its probably a virus. it could be the early stages of hand foot and mouth disease and the spots havent shown up yet. How high is high?

A fever is often the first sign of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, followed by a sore throat and sometimes a poor appetite and malaise. One or two days after the fever begins, painful sores may develop in the mouth or throat. A rash on the hands and feet and possibly on the buttocks can follow within one or two days.

Had the same thing here with my now 10yo son a little over a month ago. His fever would spike to 103.+ and we could get it to come down with Tylenol, cool patches, baths, ect. But it always spiked up high once the Tylenol wore off. its just a nasty virus that seems to be going around. Odd thing is that my other two kids, nor anyone else in the house came down with it.

His fever continued and he had started with this odd croupy cough when we took him back to the doctor (a second trip) 8days after the initial fever started the doctor diagnosed him with a sinus infection, which we think was secondary to the initial fever mainly because the fever by then was only 100 without anything.

But talking with other moms at his school, a number of kids had the high fevers (103/104) for 3 to 5 days in a row and then suddenly were all better again. Since she's been to the doctor already, I'd wait a couple more days and just ride it out. Make sure she gets plenty of fluids, offer soups and smoothies too to get some calories into her!

best wishes, sucks to have a sick kid.

My daughter just had the same thing - High Fever for no reason. The ER doctor said that if it does not break within 5 or 6 days to go back to the doctor. Luckily hers broke, but if it does not break for your little one by tomorrow afternoon, go back to the doctor! There seems to be a virus going around and the only symptom is a fever. I have been hearing alot of people exoeriencing this lately. Good Luck and I hope she feels better soon!

Our doc used to call this 'mystery virus', when there were no other symptoms. My oldest had this when travelling once, and the doc in England called it the same thing! It just needs to run its course. Keep her comfortable and hydrated until it passes. :)

Probably just a viral illness. As long as it goes down with Tempra and she is drinking she should be fine. Will probably break within the next 24 hours
or so. Some of these viruses are a PIA because there is nothing you can
do about it. Just keep her comfortable.

We've had that here too. First my 5 yr old had it for a week. I took him in and it was just a virus. Now my 2 yr old has it. I'm waiting longer to take him in because it's probably the same virus. We're normally healthy all summer, but this summer has been terrible. We've had stomach flu, ear infections, and now this freaky fever virus.

It is likely "just a virus" which you simply have to ride out. But pay CLOSE attention to other things as well...if you notice ANY other symptoms please get to the doctor and tell them. There are other diseases out there that are rare which are associated with high prolonged fevers, but have other symptoms also.

My daughter was just diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease, it started with 5 days of 104 fever....just be aware and trust your gut when the doc tells you something. Your mama instincts will tell you if its alright or not. Good luck and hope your little one feels better : - )

Hi L., I am so sorry your little one and you are going through this. How frustrating. SOme thoughts:
1. a virus.
2. the heat making the virus/fever worse.
3. try cool baths and cool compresses throughout the day....
4. Let her run around naked or with just a diaper/panty to keep cool....
5. juices.

My son had the same symptoms a couple months ago and turned out that he had pneumonia. I was told too that when a child had a high fever that won't go away with the symptoms he had it would either be a UTI or Pneunonia.

They gave him some antibiotics for 10 days and they worked.

Hope she is better soon!

My neice had 101-103 for 4 days and throat, ears everything was clear. Doc called it a virus and left it at that. It went away but took about 5 full days. Use your mommy sense. If your not comfortable get a second opinion. Good luck

My huband and I and our 2 kids have had it. I don't know what you mean by high. For us, it was 103 and around 100 with medicine. We were told to not worry about it unless it got to 104. It ended up being a viral infection. The lack of eating was due to lesions in the back of the throat.
It is day 7 and the fevers are gone but still no appetite.

My son had the same thing a couple months ago. (He just turned 3.) It lasted about 4 days and then he had a bit of a cough, but the cough came on later. He was fine. It was a bit mysterious though.
I believe it is important to keep the fever down. I know too high a fever can cause seizures. However, my sister shared with me that keeping the fever low can prolong an infection because it takes longer for the fever to burn it off. So, maybe that's why it's taking so long to go away. That would be, if in fact, the Dr. is wrong and missed something. Sounds like it just needs to run it's course. My Dr. said if a fever lasts longer than 3 days to bring the child in. Sounds like you are vigilant about that. We brought him in once though, a while back, and then he just said to wait 2 more days.
