her nose. Their natural reaction is to open their mouth, then you can get in there quickly with the toothbrush. Anytime I have had to use this tactic, for the next several weeks there is no problem brushing their teeth. I only use that as a last resort and if they are being especially difficult that day! Most of the time pulling the big boy card works well. Let her hold her toothbrush, put the toothpaste on, turn on the water, etc. Of course you are actually controlling these things, but they feel like they're doing it all and are a bit more willing to brush.

It took a while for my daughter to brush her teeth-I used to be in the dental field & never thought I'd have such a problem. Basically I let her watch me brush my teeth & then she takes her tooth brush & imitates me. Now she will ask for her toothbrush & brush her teeth every morning & before bed. Patience is the key-don't force her, & you can use a clean cloth & wipe off her teeth until she gets into a routine all on her own. Good luck....remember-it will take a while but monkey see monkey do helps out a lot when she sees she is brushing her teeth with mommy or daddy.

Maybe try putting a little calendar with the days of the week on the wall in the bathroom, let her pick out some special stickers, and then put a sticker up every time she brushes. I work with teens in trouble in a shelter and have kids that never brushed their teeth. We literally made games out of brushing their teeth including making up a really stupid "brush brush brush your teeth" song (it was sooo corny!) so that brushing was fun, and believe it or not it worked! I know one mom who had her kids brush their teeth in the tub right before they got out each night. Make it fun, good luck!

Since she is only 2....why don't you brush her teeth and tongue for her and have fun while doing it. You can look for any videos for toddlers on hygiene as well.

Teeth brushing is very important to their dental hygiene and I am
amazed at the amount of children with rotten teeth in their mouth.

Good luck.

Will she let you help?

My daughter is 2 and we have not really figured it out yet. But I can brush her teeth... we use vowels. I say "A-E-I-O-U" and she repeats them and I brush. If I let her have the toothbrush she just sucks the toothpaste off! : ) Lately I have let her do it after me, and she gets the motion going. So soon enough she will get it.

Try to help her.

At 14 months, my daughter loves it. She think it's funny when I brush her tongue. I usually do it at the same time and show her and kidda play with her and she does okay. Of course she doesn't do it by herself yet, but getting her used to the idea at this age was my only concern. She has tried to take the toothbrush off my hands and if I'm not in a rush usually at night when we brush, I let her.
