My son had is 12 month wellness check last Thurs the 6th. A week to 10 days prior he was sick with a flu bug and then a cold. The pediatrician still gave him his shots (MMR, booster)as he had little effects left of being sick.
Today 3-12 he spiked a 103.5 fever this afternoon. I called my pedi who sent me on a wild goose chase to urgent cares (one was closed besides the sign that said till 7pm, one didn't treat children under 2, the CVS minute clinic couldn't treat him b/c he had a fever...hmmmm). Sooooo I resorted back to good ole Motrin and Tylenol to maintain his fever and water/pedialyte to say hydrated.
Has anyone experienced a fever from vaccines almost a week later? I saw some info on the net about this happening. Or is it more likely he is just sick again?
I am planning on taking him to the dr tomorrow and continuing to give him medicine tonight for fever reducer.

Thanks to all the responses...as of this morning he is at 99, eating, sleeping, playing, smiling, laughing...and just being him. I am still giving him fever reducer just to be proactive...but he either had a quick bug or really a reaction to the shot a week ago. I am on the hunt for a new pediatrician though.

It is very possible that this is a result of the vaccine, especially since his immune system was challenged by the flu at the time of the vaccine. Children should never be vaccinated when they are sick. For more information about vaccines, you can go to 909shot.com so you can vaccinate safely, if you choose to vaccinate at all.

The same thing just happened to a friend of mine... her 12 month daughter got a fever one week after MMR plus some spots.
Haven't had that experience, though I'm waiting to have my son get his MMR shot...and I might have them break it up because its three vaccines in one shot. I'd just keep a close eye on him. I just am kinda weary of vaccines these days. Sounds like what you're doing, as far as the Children's Tylenol, is great though. Keeping him hydrated and being close to him :-)
The same thing just happened to us!! My daughter actually got a rash along with the fever, which after much research on my own I've figured must be from the MMR! It was the only vaccine she hadn't had before. I've had my daughter at the doctor 7 times in the last 2 weeks and they can't do anything to help her except treat the symptoms, just like you already are.
Now, both her and her brother have a bad cold, but that's unrelated to the vaccine issue.

Sounds like it's just residual illness from being ill pryor to his vaccination.I know sometimes when you get vaccines there is a potential for some minor effects,such as low grade fever or aches. When it concerns your first child there's always a bit of a panic as far as care and being a good mom.My daughter had a fever that high when she was like 3 mnths. and the medical folks weren't as concerned as I was(I was a wreck)It irritated me,but I was assured babies are tougher than we think.I followed the course of tylenol followed by motrin at the correct times, and the fever broke.You should always go by your gut feeling,and never feel as though your neurotic. I don't think I would give the pedialyte though.As long as your child is drinking regularly there should be no concerns for dehydration, I had the same concerns and wanted to resort to the pedialyte and was told not to. I believe unless there is diarhea to the max it's not needed.

I'm about to start vaccinations with my third child and wanted to feel a little more informed. I bought "The Vaccination Book" by Robert Sears. I thought it was really well put together. It offered a lot of information about each shot, how it's made, what all the ingredients are and possible side effects.
I learned in my reading that anything that happens to you child for a month after a vaccination can be reported as a side effect. I would definitely report the reaction as suggested by other responses.

There are so many nasty bugs going around right now that I would think he picked up one. He may have even caught something at the dr's office that has a longer incubation period. My kids only ever got fevers after the 12 month round of shots but it was only for 24 hours or less. But every child is different. As long as he's responding to the motrin/tylenol and you are keeping him hydrated I would think you doing great. Hope he gets better soon.
That fever is not from vaccines. Too high!
I am a mother of 3 and have not expirenced fever that long after the shots. I would take him to the doctor today as you planned. They will probably tell you to give him "good ol Motrin and Tylenol" and that its not uncommon to see this. But you would rather error on the side of caution.
Yes, depending on the shot it is common to run a fever almost 2 weeks after shots, however, i hvae never had my kids run a fever that high after shots.
Hmm. Interesting. My daughter just got her 15m shots on 3/1 and developed a fever on 3/11 of 102. This morning 3/12 it was as high as 103.5. They could be related. However, we just started trying for a second time to transition her to regular milk, and she's had 2 new foods in the last few days. So it could be a reaction to that. My son used to get really high, unexplained fevers and it turned out that he had a food allergy.
My daugther spiked a fever one week post mmr, so it is possible. Hydration is most important. I couldn't get her to drink pedialyte, but she'd suck it out of a syringe like it was medicine.
not a week later, You might want to ck with your doctor. There might be something else going on.
I saw your post & just had to respond. My son (who is now 17) also went through the same thing after his 12 month WBC. He was suffering from an ear infection & cold when he was given his MMR shot. Shortly after I noticed he was acting differently. A child who was once so out going, always smiling & a joy started acting moody, talking less & wouldn't make eye contact with me. Since I was a first time mom & in a foreign country (Germany) I didn't know where to turn. It wasn't until we returned stateside that a friend of mine commented on his strange behavior. She suggested I take him to a developmental pediatrician. He was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder just after his 2nd birthday. I pray that you have a strong support system & my advice would be to watch your son closely over the next few weeks & if you notice any behavioral changes make your voice heard. my daughter had her 12 month check up today and the dr said that there could be a reaction to the vaccinatinos up tp 14 days
similar thing happened to my son when he got his 12 month vaccinnes. it was closer to 10 days later so i was surprised the fever was from the vaccines, but that was the case. no other side effects and the fever was gone a couple days later.

