You should dress in a nice skirt and blouse. I know it's for an elementary school, but you still need to display some sort of professionalism. Once you have the job, go back to jeans or whatever. lol Good luck!
Hey moms I have a question for you about what to wear to an interview. I know that a suit would be my best option, but here's the deal: I am currently the long-term subsitute for the class I did my student teaching in. The classroom teacher I worked with was pregnant with twins and when she left in January, I took over the class. She became a stay at home mom and so I had a job for the remainder of the year. Well, the job is now open for interviews (we have been in a hiring freeze). This job would be so perfect; it's my favorite grade, less than five minutes from home, daughter's daycare is two blocks away, and I love my co-workers. The principal I work with informed me on Friday that he has been given the go ahead to start doing interviews and he is putting me down for sometime Thursday or Friday. I am assuming this will either be during my planning period, after school, or they will have someone come cover the classroom for me while I go do the interview. I am for sure going to bring my makeup and my straightner and I hope that I will have time to freshen up! My question is: what should I wear? It's not like I'm going to really have the option to change. I always dress very nice (we can wear jeans every day, but I only do on Fridays, I always wear very nice dress pants with nice tops and flat shoes because I am on my feet all day) Obviously I will NOT wear jeans, but how should I dress? I know the principal will understand if my hair is a mess or if I have paint on me, etc. I am for sure going to wear heels. Do you think I should come to school in a suit? I really really want and need this job so what advice do you ladies have? Thanks!
Thank you thank you! This is my first "real" job and first interview so I wanted to make sure I was ready! I have practiced what I am going to say and I have a great relationship with the other teachers and with the principal so even though I'm sure I will be nervous, I will feel more comfortable knowing that they have seen the work that I do. I am really hoping the interview is on Friday because I just realized we have a field trip Thursday haha!

Personally, I have been sitting on the other side of the interview desk, as a supervisor at my old job I was tasked with interviewing potential new hires, I was more interested in what they had to SAY instead of what they were WEARING!!! I agree with the rest of the Moms, wear a nice pair of slacks and a blouse, take your jacket along to toss on at the last minute. Maybe a nice necklace or earrings to pull it all together and you are set to go!! I would also think about some of the things that the principal will likely ask you and "practice" with a friend so that you have your thoughts in order and can be a bit more calm and "ready"!!! Since you are already a "known substance" there at the school you should probably have a leg up on the competition since they already know how well you fit in, how you work with the children, etc.
Good luck to you!!
If you already have a good relationship with the staff and administration and have gotten good performance reviews you will be almost certain to be hired. Make sure you feel comfortable in what you wear. By that I mean, you don't want to wear something that makes you feel like you are not yourself, or something that will keep you fussing and tugging at it, which will make it look like you are not confident (an important quality for a teacher).
Wear something that makes you feel terrific.
If you feel it is appropriate, ask one of your coworkers if they know how working subs handle clothing for the interview-between-classes problem.
If they have not dealt with this problem, they may know someone else who has.
Hi R.,
Wear your nicest work outfit, but bring along a sharp jacket and a pair of really nice shoes to throw on just for the interview. And maybe one really classy/sophisticated accessory you wouldn't wear for work, but bumps your whole look up a notch.
It will be enough to get you out of "kid" mode, and into "interview" mode!
good luck.

Where your nice clothes like you always do, but bring the suit jacket with you and throw it on right before the interview. If you do your hair in an up-do that day than it should last for the interview. All you should have to freshen with your make up is your lipstick. The less last minute prep you have to do the better and more confident you will feel. You want to look professional but also act professional. Make sure you have your portfolio with you and practice before hand some questions with someone that he might ask. You want to be confident but not desperate. He probably already has his mind made up one way or the other and is just looking for confirmation. By treating it as a serious interview you are telling him that you are serious about continuing to do and be the best teacher possible. Good Luck!
I would wear a suit, and I would put my hair up in a bun or twist, something that isn't hard to do, but also isn't easy to come undone while you're working, so you might just have to do a quick straighten. And you can always take off the suit jacket and drape it over the back of your chair or hang it up while you're teaching and put it on when it's time to go.
Wear what you normally wear during the day. The principal knows you and knows your work. What you say and how you say it is what matters to them. Be yourself.
Go to school in a suit!!
I was subbing in my district the same day I had to interview for a teaching position in another building. I went straight from the sub job to the interview. I wore a suit.
I also interviewed within my own building for a Title I after school position. I wore a business skirt on a Friday to that interview as well.
I got both positions. You do NOT want to chance it! Wearing a suit tells your principal that you are serious about this position.
Do the suit!! and good luck!
Wear your trousers and a blouse or nice knit shirt, wear your "school shoes", throw your blazer on the back of your chair, put a pair of pumps under your desk. When you leave for the interview, slide off your shoes, put on the pumps, put on your blazer. Voila! Interview attire.
Good luck, good luck, good luck!

