My parents and brothers (ages 17 and 13) are coming to visit us this summer. I have one little boy that will be about 12 months old when they come. We have only lived here for about a year and still don't know all of the fun things to do. We are trying to come up with a few fun things to do, see, visit, etc when they come. Any ideas of things that would be enjoyable for everyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi J.,
What a nice name you have! There are many fun thing to do here in the Sacto area. There is Sunsplash in Roseville that has everything from swimming to laser tag. Old Sacramento has a great RailRoad Museum and many interesting shops for adults and teens. There is also the Zoo in Land Park (South Sacto), and the Malls are always a great place form teens. Folsom Lake and Folsom Prison (I know that may sound wierd, but it is very interesting). Hope this helps!

For sure go to Coloma...it's a cute little town and shows where gold was first discovered, a blacksmith and you can even pan for gold. Bring a picnic lunch and some outdoor games because there is a nice big lawn area and picnic tables.

Sly Park rec area in Pollock Pines has a small lake, which would be fun to play around in and bring a picnic lunch.

There are a ton of wineries in El Dorado and Amador counties. Boeger is in Apple Hill/Camino and easy to reach from the highway. Wine tasting isn't exactly conducive to 17 and 13 year olds, but Boeger has a nice area for a picnic or just bring some cheese and crackers and then eat a meal at the Apple Cafe on the way out.

Tahoe is a little bit of a schlep, but totally doable for a day trip - if your 10 month old could handle it. You could take the tram at Heavenly (and the views really are heavenly), go see the lake and there are a ton of places to eat.

Take in a River Cats game - those are very family-friendly and so fun!

There are a ton of museums downtown and I'm pretty sure there is one inside the Capitol. Or the railroad museum or Sutter's Fort.

If you want a nice dinner go to Michelangelo's on I Street in Sacramento. You'll want to go back every week!

Old Town Sac is pretty fun too. We always make sure to stop at the salt water taffy place and go crazy.

Enjoy your visit!

Natoma and Folsom Lakes, Sacramento and American Rivers would be a great spot to just have fun in the sun, bring a picnic lunch...

If your family is a singing family, there is family karaoke at Pizza Hut (or Straw Hat PIzza?) on Mather and Folsom in Rancho. Also Mark & Monica's in Granite Bay is Family Friendly until a certain hour.

www.seeaplay.com can show you what shows are playing in the area.

Also take a look at the different Chamber of Commerces in the area, they may be able to tell you more!

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo is really great for the whole family. There is a great blend of rides and animal exhibits and shows. You can do some thing together, then the big kids can ride roller coasters and the little one can go ride Thomas and the other kiddie rides. You can usually get cheaper tickets through McDonalds, etc., so keep your eye out.

The Gold Country is fun. Try Coloma. There are hiking trails as well as the Historical aspect. Old Sac. is fun. It kind of depends what kinds of things your brothers like to do.

Try FairyTale Town in Land Park. It's great for all ages. This summer they also have puppet shows that are darling, and the have some live animals too. It's a blast! Then head to Vic's or Burr's...both old fashioned ice cream counters. Nothing fancy, but really cute and easy and fun!

The Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town are fun places. Old Sacramento is a nice place too. They have a train museum that could be interesting. Marine World would be fun. It is not too far away. Or a visit to Alcatraz, just buy your tickets ahead of time. Catch a baseball game too. There is a waterslide park in Roseville that the boys would like. Or go rollerskating. I hope you have a great visit!

Whenever my family comes into town we go to a museum in Old Sacramento (the train museum is my favorite) and take a picnic lunch to eat next to the river, then walk around Old Sac for a while. The teenage boys would love Sunsplash in Roseville. If you are interested in history, you could go see the gold discovery site in Coloma.
