Driving lessons...what Would You Charge?

An acquaintance of mine (met her a few months ago) recently asked me to give her driving lessons. Although I love to drive and have my CDL, I'm not sure if I'll go through with it. But, in the event that I do, if you were me, what would be your rate per 45 minute "lessons"?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Nevermind LOL I'm not going to go through with it after all. Doris Day, you confirmed something I was already thinking. Thank you.

Julie, I hear you. It wasn't about the coins but I tell you, sometimes someone actually paying for services will make the difference in their level of participation, appreciation, timeliness etc.

Thanks B & TF. I'm in agreement as well.

Thank you Margie and WW.

I don't think I would charge, just either do it or don't depending on my time available. When you take money you assume liability for what you teach. Like you teach her something wrong, so fails or worse, you can get sued. To me that isn't worth a few bucks.

You couldn't pay me enough to get me to teach anyone to drive. I can't even stand teaching my own kids. I remember my own driver's ed teacher slamming on the brake in her driver's ed car to prevent me from getting into a wreck when I was learning. You don't happen to have a brake on the passenger side of the car, do ya?

My facetious question just means that you could get yourself hurt or worse teaching someone from scratch. It would be better for her to take lessons first from the people with these specialized cars. Then let her practice further on you...

I'm with Doris and Julie on this one.

You could not pay me enough!!! When my 21 yr old daughter started driving, she went to a private driving school and we also hired one on one driver training at $30/hr.

That said, I would also never accept the responsibility and potential liability of doing something like this. It's not worth the risk to me.

Good luck.

so glad you decided against this! i was going to say i woudn't charge a thing and i wouldn't give the lessons either. there are classes that you can pay for at our local college for cdl licensing and advertisements for professional driving instructors at the local dmv. these people are trianed in how to teach someone to drive. help her find one of these courses that fits her schedule and let them teach her!

I am guessing she is an adult and therefore think she must go through a professional service. If I remember correctly, I became frustrated and a little tense while teaching my daughter to drive. That may not go over so well with your acquaintance.

I can see by your SWH that you've decided against it. I think that's really smart for the liability (not to mention safety) reasons. I think you're wise.

Just wanted to add - it can make friendships (or even acquaintanceship) really strained and awkward.

I would think you would need a drivers instruction license - and that varies from state to sate.

Our son is going for his Behind The Wheel class in July and it's $250 for 1 week of instruction (that's an hour per day).

No, I wouldn't do this for an acquaintance (or anyone).
I'd point her to the yellow pages (or Google) and have her find a driving school that she can sign up with.

Our 12 year old has been driving for over a year. I taught her on a standard transmission, an old beater. She drives around the farm and never, ever, on the street.

I took her out in the middle of a field and told her to close her eyes. To "feel" the clutch. She is really good at feathering it and doesn't hop anymore. That old beater is gone now though. She's driving the truck and the car and the van. I don't think she's gone over 10 mph either.

Our insurance said uninsured insurance will cover any accident she has. Since it's Oklahoma and on a farm it's okay. Still, I wouldn't teach a friends kid. I'd expect them to teach their own family.

If a friend of mine wanted to come to my house, in their own vehicle, and they had insurance then I'd probably do it. But not in my own vehicle.

I would never charge a friend, just like I won't charge my own child. Have her get a learners permit for insurance reasons and then take her someplace without any other cars and teach her the basics.

Or if you don't feel comfortable with it just tell her that and maybe suggest that you could help her find a school.
