If you are wanting to try something, Mylicon drops work great and I've also found that Gripe Water works as well, too! It works for colic, hiccups, gas and some other things as well. It's 100% organic also. You can buy it at Kroger. :)
My little girl is almost 4 weeks old. She farts a lot. I get gas fairly regularly too, but hers seems to be bothering her. It even seems to wake her up sometimes. I am trying to cut out chocolate because I heard that could be a cause. (I breastfeed 100%) Any ideas on preventative measures or something I can give her after she already has gas? I would rather find the most natura solution.

Hi D. :)
Do you eat onions? They have been known to cause gas in breast fed babies, along with other strong, smelly foods. Might give it a try. I was lucky, none of my 5 babies were troubled by anything I ate.
Best of luck,
A.
It is GOOD that your baby farts a lot. There is NOTHING wrong with that. That means she is expelling the internal gas that is accumulating.
If she did not fart, then it would cause gas pains inside her... and she would cry and be in pain.
My daughter as an infant, did NOT fart... and she had BAD gas pains as a baby... it is very painful. And she'd cry a lot. So we gave her Mylicon gas drops and it works really fast.
And yes, cut out things that you eat, that cause gas. If you look online, you can find out what "gassy" foods to avoid.
If she is not having pain/problems due to gas, you don't necessarily have to give her anything. Having farts is a good thing, as I mentioned above. AND, make sure you are burping her during or after feedings.
And yes, a baby will wake sometimes when they fart... at this young age... lots of things wake them... and having farts can startle them. Newborns have a natural inborn "startle reflex"... and this is good... it means they are developing normally. The "startle reflex" will in time, be outgrown.
Your baby is so young and just a newborn... having farts is normal.
I suggest the book: "What To Expect The First Year" which you can find at any bookstore or online.
All the best,
Susan
I see alot of Moms mentioned Milicon drops! They were a miracle relief for our little one 12 years ago! Helped the tummy aches, gas and colic that she suffered from time to time. I always include a bottle of these drops with any baby shower gift that I buy for new Moms because they worked so great for us! Good luck and enjoy your new little one.
There is an all natural product that is sold on-line called Colic Calm. Although it was originally intended for infants with colic it works for almost anything, including teething. It's primary ingredient is activated vegetable charcoal. The most recent web site that I was able to purchase it from is: www.confidentbeginnings.com
The big foods that cause the most gas and intestinal discomfort are:
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage
Corn (includes high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, dextrose)
Tomato
Dairy
sometimes wheat
sometimes soy
rarely chocolate
My kids did really well with opening a capsule of PB8 (an excellent probiotic) and dumping 1/4-1/2 in the mouth and then breastfeeding them. If you tend to eat sugar, dairy, grapes, alohol, you might want to consider taking PB8 as well to balance out your intestinal flora, since it obviously has something to do with your breastmilk and the way she processes it. Good for you for breatfeeding! Feel free to cotnact me offlist with any other questions or recommendations, if for some reason, this does not work.
My son had horrible gas as a young baby - he would cry for hours. You can try lying him on his back and gently pumping his legs like he is riding a bicycle. This may help to release a little gas when he already has it.
I eventually had to go on a restricted diet (I breastfed my son as well). I didn't eat any milk or cheese, chocolate, and the gas-producing vegetables (beans, peppers, cabbage, onions, even tomatoes). Then I eventually added them back in one by one to determine to what he was sensitive. It turned out that if I didn't drink milk or eat cheese or ice cream, my son didn't have gas.
Good luck!
Hi D.,
Here are a few things that might help your baby's gas:
1) put baby on your shoulder or sit baby on your lap sideways and massage up baby's back with your hand (this gets lots of burps out of my little one).
2)give her a warm bath and gently massage her belly
3)mylicon drops
I breastfeed 100% too and all three of these techniques have helped my daughter. Also, from what I've read, your food intake is rarely the cause for baby's gas unless your child has an allergy. (For example, if your baby is lactose intolerant and you're eating dairy, that could impact baby's gas.) The book BABY 411 has served me as a wonderful, easy to read reference guide. You might want to check it out. It's helped me immensely as a first time mom.
Hi D.,
You sound like a very concerned mom wanting to watch your diet and find a natural solution to your little girl's gas. My first question to you would be "How easy is your baby to burp?" More often than not, the gas bubbles is from swallowing air. If you can be very persistent in burping your baby this should help tremendously. Also, is your gas caused by particular foods? If so, you might want to avoid these foods until your baby is about 4 months old. If these suggestions do not work I would love to talk to you - I am a Registered Dietitian and Lactation Consultant. Gripe Water is all natural and will do the trick! Good luck.
For you baby, try mylicon. This does not get absorbed in their body, and is perfectly safe for infants. I never used gripe water, as our ped did not recommend it at this age.
Mylicon may not work but you should try at least. You already got some good advice on the food that you can cut in your diet to try out. That would be my second step.
Good luck. And congrats on the new baby!
I had the same problem, I stop to eat and drink cow milk products, (because it was a lactose problem and you can consume substitutes). And it was excelent.
: )
Peppermint tea for you and Mylicon for the baby - available at Walgreens/CVS/Target. Best of luck.
IT takes at least 6 months for a baby's digestive track to finish developing... farting, screaming because of gas, and all the rest is not uncommon. I tried taking everything I knew might cause gas out of my diet, but it made no difference. My son would scream from midnight until 5 am every night until around 6 months, when all of a sudden he seemed fine. It was hard on me and hard on him, but I went to all kinds of specialists and I found out it's normal. Good luck and welcome to life with a gassy baby.
Mylecon was a GODSEND! Anything that has "symethicone" as its active ingredient (like Mylecon) is perfectly safe. It doesn't go into her system at all, just passes through. I recommend it HIGHLY. :)
mylicon!!! It is the BEST!!!
the only thing that helped my son's gas was Hylands colic tablets..i tried everything ...and that's what worked for him..try also massaging her lower back and pumping her legs.
You might want to consider giving her Gripe Water. It is mostly made of ginger and soothes their tummies.
Mylicon saved me. I was a little fearful of giving anything but the breast to the baby but I could not find any side effects. I gave it before every meal(every 3 hours) for a few days then I moved to just nights.
My husband was allergic to milk/soy as a baby. I have cut out a lot of foods which sucked at first but after a week or so it was no big deal epspecially since my baby was happy.
-I am a new m to a 3.5 month old boy
That happened to my son. I had to cut out dairy- all of it. Keep in minf=d though, it really could be nothing. Their digestive systems are still immature so having gas is very normal. It's when the gas becomes very painful that it is a problem. You'll be able to tell if it's painful if she arches her back while you feed her or if she starts crying a lot more than normal. Hope this helps.
I would imagine passing gas is a good thing.
That said, Gripe Water is good stuff. I breastfed exclusively for 9 months but did give my daughter Gripe Water a couple of times in her earlier months when she seemed to be having stomach pain - it is safe and natural, and did seem to bring her relief.
