Front Load or Top Load Washer?

We have a top load Maytag Atlantis washing machine that I know is going to need replacing in a year or two (agitator problems.) I was wondering what brands/models and types (front or top load) of machines you have had good experience with?

What can I do next?

The money part of buying an appliance always sucks, but How exciting! I love getting a new machine! I would definitely go Front load. It's nicer on my clothes and I think it gets stuff cleaner, but you have to buy the High efficiency detergent or suds will build up and keep it from running. I have a Whirlpool Duet Front load since I moved to Shreveport. I bought it because it was supposed to be the best front load blah blah and came highly recommended. I like it, but I don't like it as much as my Kenmore Front load that I had in New Orleans. I've also heard very good things about LG, but not from anyone that I know well and could call for you. Good luck and have FUN looking and buying! Don't let it stress you out.

Don't know if this helps but what little I can add...

My mom has a front loader and she likes it because it uses less water but she says it doesn't hold as large a load as her old toploader (which I could see when I visited and had to use it - we have a toploader).

We just got the LG front-loader and I absolutely love it! It also received top ratings from Consumer Reports (if you aren't familiar with them, they do unbiased testing on products and are highly reputable). I also love how little water it uses (trying to be as "green" as possible!) and how clean the clothes are. It even gets the unnoticed stains my 3 y.o. sneaks in the dirty clothes out! It also uses a lot less detergent which also saves $. I recommend getting the dryer too (it dries clothes so fast!). Check out http://www.consumerreports.org/ for more info!

I had a front load washer. Had it for a whole 8 months. It did very well for about the first 6 months, and then it just went crazy. It wouldn't spin all the water out. I even tried washing just 5 pieces of toddler clothing, and it still wouldn't work right. Thank heavens it was under warranty and I got it exchanged for the Maytag Bravos, I love it. Seems to wash clothes so much better. -

We have had a front load washer for almost 2 years and I really like it. Because there is no agitator, it can fit large items or over-sized loads. Also, they use only 15 gal. of water per load compared to the 40 gal. most top loaders use so you save money on your water bill. They spin things so dry that clothes take less time in the dryer. Mine is a Frigidaire which costs less than some of the other brands and so far we've been happy with it.

My parents just had to replace their washer (they had it for many, many years). My Dad is really cheap and thought my Mom was crazy when she suggested they get a front loading machine. He got a deal on one though (he used to work at Sears, and gets a good retirement discount there), and they LOVE it! It uses so much less water, and is so much easier on your clothes, it actually ends up paying for itself (well the difference) in no time. And, that's coming from my Dad ... did I mention he is cheap? ;)

We buy almost all Kenmore appliances (from Sears obviously), and have had great luck with their brand. Their appliances seem to have little to no problems, and last for a long time. When our washer dies (hopefully no time soon ... we've had it for almost 8 years), I plan on replacing it with a front-loading machine. Good luck finding exactly what you want!

Our washer and dryer died at the same time a couple years ago and our friend suggest Fisher&Paykel. I had never heard of it, but my husband did some research online and we love our washer and dryer, both the same brand. They were affordable and I liked that there is not much of a selection with this brand. I think there were maybe two options. Kind of made me feel they make one thing and they make it really well. I believe both pieces are energy and savers and the washer is also a water saver.

We Love out front loaders. We have the GE version, but I know others that are equally as happy as with Maytag and kenmores models. They all have different features so they are worth checking out. What I like is the flexibility in cleaning cycles, water temps and the auto sensing feature on the dryer. I haven't noticed a difference in water usage or enegry b/c we bought them before we moved into this house. I have found I use less detergent. The only cons I have, and this just may be with the GE model is you have to, or you should keep the washer door open to let it air out when you are not using it. The seal is air tight obviously so as not to let water out. If you do not then the washer starts to smell and I have to run vinegar thru it. Not a big deal, just thought I would point it out.

Hi - we have an LG front load washer that I LOVE! It has so many options that are great. It has a sanitary cycle (I use this for sheets, towels, dirty baby clothes, etc). It kills 99.9% of germs. It also has a speed wash cycle, optional added steam to remove stains, and a plain steam cycle that lasts approx 20 minutes and replaces ironing (just place your clean, wrinkly clothes in the steam cycle while you're getting ready, and voila - 20 minutes later, you have wrinkle free clothes). This steam cycle is my absolute favorite and I couldn't live without it. I have a very nice, expensive iron, and it is collecting cobwebs! The washer also has a super huge capacity and I can do 2-3 normal loads at once.

I have the Maytag Neptune washer and dryer purchased in 2004. i have been disappointed in them. Everything comes out of the washer entangled and the dryer does not remove the wrinkles. I spend a fortune now on ironing.

Maytag has always been my favorite.
As far a front load or top load, depends on your preference, I still prefer the traditional top load. But they now have a top load that is built different from the traditional, that is the one I'll be replacing mine with when it goes.

I have a family of 6! Three boys into sports and a daughter that has a fashion show every morning getting ready for school. Thus, I have lots of clothes to wash. I bought Whirpool's front load washer and dryer and would highly recommend the set. I bought he pedestals for storage and heigth for ease on my back. The trick to front loaders is what they sit on. If your laundry room has a concrete slab or a reinforced floor these are ideal. However, if your laundry room doesn't, the front loaders will walk all over the place. The now have top loaders that are as efficient and will do as many clothes as the front loaders and aren't as likely to walk all over the room. On the plus side let me mention I am now using a third of the water, and a third of the laundry products that I once was. And there has been a reduction in my power bill. Hope this helps. Good luck!

My parents have a front load washer and dryer. It works really well, but my dad has been having trouble with the drain or filter I think clogging up. If a quarter or something finds its way into the washer it clogs something in the drain system or the filter I think, and you can't just open it up and get the quarter out he had to replace some part.

My husbands family has owned an appliance repair shop for over 30 years. The traditional washers last longer and are easier and cheaper to fix. Whirpool is the best brand as far as reliability.

I have a frigidaire front loader, and I LOVE IT!!!!! The only downside is i have a limited selection of laundry detergent I can use - the front loader requires "he" detergent. other than that I love my new washer. I can get all my laundry done in 5 hours as opposed to all weekend long!! (We have 3 kids - 17 girl, 16 boy, and 11 girl) and one on the way - I have about 8 loads of laundry a week to do.
