Hi Moms - we've had our house on the market and, of course, had cut flowers in a few places. It really made me happy to see them, but I don't like the ongoing expense or the cutting idea. I'd like to keep a flowering plant instead, but I have NO idea what would be good for indoors, indirect lighting, and that would survive a non-gardener type like myself.
Any ideas on a flowering plant that will keep on ticking for a while?

Hi Duska - black thumb is opposite of green thumb because people like myself, despite our best intentions, regardless of how much we want them to live, our plants die and turn black. Or in the case of the cactus I killed by overwatering, they explode. Sorry for the confusion.
Since your house is on the market I would suggest getting nice fake plants. If a potential buyer comes in and sees a dying plant they will assume that there are things not fixed in the home. I know this sounds strange but your realtor will probably tell you the same thing.
Peace Lillies are pretty hardy and can make it on minimal light. As they mature, they can spread out and have really nice broad deep green leaves so they look good all year round. They also flower a couple of times a year and look something like a Calla Lily.
I had one Calla Lily for about 15 years before it died after moving to a new home in the winter. It died of cold shock I think. It got really huge ...it was in a 20 inch planter in my living room in indirect light and flourished happily...even if I forgot to water it!
I also had a palm tree that was even older. It belonged to a friend who had it for 15 years before I got it, and I had it another 10 years before it died. I think it finally died of old age. We both kept it indoors so I think that cut down on diseases. I would only need to water it about once or twice a month and it looked great! While it didn't need full on sunlight, it needed to be in a window that got at least indirect sun.
Fake orchids are impossible to tell without touching them. Just keep them dusted!!!

I agree with fake plants. When we sold our first home, our realtor used a stager. She came in with a fake plant and I was horrified, but she assured me it was fine... and I actually still have it in my new living room :)
She shopped at Home Goods and found a fake orchid and it fools people all the time.

BUT I have had success with a manavilla (sp?) They are beautiful vining, flowering plants that bloom all summer. I have kept them on my porch, but you might pull O. off inside if there's decent light.
Is the term "black thumb" a racist remark? If it is I would appreciate you not using it. If it isn't, pardon my misinterpretation of the word.
