Can anyone provide suggestions on some DVDs/television programs that are more educational based? For example, learn ABC's, 123's, etc? Thx

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great ideas everyone! Unfortunately I don't receive Noggin or have Comcast but have started to tape some PBS shows and also might find a copy of Leapfrog Factory series. Thanks again!

For DVD's I agree with the Leap Frogs. There is Talking Words, Letter Factory, and Match Circus. The Talking Words teaching more of the basics of spelling words. We also have Pooh ABC and Pooh 123. Both of those are good. We watch a lot of Disney. The morning programs teach various different things. Higgly Town Heroes teaches about different jobs and their importance. Handy Manny teaches them about helping and fixing things along with some Spanish. The Doodle Bops are music related with a nice message. In between the programs they have short shows where they learn different things. Choo Choo Soul has a song were you count to 12. Around noon they go to a movie. Then are the older kid shows. These are commercial free. The only commercials they do are Disney related, about a new movie, music videos, another show. My kids are 19mo, 3 1/2, and 5 and they love all the shows and DVD's.
Good luck!

My children learned their ABC's with Letter Factory from Leap Frog DVDs. They also have Word Factory, Code Word Capers, and a Math DVD as well.

My daughter loves Super Why on PBS! Especially that Alpha Pig! I recommend that. It is on PBS at 9 AM. I don't really let her watch anything else. Sometimes she gets Clifford, and Curious George does a lot of math and sciences.

Muzzy...is a good one. It will teach your child a foreign language. When they are young it is easier to learn. You can get one from the library. I love to take my daughther there they also have a huge selection of those videos that you could tryout before you buy and save some unnecessary purchases. A lot of times those vidoes go unwatched. I know I have about 30-40 videos. She likes to go to the library she feels like she is buying something If you get them from the library you can always switch and try new ones!

Try Bear in the Big Blue House videos or Blues Clues all teach not only wonderful lessons on friendship, sharing, cleaning up, etc they also teach about numbers, colors & abc's. I know my grandson now 8 loved the programs. And so did I because they had good wholesome lessons. Thomas the Tank Engine another of my grandson's favorites reinforced lessons about friendship, sharing & getting along with others as well as some of the search and find, letters & colors in the games that are always included along with the trains he could play with.

Hi there!
Well I would say Baby Einstein in the most popular, they have great DVDs for all sorts of learning topics. Also, the "SO Smart" DVD series is really good. In terms of television programs, I've found that Blue's Clues incorporates more learning than other Disney channel or Noggin shows I've seen. And lastly, my son learned his letters from the Leapfrog letters DVD. He knew sounds of letters before he was 2 and it was all because of that movie! Of course you sitting down with your child and reinforcing it is the best. :) Hope that was helpful. Good luck!

I think I just responded to one of your other posts... If you have Comcast... go to On Demand...then Kids...then Baby Boost (I think). Check out Eebie. He's awesome and does a TON of creative play ideas.

PBS has a show on at 9am called Super Why. My kids love it! Playhouse Disney also offers some great educational shows that teach things like team work, critical thinking, etc.

Leapfrog has a couple of good videos/DVDs my kids loved - letter factory and word factory and there is also a math one. My second son, who started watching it when he was just shy of two was recognizing all the letters and knew what sounds they make w/in 4 months or so, with a couple times a week viewing it.

Channel 11 PBS has Word World on at 11:30. It definitely is great for teaching letters, sounds and spelling. I highly recommend it. I am a former teacher and I think they make learning fun! Also check out Super Why and another one my kids like is called World Girl. I don't feel so guilty letting them watch tv when they are watching shows like this. Of course there is Seasame St. but my twins never seemed interested in it.
All the shows I mentioned are on PBS.

We have Comcast cable and I love the OnDemand channels that come with it. You can pick from a variety of shows WHENEVER you feel like it. (A great perk for going with this cable company!)

I think Playhouse disney on the Disney channel is excellent. It's on from 5 or 6 am until 11 am on Disney. Also the Baby Einstein videos are excellent especially the "My First Signs" video that teaches kids sign language.

I suggest any of the Baby Einstein or Little Einstein videos. They come in all age groups. I wish these videos were around when my son was young. My sister, who has small children, swear by these.

My daughter just turned two in September. On her second birthday she was able to count to ten without prompting, say her ABC's clearly and she new almost all her colors. This is my first child and it amazed me how much she could recite...very clearly. She is a HUGE Elmo nut and watches all his Elmo's world videos and such as well as Seseme Street. Elmo counts in every episode along with other learning things and I really think that this is where she has picked most of it up at. I must admit that in the evening that "Elmo goes to sleep" and isn't on, just so my husband and I can have some sanity! :)
Have fun!

I tell you what, with my oldest I didn't let her watch much TV and when I tried to teach her things she just wouldn't listen. She is bright, but I feel I could have done better with her. My second child liked to watch Dora and I thought it was a stupid show. However, she is 2 1/2 and can count to 10 in Spanish, 20 in English, knows all her shaped and colors and can speak some spanish also. I think it is a great show for them to watch. There are many more like it too. I hope this helps!

Not sure how old your children are, but my daughter is 4 yrs old and loves watching Signing Time, which teaches sign language. She also loves Little Einsteins. She's been watching each of these for 1-2 years now. Just Google both to find out channels/times they come on in your area.

Don't now how old your twins are but research shows kids don't learn from TV under the age of two and it can actually hinder the learning process. A resent study came out about the Baby Einstine stuff and said that not only is it a waste of money, for every hour a child is set in front of these videos each day, their vocab at age 2 is decreased by 25 words!! Not good :(
If your kids are older than 2, I'd go with anything on or endorsed by PBS. Signing time is great because they learn signs as well as words. Of course, Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, etc...are classics :)
They learn better with songs, so stick to sing-songy types instead of cartoons.

I have to agree with the other moms' Leap frog makes great learning DVD's my son loves them and he generall hates anything educational. Blue's Clue's is also very good my son loved that also, not so much anymore (he's 5yrs.) There's all sorts of good educational shows out there. Toys'r'us has a good selection.

I rented Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and my son LOVES it and could see it everyday if I let him. Has a song(also a book) to help learn the order.
Sesame Street? Baby Einstein? My son seems to get something out of Word World on TV. And Super Why. He's just turned three.
I also think songs might really help.

Good luck!

I recommend Sesame Street and Super Why! Both on PBS. We don't have cable or dish, so we are limited to PBS, but they have fantastic programming. You should consider just watching some of it yourself and see what you think.
