My 1 year old daughter suddenly got a fever yesterday afternoon. It went up to 102.3, which is the highest it has ever been. She is cutting molars, but I wouldnt think it would get that high with teething! After a dose of tylenol, it completely went away. I was very happy she was better, but thought it was odd for her to have a fever with no other symptoms and then it just mysteriously went away? Anyone else had a sudden onset of fever arise for no known reason and then just disappear? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hello! I don;t think it is anything to worry about. My oldest son also had Roseola when he was a little tyke and he had a high fever and then, like the other lady said, he developed a rash on his torso and cheeks and that was all. He was just a little cranky. Dont fret unless it happens more!

My kids all ran fevers when cutting teeth even though the doctors say they won't. I think that's so you don't assume it's teething when it is really something else. My oldest son also ran high fevers for absolutely no reason. I would take him to the Dr and that would be his only symptom. They never found anything wrong with him and then it would go away. I guess he outgrew that around age 2.

It could just be a virus. Sometimes they get little viruses that cause high fever, especially in children. It's probably nothing major. Teething could be an explanation but who knows sometimes. If the fever gets over 103 and you can't get it down you should seek medical attention.

I have 4 children and my firstborn went through about 4 months one winter/spring with sudden onset fevers with no other symptoms and the doctor couldn't explain it. A friend suggested seasonal allergies (even the grass the cows were eating would affect the milk and the child's reaction). All I can tell you is that it goes away. If it doesn't go away then see the pediatrician. You're doing a good job! Keep it up!

I am a pediatric nurse and mom of 4, so let me see if I have any pearls of wisdom. A fever is the body's way of fighting infection. That infection could be viral or bacterial. Frequently, young children will get a fever that is not accompanied by other symptoms and a couple of days later will breakout in a fine, red, pinpoint rash. This is a virus called roseola. Teething will not cause a fever, although it can decrease the immune system's ability to fight infection, thereby resulting in illnesses concomitant with teething. If your angel is feeling ok with the fever and it isn't above 103, don't bother with Tyl/Motrin. If she is having trouble sleeping or seems cranky, dose her appropriately. Watch for signs or symptoms of infection such as poor appetite, excessive fussing, poor sleeping, green nasal discharge, cough etc... Hang in there! Remember to wash hands very well to prevent spread of infections!

Both of my daughters have had mysterious fevers with no symptoms (except irritability) that have went away with a good dose of tylenol or better yet Motrin. You might have a "bad" diaper afterwards especially if associated with teething. Don't sweat the occassional fever too much unless it just won't go away. Our doctor has us alternate between the Motrin and Tylenol, and usually the motrin has a quicker effect on the fever. Good luck and never be afraid to call her doctor-better safe than sorry.

My son had the same situation about 2 weeks ago. (He'll be one on the 12th) He got a high fever, about 102, I gave him tylenol and even took him to the doctor. They couldn't find anything wrong with him and even did a chest x-ray for pneumonia. His white blood cell count was very high so they told me to just watch it and come back the next day for them to check it. It was down the next day so they said he could have had a 24 hour virus or something. When I got home that day, one of his back teeth had popped through. That wouldn't cause his fever to be that high or his white blood cell count to be high, but it might have made things worse. He was probably just fighting a bug and babies get over it much faster than adults. The doctor (and a nurse friend of mine) did tell me that sometimes babies just get fevers and they can't explain them. Not really the explanation we want, but as long as they're feeling better I guess we'll have to live with it! Good Luch!

My children may be un-normal but between the ages of 1-5ish both of my kids have ran fever sometimes as high as 103 for no reason. It's like they wake up with it, I treat it once sometimes 2 or 3 times and it's gone. I don't know why. I have told my dr. and she says that children do funny things. I say it's teething or maybe they didn't get enough fluids the day before. Don't get me wrong they didn't do this once a week or anything but a couple times a year. Hope this helps. I would keep an eye on her but it could be her teeth.

I think that's normal. Our 14 month old has recently had a fever with teeth coming in. I gave him ibuprofen and it went down a lot. He is pretty fussy when he is teething.

My daughter did the same thing, it is usually a virus. She actually may have a rash in a few days. Alot of summer virus lead to rashes after a fever. The most important thing is just to keep your child comfortable and watch for any "concerning" behavior accompaning the fever.

It's completely normal. Sometimes kids get a fever just to have a fever. They don't have cold or infection. They just get a big ole fever, you give the motrin or tylenol and it's gone never to return.

Growing up has to be the hardest job ever.

I also am a SAHM of a beautiful 10.5 month old baby girl. She also had a high fever once of 103. I freaked out and put her in the bath. We rotated Tylenol and and Motrin per the doctor for about a day and it went away. I would think it could be her Molers if it did not come back after the Tylenol wore off, but you still might want to check with the doc.

Hello. Something similar happened with my baby, only she did have an infection. Make sure you are watching her temp constantly. If it goes back up I'd say you need to take her to the doctor. I asked my doctor and she said that teething will only cause a temp of like 99.9. Anything higher is more so a warning sign that there may be an infection somewhere.Just to let you know. Hope all is well.

My son had a high fever once a few months ago and it lasted for about a day. He had no other symptons but a day or so after the fever went away he had a red rash pop up. After going to the doctor I found out it was Roseola. Nothing serious just a common childhood illness with no treatment. So if a rash pops up that could be what it is. The rash doesn't itch or bother them thankfully.

Susannah,

Hi there. I know that a high Temp. can be a bit scarey. But if she is cutting teeth, and the meds got it down fast. Then I would have to say its her teeth. My Daughter use to do that every time she was cutting teeth. As a matter of fact just the other day she had a temp and she said her mouth was hurting and I looked and she is getting a new tooth. But keep an eye on her and if it goes up again call your Dr to be on the safe side. I hope this help you out some. God Bless you and your family. And yes children are gifts from God.
