Fat Fingers After Pregnancy...Possibly Due to Breastfeeding?

Hi Mamas,

My baby is 15 months old, and he still nurses twice a day. I've lost all but 15 pounds of my baby weight (gained 50 total, yikes!), and I still can't fit my wedding ring on. I'm slowly but surely chipping away at those last 15 pounds, but I'm beginning to wonder if my fingers are just bigger from the pregnancy. Or could it be from breastfeeding? What are your thoughts? I don't want to get my rings resized if I don't have to, but if my fingers are bigger for good, then I'll look into it.

Thanks for your thoughts!

After my first pregnancy my upper arms are larger than they used to be. I only gained 15 lbs and via nursing lost another 20. (too bad I've gained it back.....will work on that after this baby is born). It is possible your weight has shifted. It could also be possible that you are retaining water for some reason. A trip to the doc just to make sure might be a good thing.

The same thing happened to me. I eventually did just get it resized because I wasn't losing the weight. But, after I did start losing, I had to get it resized every 10 pounds I lost. If you are really going to knock off those last 15 pounds, then I'd wait... your fingers will get smaller every 10 pounds or so.

I am a firm believer that your weight shifts during pregnancy. For my first pregnancy, I gained 18 pounds and was able to wear my wedding ring the entire time. For my second, I gained 23, but couldn't wear my wedding ring by about 4 months. I have lost all the pregnancy weight, plus about 10, but my wedding ring still does not fit. I always joke that my fat shifted to my fingers and my chin - both of which are larger since my 2nd pregnancy... My daughter is 3 1/2, and I still can't wear my ring. My husband bought me a larger size plain gold band during my pregancy and I can still wear that. He has been asking me to just size my diamond ring, but I have refused, saying that would be admitting defeat. :-) However, I have promised him that if I can't get it on by April (our daughter's 4th birthday and my 40th), I will have it resized...

I breastfed my first daughter for 11 months and my second for 14 months. I never associated my fat fingers with that only because they got fat during my second pregnancy, not while breastfeeding...

So, bottom line - you are not alone... Give it a few more months and the last 15 pounds before making the decision...
