I want to put together an easter basket for my 6 mo. girl.....which would mostly be symbolic....something to say, "this was your first easter".....since most easter baskets consist of candy...and my baby is just now eating cereal...does anybody have any cute ideas....I've already purchased a chirping chick stuffed animal
I found a small purple, felt basket at hobby lobby....they had all kinds of things to decorate it with....I chose a felt, flower picture frame, with a recent photo of her...on the other side I did her name and first easter. I stuffed it with a babies first easter bib, a churping chick....and a babies first bible...which I took to cokesbury methodist bookstore and had them emboss her name on it.

Hi A.. I am a mother of an 8 year old daughter and a 4 year old son. My son was born in Dec. so by Easter, I was in about the same shape as you. I made a huge pretend basket out of a plastic swimming pool. I filled it up with lots and lots of plastic eggs. I placed a couple of stuffed animals in it as well, and when he woke up, he really enjoyed just playing in the eggs and seeing all the bright colors. Later that summer, I used the pool for his swimming pool. Fun!!

I would suggest buying her a nice Bible. If you have ever been to the little shop on Alexander called Bo Peep, they have a really nice bible for baby girls that have a poem with them. It talks about what the bible is for and how they can use it on their wedding day. After all, isn't that what Easter is all about anyway. And it would make a nice keepsake. Good luck and Happy Easter. R.

No matter what your beliefs are, the most ideal thing you can give your beautiful baby girl, and the most enduring symbolic keepsake, is her first Bible. For centuries Bibles have been given and received as gifts to mark momentous occassions, and when it is inscribed in your own handwriting, will make a sweet and thoughtful treasure that can be handed generation to generation. A simple inscription with her name, birthdate, city of birth, a notation about it being her first Easter, and an expression of your love will be something she will cherish forever. Small children's Bibles are available everywhere books are sold and come in a variety of styles and prices.
A couple of candy treats for Mom and Dad are allowed (smile)
and don't forget to take pictures of her in her Easter outfit with her first basket!!

I have a six month old and am also having some trouble! So far I have bought 2 board books, a chick rattle, and a "magic grow" washcloth from the dollar store. I thought I would put in a few bottles of juice and maybe a little box of those teething cookies. My son is in need of new pacifiers, so maybe a package of those, too!! Hope that helps!

Hi A.,
I have a son who is almost 7 months and I had the same idea. I love to read him books, so I thought about including a book and maybe an easter bib (potter barn kids has some great things) He is really into toys that make noise, anything he can put in his mouth. If you come up with any other ideas I would love to hear them!

Any small items that are age appropriate will work. Instead of candy, try Marias. They are a wafer cookie that is a product of Mexico. The flavor resembles animal crackers but the cookies are much larger (therefore easier for little hands to hang onto) and they dissolve into a mush instead of splintering. My kids/grandkids grew/are growing up using them instead of teething biscuits and I always keep packages on hand at Halloween for the youngest trick or treaters. A single package cost 50 cents or less at most grocery stores.
Another tradition that I started when my kids started getting older was putting change in the plastic eggs and it is a hit with the grandkids too. The eggs are bright and amuse the babies with both color and noise but I have to stuff them tightly for the older kids because they would pick up an egg and put it back if it didn't rattle. Be sure to tape the eggs shut so the baby doesn't get it open and end up putting the coins in the mouth. At the end of the hunt, everyone has a sweet addition to their bank.

Hi A., You could get her a little cross to hang in her room. It will be there for years to come and remind you of her 1st Easter. Another thing we got our daughter was some little toys like little wrist wrattles or teether stuff but she may be too old for that now I don't know. Get her items that she will need anyway that are kinda Easterish like books, plate with spoon those kinda things. HTH!

You can buy a bottle if she is still on one that says babys first easter. I have also seen bibs that says babys first easter . You will have to look around to see but I think places like dollor general or family dollar sales stuff like that . Don't use the straw baskets cause babys can chew them and get little bits of pieces stuck in their mouth . If she is teething you can also put teething rings in the basket . you can also put buttery cookies in the basket ( easy to dissovle ) like shortbread cookies . I hope you can get some ideas from what I have to offer. Good Luck !

