We are experiencing changes at my husband's job. I am looking for part-time work. I found a job on craigslist, that I have the right experience for. It is 2 evenings and a weekend day, which is perfect! I have been stay at home since I became pregnant with my son. He is 27 months, so a long time. I don't know what to write in the email!! Do I mention that I am a SAHM? I mean, it can't look good to them, to see 3 years of no work on the resume. Do I put that I am a SAHM on the resume? I've never seen hat before. AHH...this is so new to me now...help!! They need to fill the position quickly, so I'm hoping to send my resume today. Thanks so much ladies!

Be honest and spell it put. I am hiring manager for sales, accounting and admin office. When I see unexplained gaps in resumes of more than a year I typically pitch that resume. I would spell out in the resume the time period you have been sahm and then again on the cover sheet state you took time off to be a mom and are ready to reenter the labor market.

When looking on craigs, I always say:

[company name],

My name is [name] and I saw your job listing on craigslist, and I think I would be a perfect fit for your company. As you can see by my resume (please see attached), I have (list a few skills here). Please contact me via phone or email at your earliest convenience so we can discuss an interview.

Thank you for your time,
[your name and email addy and phone # here]

Don't mention the SAHM part, if it comes up in the interview, address it then.

Then attach your resume. GOOD LUCK!!

Make sure your home address is NOT on your resume you are e-mailing to a craigslist posting. Your e-mail address and/or phone number should be good enough.

If you worry too much about this, then it is going to get in the way of you writing a good resume in the first place.

Present yourself for your qualities and skills which you can bring to an employer and do not focus on "lacks" or "negatives". Of course you need to be honest in your self assessment, but you need to believe in yourself to the point that you see yourself in the way you want your employer to see you. You were a stay at home mom! You do realize the organization, patience, and wisdom that takes, right?!

There is no reason you need to say anything on the resume itself regarding the gap in employment. You can discuss that when the interview time comes. And really, there won't be much discussion about it at all. 27 months is nothing in the big picture!

** SWH - Just keep it simple and don't mention anything about the gap in employment. =) GOOD LUCK!

Make sure to attach a cover letter, that's where you can tailor it to the position and highlight your skills - WHY you would be good for the position. I would not mention that you've been not working for three years. Just put your work history on your resume, if they are interested and you get an interview, then they may ask, then you can mention it. At this point, just be professional and concentrate on your assets, sell yourself, your talents, etc. in your resume and cover letter. You should not be too wordy in the email itself. Just make sure the subject line is descriptive and to the point - attach the resume, make sure you have a professional-looking signature block and just say something like. "I am very interested in such and such position, attached you will find my resume. Thank you so much for your time and consideration"

If you're too personal and wordy off the bat, it's a turn off for employers. Good luck!!!

I did this the other day actually haha! I keep it super short and sweet- like "To whom it may concern: My name is blahblah and I am applying for the lalaland position. I have the experience and knowledge needed for this position, with x years of experience in the woohoo field.

Attached is my resume.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Hello! I came across your posting on craigslist for XXX... i was VERY excited to see this posting and feel that I am the right candidate for the position and would be a great addition to the team. I bring to the table xxxx. Attached please find my resume for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

As a recruiter - I don't mind at all seeing SAHM on a resume and neither do my hiring managers...there are those on this site that tell you not to do it. but I say account for your time....and a lot of my hiring managers LOVE domestic engineers because that means that this person can USUALLY multi-task and handle hard tasks....

GOOD LUCK!!

I wouldn't worry about it. Google cover letters for SAHM's looking for new work, I'm sure you'll get good suggestions!
