Has any one used Domperidone to increase her milk supply? My supply has decreased dramatically and I was told about this medication. I just want to see if any one has any experience using Domperidone and if they recommend it. thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi! I used domperidone with success. Unfortunately a few years ago I got breast implants and when it came time to breastfeed I wasn't able to produce much milk...an ounce or two MAX. I felt incredibly guilty and so I started doing research. I got a presripion for Reglan because my doc wouldn't prescribe domperidone. I never filled it because after I researched it I found a ton of side effects. I decided to go with dom and I had Lloyd Center Pharmacy compound it for me. Beware...you have to take a lot of pills daily but it is worth it, I think. Also, it is expensive. Domperidone is the number 1 presription at LLoyd Center pharmacy.

It isn't FDA approved, but in my opinion there are numerous political reasons drugs are and aren't approved.

Reglan is scary! I would try Domperidone in addition to Fenugreek.

Good luck!

Hi there. I had very low milk supply with my twins. I tried both Raglan and domperidone. I think they both helped a little, but hard to say for sure. I ended up taking a lot of fenugreek and some other nursing herbs that I got from a great website called www.herblore.com. Pam Caldwell who owns the business is fabulous for breastfeeding and increasing milk supply. She'll even do a phone consultation w/ you for free.

Hi S.,

I work in the lactation field and have seen results with the use of Domperidone. The literature supports an expected increase in a woman who had a full supply that has decreased.I agree the side effects are less than Reglan. The cost is dependent on the pharmacy. I believe the Forest Grove pharmacy and Lloyd Center the only compounding pharmacies in the Portland area currently providing Domperidone. Of course Kellymom.com has many options for alternative pharmacies.

Good Luck,
D.

I had a breast reduction and they recommened it for me. I was producing 1 oz and it doubled me to 2 oz. so I was having to supplement with formula also. They also had me pumping 15 min after feeding my baby to stimulate more production. My baby was extremely fussy and colicky. The whole ordeal exhausted me. I ended up stopping the Dom and pumping and just giving her what I had and then supplementing and she and I were extremely harmonious. With #2, I tried nothing, just breast then formula. And #3, I tried the mothers milk tea, but it's spendy and you have to drink so much of it it gets old. I didn't really see a change in my milk but I did spend a lot of time in the bathroom. The herbalist who sold it to me said the key is just drinking lots of water........I would not recommend the Dom, it wasn't worth the money. My daughter is 5, at the time Beaverton Pharmacy could do admixtures (which I don't think they do anymore) and it cost $120 for 1 months supply that is NOT covered by insurance. Good luck.

I used it *very sucessfully* - I had a breast reduction years ago, and my supply was very low. Domperidone really helped - DO NOT TAKE REGLAN - it passes the blood-brain barrier, and can cause depression - domperidone doesn't.

There is only one pharmacy in the Portland/Metro area that compounds Domperidone - Lloyd Center Pharmacy - they were great - just know it is not covered by insurance...

Good luck! (I used Fenugreek and Mothers Milk tea also at times, but the Domperidone was the most helpful)

Hi, There is a tea you can get at Battleground healing center (downtown) that works great for one of my clients and it is natural. At GNC you can get fenugreek, a suppliment that helped my daughter greatly. And it worked fast. Good luck.

My friend was offered this by her doctor but worried about the side effects on the baby. I know other women have already mentioned it, but thought I'd give another recommendation for fenugreek. That's what she decided to use first and it's been working out great for her. And the smell that someone else mentioned... well it makes her smell like maple syrup!

My lactation consultant used it with her last child and it worked wonderfully well for her. I have huge milk supply problems and didn't try it with my first, but I am due in 2 weeks and going to start on it right away to see if it helps. So far, for most people I have heard that have used it, it has worked, it just may take a few weeks to get your milk supply back up to were you want it. Another drug to try is Reglan, it works quicker and it is easier to get from a doctor. Good Luck. If I see your post again, I will let you know how it worked for me!

