Ferber Method - Land O Lakes,FL

I had great results with the Ferber Method when my older son was 1 year old.
My younger son will be 6 months old in March. Is it too early to try this technique with him? How old should he be?

I should also mention that he is stuck to his pacifier. When he wakes up during the night he doesn't need to be held, he just needs us to stick the paci back in his mouth. And waking 5-6 times a night just for the pacifier is wearing us out.

We obviously need to take it away for the night. Should we take it away completely during days too or can we start out with nights only. The only issue I foresee is in 2 weeks he will be with a babysitter fulltime so I can go back to work. I don't want him to have so many changes at once.

Does anyne else have these issues? How did you handle this?

Thanks,
N.

So What Happened?

So we decided since it's the pacifier that the root of the problem we decided to take it away cold turkey. We began thursday night. We put him down to bed somewhat awake. It took him about 40 minutes to fall asleep. He was cying of course and we went in at 5 minute intervals to check on him and reassure him that we're there. He continued to wake throughout that first night and we continued to check on him at the same intervals as bedtime. That night was rough and we were walking around like zombies the next day, but the next night and last night he slept all night long. AND NO PACIFIER!!!!

This method really works. All parents out there who are sleep deprived should try it. Don't get me wrong, it's heart wrenching when your child is crying, but it is worth it in the end. Both you and your child will be more restful when they finally sleep through the night.

Thanks for all the advice.

Oh my gosh. I can remember JUST how that feels. Soon, he will be old enough to find the paci himself and it won't be a problem. We used to have five or 6 in the crib.....ridiculous, but better than getting up all night. In the meantime, just focus on the Ferber. They say 6 months is the time to do it. I have three pre-school aged boys and I didn't know about it until the 2nd baby, which I did at 6 months. It didn't work until 2 months later. The third, however, probably could have done it sooner, but 6 months worked well and after only a few nights. The time I knew I could try was when they slept a very long period (maybe 8 hours) on their own. I always said to myself, if you did it once, you can do it again, and again and again.

So, I think you should keep the paci for a while, certainly at least until he's able to sleep through the night well (a couple of months). Then it's your choice. Mine all had theirs until they were 1, but the experts say they lose the "need" to suck at 6 months, so you're right there. It was just so beneficial to me for certain situations that I hated to lose it, but those were MY issues, not the baby's. Best of luck. I'd love to hear how it goes for you.

My daughter's son will be six months old on 2/28 and she has been doing the Ferber Technique for about 6 weeks.

Jackson is doing very well with the Ferber Technique.
