Gender Ever Wrong on Ultrasound??

My husband and I are expecting our second child, and for a number of reasons that I won't go into here (or else this question would be really long!!), we and almost all of our family and friends were convinced the baby was a girl. At the 20 week ultrasound, we were told it's a boy, but the pictures we have are not as conclusive as they were with our first son, who was quite obviously male! I know it's more common to make a mistake and be told it's a girl when baby turn out to be a boy, but have any of you ever experienced a mistake the other way around or know anyone who has? In other words, have you or anyone you know been told boy and then baby turned out female? Thanks!

What can I do next?

This actually just happened to someone I know. She was told a couple of times that it was a boy, then on a later sono, they said it was a girl. They attributed it to the fact that she had been on a bunch of hormones and fertility meds early on that could have made things look "a little swollen". Hope you find some answers!

Can you have another ultrasounds? Some OBs have ultrasounds in their offices and can do it themselves instead of seeing the tech. And, you'll know in 20 weeks anyways!

My daughter had several ultrasounds the first 6 months due to high risk with diabetes. Everytime, the tech would say it looked like a boy, or was fairly certain it's a boy, and when asked point blank, even noted it on one of the photos as MALE. Then in her 7th month she was refering to her baby as "he" and a new tech asked her why she was under the assumption the baby was a boy, and she explained. He then pointed to a very nice view of 2 legs, 2 little bottom cheeks and NOTHING between... It was a girl after all. What's really cute is, my daughter had already started the baby book in blues, browns, and greens with trucks and numbers and had the name all stamped and done in scrap book fashion like you wouldn't believe! It was adorable, but then on about the 12th page it says, "so we went to the dr again and to our surprise" and you turn the page, and it glows in pink and lavendar with lace and flowers and says "YOU'RE A GIRL!" And sure enough, she's a girl, and so adorable we can't imagine her as a boy. So, yes it can be wrong. But it turns out just right in the end.

As you said, it's usually the other way around, but a couple we know had a couple of ultrasounds and were told each time they were having a boy, but she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. So, yes, it is possible, but fairly rare. Congratulations on your newest little angel, and may he/she be healthy and happy!

I was told my 2nd was a girl. So the pink dress I spent forever picking out. So someone had to go pick out a blue outfit!! BUT I read on a friends fb page that there's a test they're doin at home to confirm gender...something about acidity in urine? And it's line draino or something? I thought it weird but you may google it. Supposedly I'd it turns a certain color it tells gender based on body ph or something. Idk. Hope that helps.

Happened to me! Had my 2nd sono and they said that we were having a boy. Started to prepare for my 2nd little boy. Later in pregnancy they had to do another sono and I asked them to double check just to be sure. Nope sorry you are having a girl! At least I knew before she was born!

My son, who I was told was probably a girl but not to go paint the nursery pink (I had a great, funny, doc), will be 19 on the 15th.....yes, it happens - I even looked at the sono and I could see the 'important stuff'....

Yes, my husbands cousin went to her gender u/s and was told it was a boy. She had to have another u/s due to a complication where they found out it was actually a girl!!!! They had already bought all boy things!!!

I can tell you though, I just recently went through something similar. We were told this baby was a girl. I just didn't believe it. I've been having dreams the entire pregnancy that baby is a boy. I just went for an u/s at 38 weeks to check weight...she said 110% girl! So, sometimes our minds just play tricks on us.

I have a friend that was told it was absolutely a boy. So that's what they bought for, picked out a name for etc.
Baby was born..surprise! It was a girl! Turns out it was the umbilical cord "just right" to look like a boy.
So yes, they can be wrong.

Of course it can be wrong, but a majority of time it is right. There is a ultrasound board on babycenter.com that you can post it and get others opinions, and a few on there are us techs. I have done my fair share of time on this site and have three boys so if you want to pm I can look too. I figured out my nephew was a boy on an us that was not supposed to show gender (they didn't find out).

That being said, I was in your shoes with ds#2. I planned my life out. College, get married, have a boy and then have a girl. But, it was a boy. It was quite a shock. But he is awesome!!

be careful if you try the Drano... I did it and it is very toxic! and practically exploded, if you must try it, try it outside. but it was right when I did it and right when a friend of mine did it. just be VERY careful! you mix drano crystals with your urine, if it turns blue it is a girl, if it turns brownish yellow it is a boy (on mine, a boy, it was blue on top where there were till bubbles but it was definitely brownish yellow otherwise)

I'm a little curious - what has you and your family convinced it is a girl? Are they geneticists and have access to the DNA? Unless they've all seen the fetus or the chromosomes, everything else is just old wives' tales and you've got a 50/50 chance of being right about your gut feeling.

I have two boys. I was told they were both boys at the ultrasound and they both turned out to be boys.

Had a friend who was told to expect a girl, based on ultrasound, and it was a boy. If the baby is not at just the right angle, things can be hidden. I gender all that important?

The only sure way to know gender is amniocentesis; any other way -- ultrasound, old wives' tales, "I just feel like it's a boy/girl" -- can't predict with 100 percent certainty.
