Flu shots can cause flu-type illness, so getting the shot before the surgery increases the chance of getting an illness, and since the surgery is for tonsils and adenoids it suggests your child's immune system is already compromised, meaning he's most vulnerable to adverse effects of vaccines. both my kids always get regular flu shots. we do it anytime of day and the only side effect my son had was a red rashy spot on his leg. other than that none. they will give you a paper with a list of side effects.

you can also find "green" flu shots if your consirned about the preservitaves in them.

Why get a flu shot? Just because your doctor doesn't want to reschedule the surgery? Feed him healthy and take precautions. If you have never had a flu shot, why put your son and you at risk? My son has diabetes and they always recommend him getting a flu shot, but he eats healthy and rarely gets sick. Why put something foreign in your body? Just one mom's opinion.

All the reason NOT to vaccinate! There will be so much toxic overload to your child's system between the drugs before, during and after surgery, that you don't need to pollute it before the surgery. You can get him on fish oil, probiotics and vitamin C now so he can detoxify all those things when the time comes. Plus, if he did get sick before the surgery....just reschedule.

I'd give tylenol for the arm pain. That should be about it. Stick around in the place you get the shot for 15 minutes to make sure you don't get light-headed.

Soreness and tenderness at the injection site are the most common side effects. I had my flu shot a few weeks ago, no side effects at all. My 4 year-old had the FluMist vaccine on Monday, and my 7 month old had his flu booster the same day. Neither had any side effects. If this is the first flu shot for your 3YO then I think you have to do a booster after 4 weeks.

Also, my ped mentioned that there is a better immune response when we don't give tylenol or advil, so she recommends not doing so unless the child is really miserable. Just FYI.

I have never had significant side effects other than my arm being sore for a day, two at most. I can't remember, is the Flu Mist available for children that age? That could be an option for you and or your son too.

Good job though. Always better to be protected and like Jackie mentioned consider the shot that doesn't have the preservative if you are concerned about it (Primithersol or something like that???).

I brought my 3 year old last month and she didn't have any reaction this year. Last year she ran a little temp around 99 F. (The formla changes every year depending on the strains going around)
I didn't have any reaction either and I usually get what I call a very mild flu for a day - achy, a few sneezes, etc.
The site of the injection was a little sore, but not too bad either.

Oh we did injection for the vaccine. I don't do the inhaled vaccination because I have asthma & we're waiting to see if my daughter has it. Next year she'll get the inhaled one since it seems she does not have asthma.

I generally get a bit achy the day after the shot. Just a sign that my immune system is cranking up, I suppose. Nothing really bad, just..achy (no fever or anything). Lots of fluids, a little tylenol, and a good night's sleep, and I'm okay. Neither of the kids (or DH) gets a reaction from the flu shot, though my five-year old got the mist last year, and had a stuffy nose for a couple of days (she has bad allergies, though, and it was the height of Cedar Season, so that may have been coincidental).

I just got my first flu shot EVER on Tuesday. I did not get sore or achy or anything. My husband and kids got their flu shot last week, my husband ended up getting sick. Just sick to his stomach, and was thinking for 2 days he was gonna throw up, but nothing. He also had muscle fatigue. Then it just went away after 2 days. My kids did not have any effects. I don't think it matters what time of day you get it.

I get the Flu shot every year.
My kids get it every year as well.
My kids, get the Nasal mist.
My kids are now 5 and 9 years old.

NONE of us, has ever gotten, side effects from it. Ever.
I also have Asthma. I have never gotten side effects from the shot.

I always get my kids to the Doc in the morning appointments. For me that is just more convenient.

First of all, I would reconsider getting your son's tonsils and adenoids surgery. These are a very important part of immune building. They filter out lots of bad things.
If your son is getting sick and therefore your dr suggests the removal, change his diet and build up his immune system. Surgery is surgery, is major and it's serious and dangerous. Removing body parts is big $$$. Drs like to remove rather than figure out the problem. My mom had a friend at the gym who got the flu vaccine, the next day he was paralyzed, 2 years later, he was dead.

I always get the flu shot myself, as I am an elementary school teacher. My children, 6 & 3 have gotten theirs each year as well. So far we have been very lucky to have avoided the flu. My children were getting the shot until old enough to get the mist. It was recommended as being more effective if they are in school/daycare and there is not shot. I usually just give tylenol about 20 minutes before the shot because I have experienced just a little tenderness at the sight and am assuming my children do as well.
Lot's of people will tell you how bad it is, that they have gotten sick from it, etc. As with EVERYTHING people are different. You have to make the ultimate decision for your family.
From the stand point of having surgery soon - you really do want to keep your son healthy, not so the doctor is inconvenienced to reschedule but so your son doesn't have to wait ant longer than necessary. My 3 year old had adenoids and tubes 3 weeks ago and the result is NIGHT & DAY!!! I feel bad for her that we waited but it's not as if a parent wants to go looking for surgery!!!! I would recommend the shot, but just my opinion.

**About your surgery - since your son is 3 - you night want to see if your hospital has a CHILD LIFE dept. These are individuals trained in child development and specialize in age appropriate explanations for medical procedures. Things like letting them touch the mask used for anesthesia and showing them that an IV is like a straw in your hand - there is no needle that stays. They can also allow him to play with things like the surgical hats and such that can alleviate some fears for him.
ALSO, in my experience (I was a child life specialist) - AS SOON AS the nurses allow your son to start drinking, DO IT! Even if it means waking him up! He will still be under anesthesia effects for a while and it will not hurt him to drink then. It's like a sore throat - it hurts like heck to drink at first but the more you drink and swallow, the better it will feel. You want him to start drinking while it doesn't hurt since explaining this to a 3 year old isn't going to be easy. When I worked in the hospital (it's been about 10 years) - the young kids needed to show they were drinking fluids before they could go home. Those who did, went home faster. Those who didn't ended up staying in the hospital for sometimes up to a week!!!!
Not trying to scare you - any procedure for our babies can be scary. I'm sure you have a good doctor and this is actually a routine surgery. It just can be a little hard to prepare for and no one will tell you things that can help. I wish that doctors did offer child life - it really can make a difference. My husband says they should offer it for adults! I hope all goes smoothly and that your son has the positive results we did after my daughters surgery. She sleeps SO MUCH better now! Who knew ? Ok, we just did the flu mist and although there is not supposed to be side effects from it, for the first time (my kids are 5 & 8) both my kids got some strange rash my son was worse it was everywhere feet, arms, back, legs even face. His temp went from 105.1 to 94.4 in a period of 12 hrs. And his stomach hurt. My daughter got the same things just to a lesser degree. They got their mists a week apart an both did not get sick until the same amount of time afterward. We did blood work on out son with gave us no results for anything. Now neither myself or my husban got anything. I feel this was directly related to the mist and will never get it again.
