Family Doctor Needed - Portland,OR

My family is new to the Portland area living in the SE (east of the 205). I am hoping to find a family doctor that is good - I like our old doctor because he listened, he didn't tell us what to do and was thoughtful in his approach to caring for our family. We're also trying to find someone that may be, probably not supportive of, but open to home birth- not the doctor attending the birth but open to providing general care for the mother/baby/family. Our first baby was born cesarean and I know a lot of doctors are not supportive of VBAC let alone a home birth. Any thoughts on a good family doctor and/or a pediatrician are appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am grateful to the mamas who discussed their doctors with me. Additionally, as a recent transplant from a fairly small town (compared to Portland), I had never heard of a naturopathic doctor. I am very interested in this style of care and will look into it.

We have heard great things about Monique Pritchard - she is very open to alternative healthcare approaches (e.g. vaccination schedules or no vaccines at all), and I imagine she would be supportive of a home birth. She is in SE (Sellwood), you can probably google her. Good luck!

My pediatrician, Dr. Ed Hoffman-Smith, is at 102nd and NE Weidler, close to Mall 205. He's very gentle and a good listener, with many years of experience, and has been doing home- and birth-center childbirths most of those years. He's a naturopath, but is one of the few that is willing to give vaccinations and do circumcisions, if that's what the family chooses, or is happy to not. He's very into the family's choice, and approaches medical decisions through education. He also does ultrasounds in-office. I'm an ND myself and can attest that he is very well-respected in the naturopathic community. There are other great family practice NDs in that office, too. If you're new to Oregon, it's good to know that many NDs are covered by insurance here.

Hi R.,

My family uses Dr. Joseph Sullivan at Providence Cascade Clinic (it's at 5050 NE Hoyt in the Professional Plaza connected to the hospital). He's been wonderful for my daughter, 5.5 years, and my son, 17 months. Both were born at home. His nurse is so warm and friendly too. They are pro-vaccine (of course) but have been supportive of our alternate vaccine schedule and when the nurse does give vaccines she's the fasted I've ever seen. She's got the shot in and out and a band-aid on before you know it. In the insurance booklets it always says that his practice is closed, but he's got a soft spot for babies so it's worth a shot to call and ask if he'll take you. We got our kids in after his practice was officially closed.

Hi R.,
There's a holistic primary care clinic on SE Division and 49th called Urban Wellness.
Website is urbanwellnesspdx.com
It's a group of Naturopathic Docs who will not only be very open to and supportive of a home birth, but will also know all the great midwives and Naturopathic Docs that do home births in the area to refer you to if you need recommendations.
I would suggest contacting Dr Roman Krupa. He is fantastic with kids, his wife had a home birth and is planning her next one, so he has first hand experience. He is a wonderful doc, and listening goes without saying. (ha ha)
It's a really nice clinic and you'll be in good hands and good company.

Welcome to Portland! It is a fantastic place to live and I can't think of anywhere that could offer such a wide range of healthcare choices. Good luck with everything

Helen

Hi R.,

I thought I would pass along my husbands information. He (Aaron Hubbs) is a Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist that focuses on family medicine. He also does accept insurance if yours covers ND's. He is wonderful and has a family of his own. WE did a home birth and it was wonderful so he is very supportive either way.

He works in Sellwood which is SE Portland at Elixia Wellness Group. His number is ###-###-#### if you would have any questions.

Hi! I'm A. Demetro, ND, a Naturopathic Physician and am also a Midwife, have had 2 wonderful home births/water births, and love being a doctor for the babies I help bring into the world. I take a long time with my patients, listen well, and support VBAC's (I've been a Doula for a few of these in the hospital too, but have been at home births for a few VBAC's as well). Good for you to be looking for someone who supports what you want. It's a great and safe way to go.
I'm located at Parkrose Chiropractic and Health Clinic at 11125 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland OR 97220. ###-###-####. I'm there only MWF in the mornings (I do births on the side and have a 5 and 1 yr old which are first priority). Would love to meet you!
Best Wishes, A.