I always make my own baskets. I have never bought a premade one. When my first babies Easter came around she was only 6 months, and since it was more symbolic and for "me' I got her an angel figurine to watch over her, a children's bible, and children's flatware, "Oneida" has a children's set that is adorable, and has bunnies on the ends. perfect for Easter. We still have hers and she is now 8 years old, it will be something i treasure until she has children and I had it down to her, and her babies. And don't forget the cute Easter outfit complete with a bonnet, they will only let you dress them up for so long...
I just checked the site (onieda), they no longer carry the peter rabbit set, they have others that are nice. Or you can go to "replacements.com" and get them there. there is a 3 piece infant set, and a 3 piece youth set.
anyways, these are things that begin a life time of family traditions. Hope you find all you are looking for, just remember to enjoy the day.

When my babies were to little for the good stuff in their Easter baskets,I would put items in there with in their age range. Like for your 6 month old you can put things like biter biscuits, animal crackers, those little containers of cheerios, new socks, baby toothbrush, maybe a new bottle/sippy cup ( which ever one you use), a new outfit, pacifier, blanket, cd. Get creative mom, really this is much more for us than the baby, but if you need to feel like she is apart of the morning fill her basket up with useful things that you would use or give her on a normal day. I also do this with my boys who are older now 7 & 4, they get the candy and boiled eggs, but I also get things that can REALLY be used and not found under the bed in a few days!! Good luck!

For both of my children's easters (I'm not big on candy) I got plastic easter eggs and put in colorful easter socks, even baby socks) the basket also had easter books and little beanie size babies (at Walgreens, you can get them for $1.00!) A coloring book and some washable crayons, fingerpaints, paper and stickers. I understand you have a little one, but you can get paints and let her do her hand or feet prints! (when I worked in daycare, we let the babies paint a lot) Also, you can replace the candy with biter buiscuts or those puffy star snacks.
Now that both of mine are bigger, they get one chocolate bunny in their basket, but it's still mostly just easter socks and books.

My grandson was 5 mos old his first easter and my son being a single dad put together a cute basket. He found a basket which was an egg which opened up and inside he put some learning blocks, a cute baseball outfit (Astros), a small glove and baseball and neatly arranged it so that when you opened it the outfit came up and the other items were on top. My grandson was reaching in picking the blocks up, trying to figure them out and no candy was put in but rather things like the set of 3 learning spoons. Things which I've kept and since he's now 5 and those items are no longer things he plays with or uses, I recreated the basket and one day he will have it for memories. I have pictures of him with it so he'll have a double memory.

Hi A.,
I have a great suggestion. Go to your local hardware store preferrrably Lowes if you have one. Near the registers or in the garden dept. they have these eggs that come with a plant inside. The child can help plant the item and watch it grow. IN your case of course, you and your husband can plant it and look forward to the years to come and transfer it to a garden or choose one that can be kept in an indoor planter. Great idea isn't it. I knew you would agree.

Since your daughter won't remember this Easter it might be a fun thing to give her something that she can keep as a memento. A first Bible, a special card, something to hang in her room, a charm, etc. My daughter was a little older on her first Easter so I bought a couple of colorful books and a stuffed animal. You can get the individual servings of the Gerber Graduates snacks to put in the basket, too. Another thing I did for my son was to go to the Hallmark store and buy an Easter ornament (not sure if they still sell them) and hang it on his basket..it's still there years later and has a story!

Maybe you can try and find a sippy cup, plate, bowl, spoon for infants with Easter animals. I did a lot of that kind of stuff for my two munchkins.

For my daughter's first easter, my mom sent the Lillian Vernon (Lilly's Kids) "Easter Pals in a Basket" (SKU # 015625) which is a plush easter basket with plush eggs that you open up (they have velcro closures) and there are little plush animals, flowers, carrots, etc., inside them. It says 12 months plus, but if you look at the picture online, you can decide if it's OK for your little one. If you go to lillianvernon.com and enter the number, it should come up.
I also think the summer toys/bathing suit idea is great. I was thinking about bath toys and bath paints. She may not be able to use bath paints now, but as soon as she's ready to fingerpaint, she can. They are a mess, but at least they're in the tub!

