My son is 5 1/2 months old. He has had two episodes of ear infections. I hate putting him on antibiotics but also want him out of pain. Does anyone know of any other way of treating or preventing ear infections. I just feel helpless.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Jonas is feeling much better this week. I ended up giving him the antibiotic the Peditrician prescribed. He is still pulling on his ears but is not restless like he was before. He is still on the antibitotic so hopefully it will cure it. But now I have a lot of good ideas for the next time he gets a ear infection. Hopefully he doesn't though. Thanks to all that gave me their advice. I appreciate it.

My daughter did a homeopathic remedy on my grandson last week. I couldn't believe that it actually worked. It is painful at first, but about 10 min later he was playing like nothing ever happened. It had to be done one more time before the night was through, but no antibiotics!
All she did was cut open a garlic pill and drop about 3 drops in his ear. Then she held a warm wash cloth over his ear.
Like I said, 10 min later he was fine. I hope this works for you.

Our doctor give a shot that helps prevent ear infections. I believe it is call Prevnar. My little girl is 3 and has only had one since she started taking that. I think she has had 2, one per year the last two years. It seems to work for her. Hope things get better for him! Those are miserable!

Hi T.,
Have you consider a visit to a chiropractor? Ear infection can be prevented and treated by simple adjustment. I take my son to the chiroprator's office since he was 4 months old and never had any problems with ears. As matter as fact I take him for an ajustment anytime he's coming down with any kind of cold or fly simptoms and it always works.
P.S: I just read Lisa's responce. Couldn't be said better. Good luck.

Hi T.,

Dr. Sear's recommended that you let your kid play outside in cooler weather because that will drain the congestions that causes ear infections. We are still stuck in the mindset that get catch a cold from being cold even in the face of research to the contrary. My Japanese neighbor has her kids wear shorts year round and they are used to the cold and never get ear infections. I have started rethinking how we all dress for going outside after investigating her advice. My son spends time outside everyday and has only experienced one ear infection that cleared up without treatment following a really terrible cold. So my advice is to allow him to decongest naturally by being cold and never get ENT infections again.

my son also had many ear infections that anti-biotics did not cure. I started giving him a dropper full of cod liver oil in his formula and not only did the ear infections cease but his dry skin cleared up, poop was nice and soft and the dha made his brain function so well that he was counting to 20 at 15 months. Google it, cod liver oil and ear infections :)

Also try and feed your baby with them sitting up not laying down at all, this way the formula doesnt pool in thier ears and cause infection.....

Your Pediatrician will most likely recommend seeing an ENT for tubes after 2 or 3 more..My daughter gets them alot & she is 18 months..They have sent me to the ENT before, but I changed my mind & they want to send me back..However, I have considered & recently started her on chiropractic care to prevent them..She has only been going a few weeks, so I wont most likely see results for another month to find out if it's working since she has had one in the beginning, of which it didnt clear up with an antibiotic so she had to have a different one..I personally just wanted to try this one last thing before surgery, I dont feel comfortable with even the slight rick that she could go deaf if the surgery went wrong..There are no risks with the chiropractor adjustments & they dont adjust babies like they do adults, it's all pressure points..Just some info., I hope it helps, I know how frustrating it can be & helpless I feel when she has the pain as well..

Hi T.,
Have you tried Chiropractic? Most likely he is subluxated and which may be the cause of his irritability and discomfort. What a lot of parents end up not realizing about ear infections that most of the time a child will have one and us parents will not know it but will clear up on it's own. A child gets sick far more than an adult obviously and is severe at glance because their body is developing an immunity to it. Plus we hate to see our kids with even a sniffle. Docs are here to leviate us of our pain and not always have our best interest in mind. Most medicine does not cure, it only masks our symptoms. If a childs body is allowed to process the virus/infection and heal it their immunity to it is getting stronger. Don't get me wrong...there is always a time and place for medicine. Us parents are to quick to seek that immediate cure. Here is a link you can go to that just gives a little info about ear infections and helping parents in making an informed decision about medicating. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/08/science/08drug.html?ex=...

Fever: kills the bacteria & virus. Slows down reproduction of virus & bateria. Speeds up chemical reactons in the body to fight infection & get the body back to normal. Promotes the production of cancer fighting agent interferon.
Diarrhea: Elimination of poisons, bacteria & germs from your blood.(diarrhea isn't fun but shouldn't be stopped..but within reason obviously)
Couphing,Sneezing & Running Nose: expellation of excess germs & toxins. Sluffing off of the old mucous lining to replace it with a newer healthy one.
There was once a doctor who went on the Morning Show talking about over the counter medicines for kids. You should try to google it...very interesting. If you have more questions and to help you always make an informed decision, you can check out nvic.org I hope you do not think I am trying to harp on you. Only reitterating that you are a wonderful mother and just reminding you of what you already know! BEST OF LUCK!!!

I have three girls, 12 years, 5 years and 9 months old.
My 12 year old had them so bad that she had to get tubes in when she was 4 years old. That is all it took for her.
Now my 5 year old it was different. She had to have two sets of tubes because she got them back after the first set fell out.
What my doctor and I have discovered is that it was the water getting into her ears during her bath time. So whenever she got her bath we would place cotton balls in her ears and that stopped all ear infections.
Hopefully, this is helpful to you!!

Hi ~ My name is M. and I own an all natural bath, body and wellness business call Everything Bath. I have an all natural aromatherapy blend for children suffering from ear infections. My son had an ear infection at 1 wk old and was put on antibiotics. 2 days later he got a rash and was allergic.. this happened 3x's w/ 3 different antibiotics. This prompted me to make a blend for him and since then he hasn't been to the doctor with an illness for 3 years. I hand blend and create all my blends here in my office in Indianapolis. I know this sounds gross, but several people, including my grandma, says to take a little bit of pee formt the toilet and heat it up and pour into the ear and cover it witha cotton ball.
