Our pediatrician recommended the ThumbGuard/FingerGuard http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId... for our son. We still have not tried it due to the cost, but like you, we have tried almost everything and nothing seems to curb this bad habit.

Here is more on the product by the company who created the contraption:

I'm going to purchase that book Stacie recommended below before using the $70 guard. :)

I highly recommend a short book called "How to Stop Thumbsucking" by Pam Marshalla. She's a well-respected speech-language pathologist. Finger sucking is treated much the same way as thumb sucking. This book will give you plenty of ideas to get the habit kicked in no time. Go to www.pammarshalla.com to order. It's only about $15, if I remember correctly. Best of luck!

My son had the same habit. So bad that he was pushing his front teeth forward. We finally went to a dentist who made a retainer that fit behind the teeth so that the thumb/fingers could not touch the teeth. The mouth is still pliable at that age (our son was five) so the teeth were able to "fall back into place" with time. The receptacle is also a discomfort in trying to suck so the habit was broken. We tried all kinds of ways to break the sucking from talking, the old pepper on the fingers to slapping the hands, etc....nothing worked until the retainer was in place. The retainer does not affect eating or drinking. Good luck!
