Frequent BM

My daughter is 2 days from her 6 month mark. For 3 1/2 days she's had frequent BMs. Usually she goes 2 times a day, max 3. But she's been going almost every time she has a bottle. The only time she doesn't seem to poop is when she's sleeping. We took her to the doctor and he felt she caught a little bug and that it's probably not anything to worry about. She's now gotten bad diaper rash because of the frequent wiping. She' been on this formula for about 1 1/2 months (she transitioned from all breastmilk). Anybody have similar experiences? Did you change formula? We are using Enfamil Gentlease.

many great suggestions already. Also, is she is having a tummy bug, there is usu. elevated yeast in the bowel and it causes a bad rash. My daughter had this when she was 2 yrs old. Even w/ only using soft towels and water (no wipes). It only got worse. Went to the Dr. and she told me to go to the store and buy Lotrimin or Gynelotrimin and use it. It was all she needed. I believe I even used her extra heavy-duty rash cream on top of it so it wouldn't wipe away as easily. Ralph's has a great diaper rash cream w/ higher % of zinc oxide. (I believe that is the active ingredient). I think it is the Kroger brand. Aquaphor is great too.

Hope this helps!

how many BM is she having in a 24hr period? make sure you are documenting all her BM (color, shape, time of BM, time of last feeding etc). you can request to see a GI doctor to test her poop for blood.
my baby had a similar reaction and it sounds like your baby might have a food allergy. not sure what type of formula base you are using- she might be allergic to either soy or dairy... or both. try using differnt formulas.

Is she teething? My daughter had terrible BMs that left her bottom almost burnt. She would have full diapers every time we changed her. After the tooth came in, her system returned to normal.

Could she be teething? Strange things happen when those teeth are wanting to push thru. For the diaper rash, during her naps take her diaper off and put a towel underneath her so she can air out. And stop using wipes to wipe her, use a warm wash cloth and dab her skin. The worst diaper rash my daughter ever got was when she started teething.

Good luck!

If the doctor said it's a bug make sure you follow-up with an appointment! I'm hardcore about making sure I take full advantage of the Pedi's knowledge when things like this came up.

I wouldn't change your formula just yet, because if it is a bug it will go away. I too used Enfamil but I used LactoFree because it was gentle on my son's tummy and he had lactose issues since we started him at around 6 months.

For the diaper rash, find a gentle product for her bum I used Aveeno products and made sure to change my son's diaper frequently. Powder with cornstarch was a lifesaver!!

But, remember if you are concerned in any way about a health or diet question its usually best to get a doctor's opinion, even if that means a second opinion!

she'll get over it, no worries. unsolicited advice - this is a good time to start potty training - you know she'll poop right after the bottle - sit her on the potty. this is how my child was potty trained. when it was time for pre-school they could not belive that 2 y.o. does not need diaper;0
Good Luck

Follow Dr advise concering formula. This sounds wierd, but the best product I ever used for diaper rash is Bag Balm (square green tin).

Aquaphor or Domboro are good for bad diaper rash.

Is your daughter eating food yet? Maybe start on some rice cereal and bananas. That will firm things up.

My daughter is a little over six months and continues to have two to three dirty diapers, sometimes even four, a day. I don't know about the formula question, but I highly recommend Aquaphor on dry skin for diaper rash.

not sure about the BM, but for the diaper rash, use a good diaper cream to get rid of it, such as Weleda (can buy at Whole Foods and does not have toxins). i am not a fan of aquaphor or desetin, etc.

Make sure you change diaper FREQUENTLY - and whenever you can, leave diaper off or put her in a cloth training/underwear.
Don't use wipes - use washcloth with plain old water, no chemicals. Best if you can rinse her off in sink or tub after each change, as this will freshen her up and avoid the "wiping" which only irritates.

Last bit of advice....i use plain old cornstarch in my son's diaper for almost every change, adn he has only had a diper rash once (when we were on a long trip). he is eighteen months old.

All the other mothers have good advice. After I weaned all my children, I started them on soy formula because our family on both sides had cow milk digestive problems. After a few months on soy, my daughter developed the same symptoms until she had chronic diarrhea and lost 20% of her body weight at age 20 months. My mother-in-law found an article about goat's milk. It is easier to digest and almost every baby can tolerate it just fine. My daughter didn't like it at first but i mixed it half/half with formula and over a week just reduced the amount of formula until she was drinking straight goat's milk. It was like a miracle. The diarrhea stopped. She regained her weight and started to grow! She was very tiny to begin with. With my later two boys I just started them on goat's milk as soon as they started the same thing. I wished I could have nursed them longer, but I had medical problems, so I had to go to the bottle. All of my kids were raised on goat's milk until age five. As they got to be around age three, we tried yogurt and cheese with no problems. One son to this day still has problems with cow's milk and soy and he avoids them and is fine. One son and my daughter can tolerate some dairy with no problems, they just don't overdo it. If you go to goat's milk, you must supplement iron, but that can be done with the iron fortified cereals for babies. If your doctor doesn't understand the benefits of goat's milk, then find a baby nutritionist who does. For my family it was a miracle. My daughter just weaned her son at 15 months and moved him straight to goat's milk. It is now available in powdered form, which is so much more convenient than the cans. The fresh is probably best but it is very expensive. The powdered can be bought online by the case cheapest, but you can buy one can to test with at many markets now. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