Something my parents always did for us, and I continue it now with my children, is that we always got a new swimsuit in our Easter basket for the upcoming swim season. (Of course, as we got older, we received gift certificates to the stores we liked that carried swim suits!)
They were very anti-candy so this was our 'big' gift which made everyone happy! If you like the idea, it's not too young to start.

You can get some fun plastic eggs and fill them with puffs or cherios. Also get some tulle and ribbon and wrap some jars of cereal. If wraped right, like you would wrap a basket, with all the tulle gathered at the top, it could look like flowers. I would also put in a new outfit. Its fun to have something little for them. But have practical items instead of what is just filler. You can also include a new 1st Easter bib. Have fun and enjoy the day!

What I did was got a basket together and picked out some cute summer outfits a fun teething ring, Easter Eggs with nothing in it so he can open and close them, some books. I just thought about what he would need as the months would come and what he liked to play with now. He had a blast opening it up and to top it off I add some candy that I liked so I can eat it later. lol This year were going to the beach so I'm putting his stuff in a Sand bucket with some new swim trunks a towel and fund stuff. My boy was only 6 mos at his 1st easter, too. I did an oversize pillowbuddy style animal(bunny) that he could prop up against when he tried to sit up or could lay on when playing on his belly. He adored it! and even now, at 16 months, he still loves it and sleeps with it. Toys that light up and give them something to watch and stimulates their brains is good too. I did several things: the bunny pillowpal, clothes, hand-held learning toys and a couple of baby snacks. he saw all his siblings getting stuff and he loved getting to be like them. His eyes were huge when he saw the bunny, and everyone's reaction to him. It was so cute, and he even got to hunt eggs with the big kids, sord of. I walked around and found eggs for him and he would try to grab them. He laughed so much when we would get close to one and he started understanding what was expected. hope this helps and cherish it. these moments only come once, much to our regret....if only we could go back once in a while to revisit those sweet days...lol!

This past Christmas my daughter was her first and she was almost 3 months old. Since our 4 year old son believes in Santa it was very important to maintain that for him. So I gathered up things that she already had and wrapped those up for her stocking and put a gift under the tree from "Santa" that a neighbor had given her at birth. Like with you, it was a bit more symbolic than anything else. There were a few things that I bought because she either needed them or I'd been wanting to buy them anyway, but not much. So for the photos she had a bundle of stuff and our son saw stuff from Santa. Hope that helps!

At walmart they sell the wicker baskets i think they are only like $3 (and you can use them all year for laundry or stuff in her room), then we bought a big stuffed animal, a bib that said my first easter, a bottle and a rattle that was "eastery" they have all this at walmart in the easter isles, and then anything else we felt like throwing in there like a outfit, or other toys, just get her things she would like to play with or something for her to wear. I think its mostly for us on their first holidays anyway. I hope this helps!

Hi A.!
I know you have gotten several responses that sound awesome! So I will just add a little tip from me. (My son was 3 mos old for his first Easter.)
I personally would skip the candy/food items all together. I think the Easter Bunny might fill a baby's first Easter basket with toys and books that are age appropriate. I sell Discovery Toys (www.discoverytoyslink.com/AJs_Mom) and one of my favorite things to say to parents at this time of year is that Toys and Books are "Better Than Chocolate" for kids at any age. Teethers are great additions too.

When my kids were small (and now with my grandkids), I would put animal crackers (you can find them in Easter boxes now!) in their baskets, as well as a colorful bib, maybe some cute socks, a teething toy in the shape of a duck, etc. Other food items would be the teething biscuits, fruit/veggie puffs and/or arrowroot cookies sold on the baby food aisle. Depending on your budget, you can find lots of smaller "toy" items in the baby accessory aisle at Wal-Mart or Target. I'd steer away from the dollar stores, as many of these items are imported from China and may contain lead.
