Well, I am sooo confused. With my first pregnancy I would get a lot of yeast infections and Monistat did not help so my doctor occasionally prescribed me the generic for Diflucan. I was the type who took nothing, not even a tylenol whil pregnant but my doc. acted as if it was no problem, and she was a well known doc. in Johnson County, KS. Well I had no problems w/it. Well this pregnancy I recently had a yeast infection again that monistat did not help, and they prescribed it to me again, a different doc. This Doc. was also voted one of Kansas City's best Doctor's. But I looked it up and now I do not know if I should take it. Has anyone else taken this or had bad affects? Thanks

What can I do next?

If you want to go the natural route- try inserting a clove of garlic as high as you can vaginally- leave in overnight- then remove- repeat nightly for a week. Try not to nick the garlic, as that can release more juice which will irritate the vaginal walls. I have also used boric acid in capsules- you buy the boric acid powder at the pharmacy- and use the empty gelatin capsules- again, insert one nightly, and I would wear a pad as this really increases secretions. And BTW, boric acid is what they use as the neutral ingredient in eye drops- so , no , it won't burn or harm you or the baby in anyway. Dr. Mercola- mercola.com- recommends this treatment- After having 9 kids, and the yeast that comes with it, these are my tried and true remedies- I haven't use the prescription stuff in years- Good luck, S.

Talk with your pharmacist about this..I am just positive that I have seen lots of pregnant women come into the pharmacy with scripts for Dlflucan. ( I work in a pharmacy as a clerk). Ask your pharmacist about side effects, if it crosses over to the fetus...etc. They will have all of the information for you.

I was the same way when pregnant I never took tylenol or any kind of medicine. I had an all natural child birth no drugs and I am currently breast feeding my 12 month old and still not taking any kinds of meds. BUT I tried everything when I was pregnant to get rid of a yeast infections and nothing worked so I did use Diflucan and I did not have any problems. If you don't get rid of it there is a chance your baby can be born with a yeast infection. Congrats and good luck!

Well it depends upon what the ingredients are. There are certain yeast treatments that are different then others. They have different medications. The one I would stay away from the most is the Diflucan which can cause liver damage and jaundice. Try going to the health store and buying a good probiotic. Take lots of garlic.

I had CONSTANT yeast infections through my second pregnancy and took Diflucan as prescribed by my midwife, and I know of others who did too. If you're concerned about it talk with your pharmacist. Find out what drug class it's in for pregnancy. I have a feeling if it weren't safe my midwife (all natural all the time!) wouldn't have prescribed it! And it worked!!

Diflucan is pregnancy Category C - that either means the studies haven't been conducted, or the company hasn't submitted the data to the FDA for approval.

A lot of medications are used off-label (in ways the FDA has not approved) during pregnancy based upon physician discretion.

The advice to speak with both your doctor and pharmacist are very good ones. You can ask why the MD has prescribed the medication despite the pregnancy category rating and find out from the pharmacist what it means and what other data is available.

At the end of the day, you're the one carrying that child. Do what you think is best.
