Entertaining Kids While We Run

A friend has convinced me to train for a 5k run with her. I am NOT a runner so this is very difficult for me. We are trying to run three times a week together. One of those days we have our children. Our sons are 4 and 5 and they ride in her old jogging stroller while I push my daughter. We are not using a gym so a drop off service is not an option. Besides our kids enjoy the time together and we like modeling the healthy behavior. We have tried giving them snacks to "entertain" them while we train, but it is short lived and we have to help with wrappers and sharing. Do any of you have any great tricks to keep preschoolers happy while we get in our 30 minutes? We considered mp3 players, but we aren't sure how that would work. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

What can I do next?

Wow. First of all, she is going to be very strong pushing a 4 and 5 yr old while jogging!!! I second the idea of finding a track situation where you can jog and the kids can play close by or in the middle of the track. For me, we go to the kids elem school. Look around at schools or parks nearby.

I am not sure where you live... but I am sure you can find a similar set-up in your neighborhood.

My husband and I live near a park (Arcadia Park off of Basswood) that has a BIG soccer field with a jogging trail around it. My boys (4 and 5 1/2) play ball, ride their 4-wheeler, run back and fourth to catch us or even fly kites while we run.

They rarely get bored.
Good Luck!

My husband and I are both training for a 1/2 marathon coming up in 2 weeks.

We've been doing our training at night and alternating which one watches the kids while the other one goes for a run. Likewise, we take turns on the weekends with our long runs.

We have a friend we train with who's in the same situation - we couldn't get the kids to cooperate long enough for a good run in strollers (we both have recently-turned 2 year olds, and I have a 3.5 year old).

I like running in the evening while my husband gives them a bath and gets them prepared for going to bed. I don't know if that's an option for your husbands to help, but it's certainly made life a lot easier on us. We're all also working parents, so our options are only after business hours.

My kids are 4 and 5 and I let them share my ipod while I'm running. They each get an earphone and I have a kids playlist that they like to listen to

hi,
When my kids were that age... I had the same problem.. I let them play their leapster or nintendo ds.. and then at the end of the jog the kids would get to get out and jog :)

I have resorted to iPod movies for my 3 yr old on long car trips. We have ear phones for her. It's not ideal but that's the only thing besides snacks that will keep her occupied for that extended amount of time. Just make sure it is not too loud. There are also portable DVD players where you don't have to use earphones. I don't know if using a laptop to play movies would be an option for you too.

Could you take turns to run too? She can watch your kids while you run and vice versa.

We have a ball diamond that is fenced in, it's great to get a workout in without having to worry about my 2 year old wandering.

Try the kids FP3 players. Or have them ride bikes. I go on a track where it is fenced so they run around and play ball etc.

Maybe have a toy that they only get to play with while in the jogging stroller? That way its a treat and will keep them entertained...I don't have any hand held video games (just don't believe in it) for my kids, but I did buy a few "waterfuls" that are like what we used to play with when we were kids, its basically a toy filled with water and you push a button to get the balls in the cups, or rings on the fish's nose, etc. and they are only allowed to play with them in the car. (car rides are sometimes a challenge). Or they have small "coloring books" that the pages are more like cardboard and the "pen" you use is just filled with water, the color comes out when it gets wet-we use these only at church. Or else Color magic books also, although there are more than one marker for those, so I'd think it would be difficult to use in a stroller. The first one I mentioned only has one pen. Maybe a stitching block also? You get the idea. I'm lucky I guess that my daughter is pretty content in mine, just looking around at nature! lol. Good for you for choosing a healthy lifestyle!
