Fake Tatoos

I watch a little girl who put a fake tatoo on several weeks ago. She loved it so much she bathed with her arm out of the tub, fearful it would wash off. Well now her mother insists it come off.....and it won't. She has tried soap and rubbing alcohol and I don't know what else to suggest. Has anyone else had this problem? The tatoo isn't even sticker like anymore it really looks like the ink is in her skin.

What can I do next?

I know this is a late response...but some will come off with scotch tape! Just stick it on and peel it off. It may take a time or two, but I do this first and then use baby oil for whatever is left. I've never seen one stay on more than several days before it started peeling on its own, so this may be completely different. Good luck!

I haven't seen anyone suggest WD-40 yet. This is a safe product. I use it all the time by spraying it on a cotton ball to remove stickers and labels and a host of other things around the house. It is a Water Displacement product (hence the WD) and is great for removing grease stains from clothes also.

Hi K.,

Great thing about skin is that it sloughs off! Sooner or later it will come off.

Since you sound very concerned, gently exfoliate the skin area with a body scrub or facial scrub. Remember you don't have to press hard to exfoliate.

Best Wishes,

I love kids and the all the problem solving issues they create for us! I've never learned more from anyone than I have learned from my son!

First, if you ever want to use alcohol on the skin, it is much safer to use vodka or some form of grain alcohol. All alcohol is easily absorbed through the skin and ingesting even a small amount of rubbing (isopropol) alcohol or inhaling too much of it is highly poisonous. I wouldn't even use it to clean my dog's ears! This is one of those products that has been around so long we just assume that it is safe. If it was introduced as a new product today, it could not pass safety standards. I've known some more informed doctors to suggest that we not use any skin products that contain isopropol alcohol or any form of isopropanol product. You wouldn't believe the number of shampoos, soaps, and lotions that contain this. I have not tried this before, but if I was going to try a skin product for something like this, I would reach for the hydrogen peroxide instead.

I Googled 'temporary tattoo removal' and found a site that published the following tip (although I would use Goo Gone instead of the rubbing alcohol for tape residue and I have some doubt that the tape idea will still be effective if the tattoo is weeks old):

Temporary body art can be removed by simply applying scotch tape to your temporary tattoo and peeling the tape off your skin. Use rubbing alcohol to get rid of any residue left by your fake tattoo. You can also apply baby oil (not motor oil!) to your temporary body art, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub the tattoo off.

http://bodyjewelry.lifetips.com/cat/59846/temporary-tattoos/

I don't think I would use the scotch tape on a young child because removing the tape is painful on their tender skin. The oil idea seems to be the most popular. Apricot, coconut, and grapeseed oils are a bit less messy and less likely to stain materials. Olive oil is one of the most nutritous oils for the skin. When I was younger, all 'baby oil' was a mineral oil (like motor oil), which means it was a petroleum based oil rather than vegetable. All petroleum based oils are not good for the skin. So, I always recommend staying with vegetable based oils.

There is a product that has been advertized for rubbing away body hair instead of shaving or plucking. I think it is called 'Finally Free'. The pads you use to gently rub the hair off do not feel at all coarse to the skin and they do exfoliate nicely without heavy pressure. You can get this for about $10 at Walgreens and use a very light touch if you want to try the exfoliating approach.

All this said, I would not worry too much about the whole issue. Unless there is some new kind of ink, it would eventually fade away even if you did nothing at all. If they have developed an ink that can create permanent tattoos without the needle, it is doubtful people would still be getting them the painful way, so you can pretty safely bet that this is not permanent.

I got a real good laugh picturing this determined little girl holding her arm up out of the bath water! Sounds like she has a strong spirit. If she learns to direct this well, it can take her far. Hopefully, she will keep that spirit long after the tattoo fades and the image of her keeping that arm out of the bath water will be a permanent image in your minds and hearts that will keep you laughing for years to come!

Thanks for brightening my morning!

Please don't try the Goo Gone. Even though it is awesome for removing sticky residues, it's not good for the skin. I've used it a lot and even gotten some on my skin, but a few weeks ago I was using some and it gave me a chemical burn. It wasn't too bad, but I definitely wouldn't use it on my child's skin. Again though...it's great for other residues!

Yes it will come off try the alcohol again this time let it soak on her skin to get it wet then rub it you may need to put a little force into it but they are a hassle to get off delicate skin and especially if left on for a prolonged period of time.

My little girl loves tatoos like that too and often times they are on her arm for WEEKS. I use baby oil on a cotton ball and gently rub it and it comes right off. It is alot easier on gentler on the skin than rubbing alcohol - I'll bet cold cream would remove it too. But Baby Oil works great for us. Good luck!

Eww where did she get that thing? My sister took my daughter to a fair over the summer because I was a pregnant monster and couldnt do the outside thing, she got a little fake tattoo on her arm, but this thing was on her for over a week! I scrubbed it everyday in the bath and it wouldnt come off! I finally used those alcohol pads and still had to scrub it with that a little. But something else comes to mind, my doctor told me to use fingernail polish remover to get the bandage glue from my c-section off. That glue was crazy! But the polish remover worked but I think I would be a little leary about smearing that on my little girls skin. I hope it comes off! Those things are a pain!

Take some cooking oil, preferably olive oil, and apply it to your tattoo.
Grab a paper towel or a cloth and rub the tattoo vigorously until it is removed. Continue to add oil as needed
Take hand soap, dish soap, body wash, etc. and scrub, not too hard, but vigorously, until gone.
Apply a reasonable amount of rubbing alcohol to a cloth or cotton ball.
Rub until gone, also can use water with it.
Take some clear Scotch tape, apply over the tatto, and rip off. Don't worry, Scotch tape isn't sticky enough to hurt- only sticky enough to remove temporary tattoos!
You can also put a little baby oil on it before you go to bed, and when you wake up, it will be gone.
