Edward Hospital vs Rush Copley

I just found out that I am pregnant with baby #3. Baby #1 was born in the Alternative Birthing Center at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, and I had a wonderful birth experience. Baby #2 was born at Edward Hospital, and I had a so-so experience. I delivered both kids naturally without an epidural. Now I'm wondering if any of you moms have delivered at both Rush Copley and Edward, and whether or not you would favor one hospital over another. I live close to Edward Hospital and like my OB, but I wasn't impressed with the hospital itself. Basically, I found it difficult to try to deliver naturally when their beds were totally uncomfortable and their jacuzzi tub was dirty. Pretty petty complaint, but I'm wondering if I should switch practices and hospitals if there is a much more "enjoyable" labor and delivery to be had at Rush Copley. Also, if you do highly recommend Rush, could you please recommend an OB? Thanks so much for your input.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the info! I forgot about Mercy Provena. I will go ahead and set up tours of both Mercy and Rush. I'll probably end up being lazy and staying with my current practice. But it will be good for me to see for myself if the grass is green enough to switch to the other side.

I was at West Sub for my first and Rush Copley for the next tw. I like Rush much better. Karren Barr and Noreen are terrifice midwives. I used the birthing tub, and had great water births. Lactation wasn't that great at either hospital. I didn't like the pediatrician at Rush for my second child, so I asked around and got a better one by the third. They actually let me go home (at my request) the night I had my third. But it's not protocal and took some planning. Feel free to email me for more info, but I highly recommend Karen and Noreen.

Everyone's experience is going to be different. My neighbor had her son at Rush and loved it. I had my son a little less than a year ago at Edwards and I absolutely loved it. Try maybe taking a tour at Rush and then Edwards. This would help you compare and make a much better choice for your needs. Hope this helps and congrats on baby #3.

I had two great experiences at Rush, but I did have an epidural. But I do agree the staff and nurses were great and it was clean. My ob was Ellen Embry through womens healthcare associates. The whole set of doctors in the practice are great. Embry delivered my first and Simmons delivered my second.

Hi Lucy,
Being a prenatal yoga teacher in Naperville and Aurora, I've had yoga students with recent positive natural birth experiences at both hospitals.
I have not in the past asked for the names of the doctors/midwives.
For people in Illinois, www.birthlink.com provides information about birthing choices/resources.

I enjoyed my birth experience at Rush Copley...but I'm a little different because I had twins and had an epidural. I'm very happy with my OB out of Copley, her name is Stephanie Simmons. Her practice, Women's Healthcare Associates is at Copley, which makes it easier if you go in for a checkup and find out you are in labor.

They just recently moved into their new office in the new building at Copley and it looks wonderful.
Have you thought about asking for a tour of their facilities to see if you would like it before you deliver? Since the hospitals are in competition with each other, I'm sure that they can accomodate your request without you being a patient yet.

Hi Lucy, I am a mother of 2. Both of my girls were born completly naturally, no drug at all. I delivered at Provena Mercy and had a great experience with both. However with my first I got frustrated because I had one nurse that would not stop asking me if I wanted meds, she eventulally got fed up with me and left me to the other nurse who was wonderful. My second child came very quickly and the nurses were wonderful no one offered anything and just followed my birthplan. I did use a mid wife. I do know she also goes to Rush Copley but prefers to go to Provena Mercy becasue it is closer to her practice. The practice is called Women First it is Aurora, it is a very run down office but I was very happy with them. However the midwife that delivered both my girls left just this June. The midwife that is still there deliverd my midwifes children and is also very good. Hope everything works out for you.

I dont know how Rush is and i am not fond of Edward's myself, but have you considered Provena Mercy in Aurora?
I have had 2 kids there naturally, as well as my sister and my boss (6 natural deliveries is pretty good for a hospital i think!)

We all used Womens First Midwifery, Deb Ridell is the midwife. She does deliver at Rush Copley, but I thought Provena was so clean, quiet and comfortable that i stayed there. I have also delivered at Delnor (naturally) which was not a great experience. My 2 sisters had bad experiences at CDH, so Provena is the only local hospital i recommend.

Deb Ridell has delivered. 11 babies that I personally know and she is fabulous! She is so calming and informative. She spends so much time explaining things. Her staff is the best-i actually miss going there every week!

Good luck with your pregnancy. I am sure that wherever you go you will have a beautiful birthing experience.

I had both my girls (almost 6 and a little over 4 years ago.) My experience the first time was wonderful. Everyone was so great to help out and give information. The second time was different. Everyone was still pleasant. However, I feel like I did not get the help or guidance that I did with the first one. Lots of my friends have experienced it this way too. I asked one of the nurses about this. They said the many times the second time moms don't like to be bothered as much. But that if I needed anything, or would like them to check on me often the would do that. I think you may just have to voice your opinions a little louder if you decide to go with Edward this time.