Yes, I've used (and am still using) domperidone. Check out the website of Dr. Jack Newman. He is an expert on breastfeeding and has experience with domperidone http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/newman.shtml (see his handout #19 specifically). His medical experience has shown that mother's tea (which has fenugreek), fenugreek and blessed thistle are usually most effective early after birth (in the first 2 months postpartum) whereas domperidone is usually more effective in your case - where a good milk supply was established but has diminished for some reason. I won't use reglan for the reasons others have stated (depression & passing the blood-brain barrier). I purchase the domperidone over the internet (http://www.inhousepharmacy.com/). It usually arrives in 7-10 days. Also, remember the laws of nature concerning breastfeeding: the more your baby nurses, the more your body will produce. So, you may want to consider expressing milk to "empty" your breasts.
Please email me if you would like more information.

I used Fenugreek. It's natural and it worked for me! It didn't taste the greatest to me, I used the liquid form. You can mix it with water or a soda. I think I heard somewhere that you can get it in pill form. Just go to your healthy food section at your super market or Natural foods store. Also, you can get Mother's Milk Tea by Natures Made (I believe that's the brand) you can find it in your natural food section at the super market. Again, doesn't taste the greatest but it's all worth it in the end..... Good luck

I would not advise taking a drug, it would then be in the milk your baby gets. I would worry about what it could do to my baby later.
You can try Mother's milk tea, found at Fred Meyers nutrition center. Keep putting your baby to the breast, it's supply and demand.

Never heard of it, but have heard of several other things that work. Go to your nutritional center or local market where they sell natural foods. Ask them for a tea. There are several out there. Also, I have heard that a little beer helps, just go easy on that, like 4-6 oz. or something. Blessings,

Greetings -

I also had milk supply problems. Nothing seemed to work for me. I took domperidone for almost six weeks and saw no results. The pharmacy claims that it does work for everyone but sometimes it takes up to 8 weeks, sometimes even four months. I 'gave up' so that I didn't have to deal with all of the emotions surrounding my situation and could 'move on'. Anyway, I know how very difficult this situation can be!! Stay strong!!

my doctor let me try Reglan, and i get at least an extra ounce a breast! if i don't take it, i see the decrease in almost 12 hours. i was also told to pump every 2 hours instead of 3 hours and that would help too. (i had my twins 6 weeks premature and have to fortify my milk to 22 calories, the reason i'm still pumping instead of nursing.)

also, there's a product by Motherlove called More Milk Plus, and that seems to help too, and it doesn't leave you smelly like the fenugeek.

hope this helps.

I am not sure of the drug, but there are other more natural ways to increase milk production. There is Earth Mama Angel Baby Milkmaid Tea, which my midwife and other moms have sworn by. Also there is Fenugreek, which is the top ingredient in the tea and works awesome for milk production.
Just be sure to talk with either your pediatrician or doctor before trying anything.

My lactation ARNP prescribed Reglan to me because my milk supply was low when my baby was 3 weeks old. I took it for a while and got extremely tired (I'd fall asleep in the chair at 6:45 every night). I am usually an "on the go" person who never naps!!! When I went back for a follow up she told me about the domperidone. I started taking that and took it until my baby was 11 months old. I had an increase in milk production without the fatigue--it was like a miracle as far as not being tired. I am still nursing morning and before bedtime-(my baby's now 21 months old)-only becuase the baby still wants to. I would recommend the Domperidone to anyone. It allowed me to be able to successfully nurse. Please feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

I would recommend Fenigreek instead. It is a natural supplement and won't harm the baby. I took it with my daughter.

Yes..i have been take Domperidone for 16mo. I adopted my son at birth and i have been breastfeeding ever since. I highly recomend it. I have had no side effects and i have taken up to 12 pills a day and now i am down to 4 and i probably dont need to keep taking it but i am scared to stop cuz i dont want to risk anything. I was alot of pumping and hardwork in the beginning and now i want to keep it. I also recomend looking into fenugreek and adding some pupping sessions into your schedule. the more you pump the more the body thinks its need to make. I pumped after every feeding for a while. Best of luck! MJ