honestly, i don't feel a suit is necessary. i would wear, like you said, slacks, a nice top, and flats. of course try to freshen up right before. i don't think wearing a suit will give you an edge in this case. these people already know you (and probably love you!) so just put on a smile and ace that interview. good luck!
Wear the suit. Keep any jewelry simple, keep your hair simple, and do wear a little makeup. The best interview advice I ever received was to dress for the job you'd like to have in 5 years (i.e. your potential boss' job). It will put you on a level with the person who's interviewing you. As a hiring manager, I can tell you that too few people do this - but the ones who do are showing me that they really want the job and are serious about it. Make sure to spruce up your resume, and have several copies printed up on nice paper and ready to hand to the hiring manager before the interview starts. Also it's a good idea to have references typed up and ready to go, in case the principal should ask for them. Practice your answers to possible interview questions ahead of time (maybe with a trusted colleague).
And of course, like mom always said, be yourself! =) Best of luck, and I hope you nail it!
In your situation I would wear a suit if at all possible. I think that it shows you are really interested and mean business. It also shows you are willing to step it up to show them you are not just taking for granted the great position you are in. Good luck it sounds like you are a perfect fit!
i would go in a "church attire" heals are a given just have your hair up in a nice pony perhaps curled and do simple makeup. make sure you carry a perfume in your purse just to freshen up even on the walk over the the office lol. i would think you already have a head start considering you are already in the school but a second chance to show off you personality and positive points is always a plus. go with confidence and remember to be humble
I agree that a suit is the best thing to wear to an interview. However, your situation is a little different. Since you always wear dress pants, I would just wear a nice pair of dress pants with a nice blouse. Keep your heels in a bag, and you can change shoes quickly. You may want to consider bringing along a blazer that you can put on just before the interview.
Good luck.
Black and white are always the answer. Whether that be a black jacket with white top and black pants. So many shows' I've watched on what to wear they always say black. It makes you look smart, intelligent and an easy going person. So whatever you have in black and white wear it. For some reason it highlights the interview.
Good luck, you won't need it. I feel that the job is yours'.
I work with HR at my job. I will say that people that take the time to look professional make a better impression than those who don't. It shows you are really interested in getting the job and took extra time to look nice. It also shows respect for the people that are interviewing you. I definitely do not think a suit is necessary in your case. Definitely like another mom said--bring a jacket/blazer to throw on before you go in. If not that, then how about a shell/cardi set and a pearl necklace? That would be very appropriate. Good luck! Let us know when you get the job!!! ;)
You should definitely wear a suit. Wear a pants suit so that you're more comfortable throughout the day. Have a nice blouse and only put your jacket on for the interview. If you're wearing nice pants and a blouse, you won't feel too out of place in the classroom and you'll have the benefit of adding the jacket for the professional look you need during interview time.
As for heels, if you are wearing a pants suit, you can get away with a fancy loafer-type shoe. You could also bring heels just for the interview portion so you're not wearing uncomfortable shoes all day in the classroom.
Good luck!!!

I'd say wear the nice pants etc and at the last minute put on a suit jacket. Take a deep breath and know your work already speaks for itself and you helped the school out in a pinch and that will be noted. Most of the principals I work with know fairly well how teachers in their building are doing so you probably have a leg up on the competition..good luck:)
Not a dumb question at all, you are in a tough spot. Do you have a nice jacket that you could have with you to put on over your blouse and slacks? A jacket would dress you up a little. Your interview may be somewhat informal since you know the principle but you need to try to keep it professional, that would show him/her that you are serious about wanting the job.
GOOD LUCK!!!
As a rule, always dress (at least) one step above what is expected at the job. If "Business Casual" is what everyone wears, then dress for the interview in "Business Professional." If it was a "Casual" work environment, then wear "Business Casual." {Casual: nice shirt and maybe jeans; Business Casual: nice (collar) shirt and slacks/skirt; Business Professional: suit (+tie for a man), heels, the works.} NEVER wear a scent anyone can smell unless they are within your personal space. Brush teeth just prior to interviewing. Show up at least ten minutes early if possible (if you are already at work at the time, I realize some of this would be hard if not impossible to do). I know you didn't ask for the rest, but I just got finished taking an Interview Skills class. There is WAY more info out there.
Back to your question. If you normally wear slacks and a nice shirt, then I would wear the suit - to the interview at least. Before the interview, step into the restroom to run a brush through your hair, brush teeth, touch up lip gloss, slip on your "good shoes," take a few deep breaths, and KNOCK 'EM DEAD!!!
