Ok, I have been reading everywhere that the first dental visit should happen by the child's first birthday or whenever the get their first tooth. The ADA recommends this as does American Academy of Pediatric Dentristry. However, every single pediatric dentist I call, even the ones referred by the above organizations don't see children till they are 3 years old. I have a daughter who's close to 2. At what age have you all taken your children for their first dental visit?

If you know of a good pediatric dentist that will see the under 3 set in the Aurora/Naperville area, please share the name.

What can I do next?

Hello - I have a 4 and 3 year old and am here to say that I don't know what your reading, but your child does not have to go to the dentist until age 3. In fact can you imagine trying to get your child to sit in a dental chair at age 1! I think that what your reading is trying to emphasis introducing a dental routine to your child at about age one, give them a toothbrush and get the habit down. Unless you notice a problem with your childs teeth, wait until 3.

Hi,
My daughter saw the dentist when she was 3. I was told by him and my son's previous dentist that unless there is a problem, 2 1/2 or 3 is the right age. If your daughter's teeth are in good shape, I don't think it hurts to wait until they are 3.
Hope that helps a little.
L.

Every dentist I tried for my daughter told me 3 also. My daughter got her teeth really early, about 4-5 months so I was worried she needed to go to the dentist. But no one took her that young, so I ended up going soon as she turned 3 and everything was fine. She will now be 4 next month and her teeth are healthy. Of course the thing I did was make sure I brushed them daily. Plus my daugter was never on a bottle or fomula which also helped her teeth in the long run. But many dentist say before that age is to early because the child may not sit still.
Hope this advice helps.

Hi T. ~ I have a 15 month old daughter with a mouth full of teeth...lol! I discussed the dental issue with my pediatrician (because I had read the same stuff that you did) and he said that there is no need to take her to the dentist at this age - he recommended cleaning her teeth nightly with a damp washcloth, and then seeing a dentist around age 3. So that's what we do. I called my own dentist to check out his age limit and his staff indicated that 3 years of age is the youngest he will see. I guess all the parenting books and mags might be jumping the gun a bit! HTH!