EXACT same thing happened to my now-near 3 year old little girl. She was sick for a little over a week with a fever and generally not feeling well (a week later) and she even developed a rash. It was definitely from the MMR.

I strongly believe that reactions to vaccines are underreported and should be given more attention.

If your child received the MMR vaccines than yes, often with this vaccine the side effects are observed 10 days later- cant believe the Pediatrician didnt pick up on this
Hey, L.! My son is 19 months-old, and when he had his 12 month flu shot, he got sick about a week later. He had high fevers, and sleepless nights for a while. My husband had his flu shot the same day as our son, and they both got sick at the same time. That is what lead me to believe it could have been from the vaccines. There is, of course, the possibility that his immune system has taken a beating from being sick, and then having shots. So, it's good that you're taking him to the doctor to make sure. Hi L.. Yes, it could be a reaction to the vaccine. But it is best to take the baby back to the Pediatrician and if you have no luck with the explanation, seek a second opinion. Good luck. D.

i am very surprised that your dr. gave him those shots while he was sick. that made no sense at all. they do have a reaction afterwards and being sick, he didn't need that. next time cancel the appt. and wait till he is well.
you are doing allt he right things, but this dr. makes me nervous. that is such a basic thing...not giving children shots while they are sick and he did. what was that about? i don't think he had your childs interests at hand. personally i would find another pediatrician. if he can't get the basics right what would he do when something serious happens. i question his judgment.
ask a nurse at a hospital who a great pediatrician is and transfer to there, even if it is further from your home. You are his protector.

as a nurse, i can tell you it could be just a local reaction from the vaccine and his immune system being weak when he got it. you did the right thing to treat it and you did the right thing by getting him vaccinated, so please continue to do that and protect him and everyone he will ever come into contact with!
Yes!! I only say this because of my own experience,over the past 4yrs. I just realized that my little girl, has had some kind of reaction to her vaccines since she was 2mo old. About 10-12 days after she would run a high fever of (103-106)for about 3-5days with no other source. I did not put this together until recently, she had a severe flu shot reaction in Nov 2006 causing 4 days in ICU, 6 spinal taps, fluid on the brain, eye surgery,permanet vision loss etc.. Thankfully we are some one of the lucky vaccine injured family. She is doing good now, (but still undergoing treatment) I have done extensive treatment on this issue and the CDC just came out with saying the MMR and the chicken pox vaccine can cause seizures "but not life threatning" which we all know can be caused by high fevers, let me know if you would like more info-- I am not against the vaccines, I just think all children can handle them when they are so young. And I was never aware of the sever things that could happen until it did.
L....my daughter is almost two ...and last may after she got her vaccines also the MMR a week later the night of her birthday party she had a fever of 103 and it went up to 105...she ended up having a feberal seizure and the ambulance came and took us to the emergency room. My pediatriiton said it was most likely the shot MMR so on her 18 month check up they didn't give it to her and said they would wait till she was a little older. It was the scariest thing I have ever been through. I just laid down with her because her fever spiked up so quickly and then 1 minute later she had the seizure. I thought she was dead when I carried her out of our room. Luckily my step Mom is a nurse a new what to do. Don't get that shot till he is a little older if you can wait. Hope that helps. When we got to the hospital she was almost back to her normal self and has been fine since.

L., please report this and keep careful track of his reactions. most of the time vaccinations don't have long-lasting ill effects, but the adverse and occasionally severe long-term problems are consistently under-reported and downplayed by the medical community.

MMR is a rough vaccine, and yes it is normal for a fever, rash, vomiting to occur. It will happen several days AFTER the vaccine. There is a delayed reaction.
